It was 2011. I edited my original post ▲↑▲↑▲ armed with the name of the device. Well, at least there was a Q in the name, heh.

I'd love to hear stories from the veterans about how they found out about vaping way back when vaping was brand new and practically unheard of. How did you all even find out about it? And what were the juices like back then? Has there been an evolution in juice as well?

I don't know if I qualify as a veteran, but I have a fairly cool little anecdote. I started using tobacco when I was ten years old, so it was as much a part of me as my arms and legs. I got tired of paying so much after the lawsuit against the tobacco companies, and found out about online cig vendors. You could get the same product for much less money, but had to take the chance of having your purchase impounded.

One of mine was impounded, and during the search for a replacement vendor, I found out about using vapor to get your nic fix. All that was on whatever website I found were a hookah and a pipe, and the hookah was huge. Plus, I wasn't sure about all this stuff, so I passed on it at the time.

A couple years later, I saw my first Blu at a local Sheetz convenience store. I bought one and instantly hated it. I found more advanced equipment at a different store and bought what I think was a Kanger pen clone and a bottle of banana nut bread liquid. It was so much better the difference was like night and day. The store is still there, and they still sell the liquid. I go and buy a bottle of banana nut bread liquid now and then, even though I realize it's junk, just for the memories.

Wow, vape nostalgia must be a thing! :)

That's it for sure. I remember that being HIGHLY anticipated, VERY advanced for back then, and advertised (it's coming, it's coming, it's coming) for a long, long time. Wow....memory lane..... I had completely forgotten about that one.

Yeah the hype was TREMENDOUS! I remember thinking how advanced it was and wishing I had the spare dough to preorder. Consolation arrived in rebuildables and the reality that, even as advanced as this mod was 'supposed' to be, it still relied on factory atomizers. Thanks goodness for the Bulli A2.

In the past couple weeks I've gone through some of the "stuff" I bought over the years and found to be pretty useless, from the early days. It sounds weird, but I don't even remember buying some of that junk, what its name is, or even how to use some of it.

But, I found a couple relics I can't part with, I guess for sentimental reasons. One is a Carlos Juicebox with a personalized graphic of a photo I took on an Oregon vacation in 2006. The other, is the Knight Sticks cigalike, in its original packaging, which was the first crappy eCig I bought in 2010, which led to my instant, accidental, quitting of a 35 year cigarette smoking career.

Then there was that box mod, damn I can't remember the name right now, it was really advanced for its time ... and pricey for its time at about $200, which I don't have because it was recalled. Had a fatal flaw which allowed eLiquid to leak into its electronics. They gave a full refund, which I took. I considered keeping it in spite of the fact that it was destined to become a brick, but got my refund.

EDIT: The box mod I mentioned above was an Eclipse EQ from digitalciggz.
I found the original 'owner's manual' today. And it didn't cost the $200 I mentioned above, it was $300! Yikes!
Do a search here on ECF for 'digitalciggz eclipse eq' for some relevant threads.

It was an interesting programmable device, in the days before tanks. It used an internal 6ml bottle and the eLiquid was pumped up to the atomizer via a micro piezo electronic pump. It featured variable voltage, used a single 18650 cell, had an innovative pressure pad control interface and capacitance buttons rather than conventional switches. And lots of other nifty features either not common or unprecedented in 2011.

Oddly, it wasn't all of the electronic gadgetry which was the device's demise, but a low tech eLiquid leaking into the control electronics problem.

A few videos:

The ECLIPSE EQ!! OMG, I remember that one. Seemed EVERYONE was lusting over possibly getting one..... then the wait began.

I HAD to bring your edit forward. Thank you so much for writing about that one, NCC! Mem'ries.

The ECLIPSE EQ!!

I owned 2 out of 3 of the devices in that photo, although I had my grubby hands on the Eclipse Eq for only a few days, and I think that's a ProVari v2. I studied the Darwin real hard, but in the end I passed.

I still use my ProVari v2.5 up to this moment {he said, then took a vape}, and just ordered another one for backup yesterday. In my book, it's the ProVari for the win. I wonder how many Darwins are still in use today. Probably none, if I recall correctly it had a proprietary battery. That would've been a huge negative factor in my view. I was also concerned about the durability of that swing arm.

As did/do I (2 out of 3 - never owned the Eclipse). I'm pretty sure that's a Provari V1 (maybe).

I opted for the Darwin from the get go. Something about the tech of it all, the advanced state of vape at the time, and just the abstolute uniqueness of it captured me.

And I have no idea how many are still in use today..... but MINE is, shockingly enuf. Do I use it a lot? Of course not, but it's never one I'd wish to sell. (And the swing arm still swings beautifully.)

I have two out of three in my rotation.;). My ProVi V1 was at least 4 years old when I finally upgraded it to V2. My "tire gauge mod" (the Darwin), had a spa treatment a few months before that service stopped and gets used about once a month, just because I can.....and for the very fond memories. :) VW rocks.

I fondly remember the Eclipse Q, but was not on that bandwagon except at a lurker. :) I fondly also remember Basil Ray's awe when he had one of the first and did a video.

Love my darwins and they will NEVER leave me. They certainly aren't in the daily rotation but they get pulled out now-and-again, just for fun, and are still performing like new to this very day. Multiple DNA 75s, 200s and 250s ARE in my daily rotation and Evolv has never failed me in customer service. To that end Brandon rebuilt one of these darwins DURING vapercon 2011 to add the newest rev board and latest 510 and also introduced me to buzz-inducing WTA juice at that same con. Back in the day as the kids don't say anymore lol.

Seems I was wrong. Happy to know y'all's Darwins have made it through the years.
I'm curious though, have you had to replace the battery? And at what price & are they (the batteries) still available?
I was really tempted. I spent quite a bit of time reading various owner's reviews. The hype was every bit as intense as that of the Eclipse IQ, they had a real rivalry going with devotees on both sides. In the end, the Darwin came to fruition and the EQ died on the vine.

I remember when.................. you were JC Newbie.
;)

I remember starting with cigalikes (Eversmoke) in 2009.
I remember upgrading to the ego-twist and a clearomizer, which blew my mind after Eversmoke.
I remember then upgrading to a Kayfun after the hype. The love and hate relationship I had with the finicky kayfun clone will always be cherished.
How times have changed in the last 8 years...

...and I remember you from WHEN I was JC Newbie!

We've been here a long, long time, huh, DC. You even longer than I.

I changed my name from "Newbie" to "Okie" when I moved to the REO sub forum because one of the guys made fun of me for being "Newbie" when I was becoming an ECF Veteran. Ha.

Still original batteries on both mine. They are just generic lipos though - so I am sure I could find something that fits should the need arise.
