I will honestly admit my heart is hanging somewhere around my knees.Am I scared...
you bet your bottom dollar. I'm not a fool and that storm is striking fear in to many hearts.
One thing I'm not is hysterical, I have no time to be so.I spend all night clearing out the one room in the house with no windows getting it ready with mattresses so we can hunker down for the worst, that will mean 6 people and 4 dogs in a small 15x6 space.
On top of that dealing with other family members that are being impacted by this storm.
NONE of us has time to be hysterical, we have to put up a brave front as children and animals depend on us.
So and now before the kids get up I'm going to find a corner and cry, then I'll dry my tears and soldier on.

Oh my gosh! This post broke my heart. {{{{{hugs}}}}

If you can try to make a game of it for the kids. Like it's an adventure. Take board games with you into the room. Pretend your building a fort. Anything to keep the mind off of the storm. Hell, fill the room with mattresses. Along the walls so you can quickly pull them on top if needed (please God, don't let them be needed :nun: ).

At least the news people aren't trying to out-sensationalize each other on this.

It was 1:30 last night before I could unwind enough to even think bout trying to sleep.
Wouldn't you know it...a few minutes till 6 this morning my phone starts blasting off a hurricane warning from the NWS.

Latest has this coming in at Tampa.
I am not a panic person, but my anxiety level is really up there.
I think it's probably adrenaline that has kicked in.

It kept moving west until the current track has it heading for you almost exactly as originally was for us. Hope y'all over there stay safe. We're still going to get hurricane force winds but nothing like Tampa. My prayers are with y'all.

I have just bin banned from further prep work.

I also think that since it will be dark by the time it gets up here is grating on me.

That is what is grating on me also, things always seem worse when faced in the dark.

Be sure you don't go into the attic without a hatchet to get thru onto the roof if the water gets that high. We had a few people do that dispite warnigs & got trapped. In fact, don't go into the attic at all. Go straight to the roof & take a something white with you to wave so you can be seen. Helicopters or boats will rescue you. Just stay on the roof & you'll be found.

Wish it was just a storm. But considering some Floridians may end up losing everything they have and others may be forced to find alternative places to live because their homes are badly damaged, I think they have every right to hysteria. And all that with limted funds in many cases.

Hysteria is a disconnection from reality predicated on misperception. In our society all too often the result of being misled as to the truth. No one has a right to it; but, perhaps a right to be protected from it.

However, I feel for all my fellow Floridians right now. And I'd certainly agree Bea that the weakest, most vulnerable and poor are the most hurt by natural disaster. Guess my argument is against those who would make it worse by misleading us. In my view, there are plenty of those kinds of turds…pardon me, opportunists, as we've suffered in vaping. Altogether too many who love misery and would love us all to be miserable with for them. Regrettably I see 'em all too clearly to be comfortable in a storm. I'd rather see folks confidently survive and have tried to do my part here past few.

Good luck Bea and all a ya's. :)

p.s. Here's the Doppler this a.m. Ya'll know what red means…

I just don't see how they can say WHEN this thing will turn and how much.
This is a monster with a lot of power, a lot of momentum - I really don't think it can be judged from 'past performances'.
It has to do with the highs & lows, & temps of air pressure. A high needs to come south far enough to push it south & east into the Atlantic. The cooler air over the Atlantic will kill it. You don't want it to go west into the Gulf. Warm water & warm air will feed it & it will keep going & sucking up more water.

I think they've been anticipating the breakdown of the low that's been straddling Central FL the past few days. Although dissipating as it slides North it's effect can be seen apparently flattening the outermost Northern edge of the storm's ring flow as of midday. The better news is that Irma's grazing of Cuba's barrier islands (and SE quadrant transit of Oriente highlands) seems to have kicked it in the belly apparently collapsing it's center with 29C temps before it…

Good luck all. :)

Y'all calm down, & stop the negativity. Stop focusing on fear, & stop giving it voice. That just creates more fear & spreads it to others. Focus on keeping your wits & thoughts in order. It's a storm. Lots of wind (maybe), lots of water (probably). If you have prepared correctly, you'll have, at a minimum, flashlights, food, & water. There is nothing else to do but wait till it's over. Now is the time for logic & practicality to rule. Not fear & hysteria.
I'm sorry, but there is a lot of fear spreading going on here & that is not good, nor will it help anyone. I live 15 miles miles from the Gulf. Just south of Houstonn between Houston & the Gulf. I've been through every hurricane in this area since March of 1978 without loss. I only evacuated during Ike because I had all of my employers customer credit records in my Suburban. So that the company could continue business when the storm was over. There was a lot of damage. But the majority of deaths & injuries were not a direct result of the storm. They were because people paniced & did not use their heads. Being afraid is one thing. Letting it take over will get you killed.
So stop the fear talk h encourage each other. Reach out to friends & neighbors to see if they need anything stay in touch. Stay here. Be calm.

This is a really cool site:
Windy as forecasted

More realistic to me and hope true. Think a landfall in the glades would be treacherous for the environment and all S Fl (thinking back to moderate Irene 1999 and the extent of damage, > 1Bio and grossly underestimated.

Can see how a weakening low might permit a Northward momentum to develop. Just don't get what forces a stop sign and a hard right turn into FL from the current track. Hurricanes don't have legs. The earth turns beneath them. Don't see the steering currents driving it to us. Have been waiting for a compelling explanation for this significant change in trajectory.

Good luck all. :)

p.s. Awesome interface Ros.
