I work in a small office, and our CFO has seen me vape numerous occasions, and seemed to be receptive positive about it... until now.. I've been doing it openly in the office for over 30 days.... but suddenly today, I had just topped off my 901, and produced a decent amount of vapor, as he was on his way out, and happened to see me just as i exhaled, and looked very concerned and said :

"I don't know about that, that can't be good..."

I replied, "it's basically water vapor, and dissipates almost instantly"

he said "Yea, I'm sure smoke does too" and he ran out the door before i could engage him...

so while he's out I am preemptively going to send him some information to convince him "it's cool" to vape in the office... since he obviously didn't have a problem with it for the last 30 days, I'm not sure why it suddenly concerned him... but here is what i need from you guys/gals:

GOOD INFORMATION TO CONVINCE HIM IT's SAFE FOR HIM AND THE FOLKS AROUND ME!

Here is what i have so far:
---------------------------
First and foremost, I am not using this device in front of potential/existing customers and or visitors into the office, due the potential "appearance of smoking." My direct coworkers, have no complaints to me using the device sitting a few feet away from them, for he last 33 days. Here is some additional information:

Information from the discovery channel:

Daily Planet

More random facts:

Electronic Cigarettes are non-flammable, contains no tobacco and emits no second hand smoke, its use is not prohibited where laws prohibit smoking products that produce second hand smoke. These devices are legal and permitted for use, without issue or complaint in restaurants, workplaces, airports, bars, clubs, libraries, offices, and many other locations where tobacco smoking is discouraged or prohibited.

1. The Electronic Cigarette contains no tars or other carcinogenic substances.
2. No flame is required thus eliminating release of over 4000 chemical substances produced by traditional cigarettes (such as carbon monoxide, ammonia, and hydrogen cyanide).
3. The Electronic Cigarette is harmless to the environment and to people around you, with no danger of second-hand tobacco smoke.
4. No flame means no fire. The Electronic Cigarette can be used safely in all “No Smoking” areas.

Before you go all gung ho - you need to engage him in a conversation as to why his mind has changed....

Then soothe his fears with your facts and figures, based on what changed his mind.... if you flood him with information overload, there's a chance he'll see your approach as defensive (or aggressive), and close his mind to further review.

Point, taken, best i can figure he was just in a bad mood, as he had brought lunch in, and was sideswiped by the sales folks to go to lunch with a client.. I guess i just need more facts and figures for the discussion.

I think Babachoo hit the nail on the head . . . he was taken aback to see a huge plume of smoke (or what seemed to him to be smoke).

I vape in the house, but when my hubby (non-smoker) is around, I vape carefully so as to avoid lots of vapor on the exhale. It's not so hard to do--just hold it in a bit longer and then take longer on the exhale. Well, one evening I wasn't thinking, and I let out a HUGE amount of vapor. My husband was a bit put off by it. He said he *knows* it's not smoke, but it nonetheless doesn't make him feel good to be sitting near me when I am practically belching vapor. (Yeah, doesn't sound very nice, does it?)

Anyway, I'd take Vick's advice and talk to him without presenting a whole lot of technical stuff to find out what is the problem . . . and then you can offer the appropriate reassurances.

What i really don't get, and makes me think he was just in a bad mood, i because on atleast 4 separate occasions, he's seen me exhale, the first time he said cheerfully: "wait, whoa! do that again!" and then i told him about it, etc, the next few times, he'd say things like, "that is cool!" and chuckle etc. so I may just wait it out to see if he presses the issue, maybe not do it infront of him anymore... but i have my email saved as a draft, just incase! :)

That was a great video from Discovery Channel! I hadn't seen it before.

My only advice is: he's the CFO so he's probably pretty busy. If you want to provide lots of info be aware he might not read it all. Make sure you give him an "executive summary" with a short bulleted list of the most important facts first. You can expand on it later if you still want.

Guess I'm lucky, my boss (Vice Pres & Board Member) is encouraging and supportive. Plus, we're engineers and scientists, stuff like this intrigues us.

Possibly the CEO or a board member may have complained to him; or, you're right and he was just in a crappy mood. It may blow over. You might want to gently ask if he's had a change of mind. If so, ask why? If he's not responsive to the conversation, don't push it. Try again at some other time.

And...

Agree with a "bulleted" list or conversation:

  • Healthier - no cancer!
  • Less probable sick days
  • Get over colds quicker
  • Efficiency - I seldom take breaks any longer
  • NO Tobacco - Just "water" vapor; it's a fog machine
  • Thereby - no second hand smoke
  • No trash - butts, ashes
  • No ashtray fires!
  • Virtually no smell

There is also the possibility that insuring you could be less - you're a non smoker now.

Keep it short and to the point - show efficiency in delivering a message.

Good luck-

Does anyone in upper mang. know what it is you are actually doing? If so, he might ask around and get the answers himself. It does not seem like he told you to put that away and do not do it again. As you said he is busy and might be under a lot of stress. I say email him or do nothing. Have something prepared if he does come around again.

Post his or her email address on here and we will all can send helpful notes with useful information, and or articles to him until they let you vape! :p

I must beg to differ on posting his email address. Although we here are all really enthusiastic about e-cigarettes, I would make the assumption that the last thing a CFO wants is to be spammed about information he/she doesn't necessarily care about. I would use the elevator pitch strategy. You need to break down your information to be disseminated in the time it takes to ride an elevator (1 minute or less).

I am positive he was joking...at least I hope to gawd he's joking! Although what would be even funnier than that as a joke, is if it wasn't a joke.
