Quick question, I was getting a little worked about vaping as much as I do from a fiberglass wick so I was wondering what if we found something similar to a zippo style wick? Surely that's got to be made out of something that has no il health affects.

Also if anyone knows of any articles that can convince me I'm at no risk using the current fiberglass wick I would really appreciate that, I will sleep much better tonight lol.

It is made from 100 percent cotton, braided with brass wire around it. There are wicks for Aladdin Oil Lamps, for Gas Lamps, for Candle making, for Tiki Torches, for Coleman Lanterns and wicks that water your plants for you.

some site told me that. my old zippos wicks have lasted a long damn time

Kevlar is quite strong but not very heat resistant. Would not be a good choice for a wick

Sounds like a Kevlar coated wick might not be a bad idea, it has fiberglass at it's core and it looks like you know it's bad once the wick starts to turn white (showing the fiberglass).

Hopefully we can get some input from guys like Zor, Rick and Dspin.

Cotton is an organic material with a very low burning point. Here is some useful info for cotton so you can decide:

Critical temperatures

Favorable travel temperature range: below 25°C (77°F)
Optimum travel temperature: 21°C (70°F)
Glow temperature: 205°C (401°F)
Fire point: 210°C (410°F)
Autoignition temperature: 407°C (765°F)
Autoignition temperature (for oily cotton): 120°C (248°F)
Cotton dries out, becomes hard and brittle and loses all elasticity at temperatures above 25°C (77°F). Extended exposure to light causes similar problems.

A temperature range of 25°C (77°F) to 35°C (95°F) is the optimal range for mold development.

Looks like zippo wick is cotton with a wire through it. I wonder if it would just burn up.

From the specs that Zor provided, I would guess the zippo wick would probably wick pretty well, probably burn and taste nasty though. Zippo wicks last forever, but they are always charred and burnt

I don't know if it is raw cotton, who knows what they may (if anything) put on them during manufacturing. I personally probably wouldn't risk it.

Fiberglass, I can't speak to it's safety. It's a silica glass, and small particulates of it are bad to breathe. Small particulates of anything are bad for you. Whether we do breathe any of the wicking material I would say is very debatable. Being that the wick is soaked in very viscous liquids, I have my doubts that we do.

My issue with fiberglass, and this is purely personal, is taste. I was a professional chef for 13 years (and a damn good one) and with my palate, I can detect the taste of the wick burning. My palate is exceptionally sensitive though, and can detect the slightest scorching or hint of burning. (I was a saucier) Which means that it is burning (if only slightly.)

There is no chance of the ceramic burning at the temps and voltages that we are using. It also seems to readily absorb our juices, where fiberglass seems to resist soaking it up. To me it's the best option I have found so far.

Thanks lorderos,
I assume you have changed the coil at some time since you started using the SS wick. Did you change the coil only or wick and coil? how long does the wick hold up, can it be reused? To clarify, its my understanding the wick would last for a very, very long time, is that correct?
I still say SS mesh is the best and certainly the healthiest if you take the time to learn it and work through the things that can cause issues :)

I can vouch for the SS being the tastiest vape I've had, pure flavour, not a hint of bad taste. Its quite amazing really how just a little bit of bad flavour detracts from the good flavour; even though I couldn't really detect it, it must of always been there, as with the SS wick, the taste is quite a bit more full on. My Fruit Stripe Illusion, for example, is a whole lot fruitier and juicier. :)

I been using the nextel wick with great results, but the fact that I have to mod the cup and upper plastic to fit better kinda scares me. The fact I can make an immortal ssmesh wick to fit just right sounds nice. The mesh wouldn't conduct heat to the plastics though?

Why so?......
