so right, vaping, in addition to being a great alternative to smoking also seems to have some kind of collector/hobbyist element that inclines one to spend, spend, spend...
I really do feel like its becoming a hobby more than an addiction . I see all these different batteries , Cartomizers , drip tips and flavors I want .. I can only justify spending the money on random accessories because the $6 a day I use to spend on analogs .

Forget about saving money. Just focus on saving your lungs.

Three things about vaping: battery life, attachment (cartos, carts, tank, etc.), and juice. All require replenishing. Which means spend, spend, spend. There are, of course, solutions to save a few bucks like buying a passthrough, diy'ing your own juice and recycling cartos. Or resist the temptation of vaping excessively. Even better is give up vaping.

It is all opinions I know. My opinion, if you are willing to spend $5 -8 dollars a pack of analogs only to shorten your life span. Then why would even question the price of a tool and all the accessories to help you kick the habit. Myself and my wife both quit and we both really enjoy sitting around vaping and sharing our success stories. Any way you look at it your going to save a ton of cash and your life, not to mention a few doctor bills.

After my initial outlay on an eGo-W, some juice, and some spare clearos, I didn't spend any more money until I hit 'break even'.
Our current TIGHT budget mandates that I can spend about $40 every 10 days and not exceed my previous smoking cost.
SWMBO really wants me to find the juices I like & stop experimenting. I do have a big stash of juices & clearos to hold me a while if I HAD to stop spending.

Right now, it's 18 days before I can spend on vaping again.

As with most reponses here, startup was expensive, but upkeep won't be. Since not smoking outside and not smoking nasty (to me) cigarettes, I've saved by not buying magazines, soda, and cigarettes. I HAD to have magazines and my Kindle for entertainment while smoking outside by myself and HAD to drink soda with the cigarettes to make them tolerable. Now, I drink water and much cheaper diet, flavored tea. My magazines were 3-4 dollars apiece and I would buy 3-4 a week! That's not counting the 3 I have subscriptions to which I won't be renewing. Somehow, I have an oodle of juice now, plenty of cartos and clearos, and 2 tanks.

If my math is right, if I can keep my first four weeks under $400, I'm $100 ahead. So far, I think I'm on track to do that, in fact, if the set up that's arriving this week can do what I need it to do for the month of April, I'm going to wind up saving close to $250. (analogs are REALLY expensive where I live; about 8.60 a pack or more, and I'm at least a 1.5 PAD smoker).

In order to make this program work, I'm going to have to save money, a lot of money.

I know I'm going to need a few more batteries, I know I'll probaby need to purchase a USB pass through for the evenings. Which should work great for me, because from the time I come home from work, my laptop is on my knee unless I'm doing stuff like cooking or cleaning. And I've never been a smoker when doing those activities. So the passthrough should be a good tool as I sit, work on my computer and do my true hobby/obssession, beadweaving and embroidery. Which is the main reason I cannot make vaping a hobby, it has to be a tool for me... my hobby already nickels and dimes me to death. LOL.

I'm really not concerned with keeping track of breaking even. I am just so happy to have finally found something I truly believe will keep me off analogs. After 25 years as a p.a.d. or more marb red smoker, it only took 3 days of vaping while smoking to drop analogs for good. I never even tried to quit smoking once in my life because I truly love the act of exhaling smoke. I knew gum, patches, etc. would never work. I did have to stop smoking for a couple months in 2004 because of punctured lungs from a moto-x accident. They tasted awful when I started again but the habit prevailed.
Anywho..... Analogs would've cost me around $4000 a year being in CT. In 3 weeks since I started vaping, I've spent around $600 or so. I have 6 Volt batts with plenty of empty 808 cartos, an Ego-C 2x-1000 mAh kit, a Bolt, a 3VO, tons of boge and smoktech cartos, 2 dct tanks, and plenty of juice(12-18mg) to last me for months. I will probably get a Provari in a few months, but for now I feel I'm comfortable enough with every angle covered to win the war against analogs:toast:

I was way in the black with vaping vs. smoking costs until last weekend, when I started a major spending spree - 1 new ego-T kit, 2 new (to me by way of the classies) mods, 1000+ml of juice (yes a thousand. Don't judge :p), cartos & tankos & tanks & drip tips and this & that & ooooh look! SHINY! 10+ orders in under a week, and now I'm cutting myself off for a while, because I'm rapidly approaching the point where I'm NOT breaking even.

BUT - I'm not smoking, and really that is the most important thing, because in the long run the health costs would have far exceeded my recent spending spree - monetarily and more importantly, physically, so I'm good with it :)

For from being in the black and even further from caring.

Yep I know to the cent how much I have spent, so do you by looking at my signature. To stay off cigarettes I would spend more if I thought it needed.

But I don't. Have some great devices so will be in cartos, atty and juice mode for a while and that is less than $50 a month with some room to play.

What I am looking forward to doing is just vaping. Not playing, learning, experimenting just week in and out vaping. The VMod and ProVari's should lend themselves to this so bring it on!

I noticed people here have huge collections and tried many different types of PVs. Seems kind of hard to think people are actually saving buying these compared to cigs.

I have a feeling this will become an addictive hobby that I'll spend more money on than cigs :p

Welcome to ECF.

Here's an e-mail I recently sent to a family member:

"Agree with you 100%.
I'm very disapointed in how this has
grown from a life-saving device into an
overblown hobbyist "community".
Weekly, I'm spammed with the "hottest"
new wares. Furthermore, the once legitimate
sources of information (forums) have now become littered
with a "collector" or "gearhead" mentality.
Very unfortunate timing considering many governments
outside of North America are now promoting these
devices as proper NRT's.

I wasted enough time trying to help others quit smoking.
Not interested in being lampooned on the internet by a hundred or so "enthuisiests" because they can't comprehend why someone wouldn't want to carry around
a fanny pack full of syringes and so on.

Your .... comparison is, coincidentally, very accurate.
The goal of quitting smoking has been forgotten in the
electronic cigarette microcosm. It's now akin to land of head-shops and pothead fanatics."
