That it is cynical does not negate the truth of the matter nor is the statement a disparaging comment. Hospitals are worthy endeavors but if they fail to make money, they die. ECF is a worthy endeavor but if it fails to make money then it will die. There is and always will be some tension between an organization's 'mission' and its 'margin'. This is why I am and have been a 'supporting member' for many years. I will have no joy in my heart if ECF should fail.
ECF has to pay its bills, nobody would expect Oliver to support it out of his own pocket. Presumably ECF generates enough revenue to pay its bills or it wouldn't be here, but I would be surprised if it makes much more than that. I'm a supporting member for the same reason as you.
Not every endeavor has to make money. Like those guys in the red trucks who put out fires. Society recognizes the need and finances them. The idea that hospitals ought to operate as profit making entities is something I could spend a bunch of time disagreeing with, but I'll leave it there.
