The spring is sensitive to heat. Once it gets hot from a battery, the spring collapses, which causes the battery to fall away from the mechanical switch, thus ending the flow of power. This stops the battery from getting to that venting point or over discharging.
Once the spring has collapsed, you will find that you can stretch it back out and continue use. However, once its been collapsed, that feature is lost....so it needs to be replaced right away. If another short occurs, it will not collapse and then you will have a venting battery...damage to the button/switch and the mod.
