I made an attempt at a dual coil build on a mech mod. The atty was a cheap clone. In the process the positive post insulator on the atty melted, creating a short.

I discovered this malfunction IMMEDIATELY--as holding the mod was like holding a curling iron by the barrel. I quickly unscrewed the mod and flung the battery onto the floor. Battery did not vent, but i disposed of it. So you will know immediately if there is an issue with a short.

@HauntedMyst --i am a Buckeye, and when i read your post, i pronounced Louvre as
'Loo-ver' in my head. Prooves that we're CHICK here in 'flyover country'

Something got way too hot if a delrin insulator melted.

While I agree that this is probably the most conservative choice, and certainly the best advice for beginners, I do think that for the experienced venter it comes down in the end to individual risk tolerance, number of Youtube followers, and perhaps most importantly, whether the venter in question was born before or after 1988. Proximity of drapes is also a factor I'd likely take into consideration. You should certainly only do what you're comfortable with, but I'd just like to point out that many venters have been filming first/smothering later with great success, for years.

There was one guy whose house burnt down, but it's worth noting that he _had a house_. This is by far the biggest risk factor for having your house burn down, and it's not at all clear to me that his house wouldn't have eventually burnt down anyway. As always, YMMV.

(EDIT: and, though it kills me to do it, this being the Internet I should probably point out that I'm joking.)

Having a house! It's about time someone brought that up! A lot of problems can be solved by avoiding having a house, or an apartment.

The mod was fine, and still usable. The pos post insulator on the atty melted thru when i was pulsing out the build.

Before i began putting power to the atty, i metered it and i recall the resistance being ~0.5 or 0.6Ω. The dual mesh wicks, i believe got too hot and heated up the atty too much, melting down the insulator on the deck of the atty. Sucks--because the glowing coils were coming along quite nicely.

Battery did not vent but i got rid of it. Never tried that ambitious of a build again. For a goof I did set up an Aga TD with two big fat mesh wicks and 28g kan. Around 6 months ago, and that atty still gets vaped.

The incident with the Dome clone happened very fast. I never did use it again.

Yeah, I've been playing with just having a tent, recently. I'm not only less afraid of battery incidents, but custards in particular seem to steep a bit better out here in the woods. The extension cord/wifi issues are real though.

I've settled into a hobbit hole myself. A budget one. A major upside is that I'm making a saving on electrical bills. The downside is that I don't have any electricity. Makes charging 18650s a tad bit difficult, but I'm thinking about arranging something with electric eels, or positive thinking...

Weird.
I've never had that happen pulsing a build.
I vape around .28.
I have about 25lbs of clone RDAs.

I have had that happen when a mod got stuck firing.

OK then. I must admit that this is the first time I've seen someone measure RDAs in pounds, but... seems legit.

Lol.
Im not the only one around here with drawers full of gear
I lost count of the attys years ago.
You should see the stack of mod boxes in my garage.

You laugh now.
Just wait until the shinyitis gets you.

I'm thinking the mesh wicks were the culprit....I wonder where the ends of them were....:danger:

I blame the real estate on the deck of the Dome. In retrospect--way too crowded with the size of the deck screws. Coupled with the cheap insulators, it was a mishap waiting to happen. A single wick and coil would have been no problem. I've built dual-coils on the Kraken, Bliss, Aga TD--and all was well. Singles are just easier. If i get the build bug again--i will try duals on the Cobra.

My point--in responding to the OP was that when something goes awry with a setup--there is immediate heat-up. I liken it to plugging in a curling iron. No mistaking it. There was no way that i would continue to build--let alone vape what i was doing. It was an anomaly what happened--and i still build and vape with no hesitation. I don't blame clones in general or the rebuildables hobby. My wallet and i have wholeheartedly embraced both. The mech mod was fine, and still is. No visual defects to the battery--i discarded the battery.

Pay attention to what your five senses are telling you. That is just basic safety, with anything.

~1 mm from the pos post fasteners and ~1 mm off the floor of the tank.

Side note--i've been running my Cobras with wicks that touch the floor of the tank.

Side note #2--i love my Klein Tools multimetre. Features include audible alarms and a nifty black zippy-up case
