is vaping really an "epidemic" among teens?

I think the magical part of that pic is he is standing before a belt rack possibly about to purchase one, or at the very least discover what they are???:lol:

Thank God I did not allow the child to wear his pants like that and he somehow magically became a skinny jeans kid by 18 because he was forced to own it.:D That is a trend I am not at all fond of either if I wanted to see what you LOOKED like mid process in preparing for some sort of sexual activity I would politely ASK you.

And even then it would not be at Walmart.

I just posted this in another thread, but the topic is appropriate for this one, too. Grimm Green reported that the FDA just granted $20 million dollars to Stanton Glance, a widely known anti-vape advocate, to study e-cigarettes. We don't have to guess how this study will turn out.

Finally the FDA funds an independent and unbiased study to give vaping the honest chance it deserves

“Epidemic?” A Perspective of Youth Vaping & Tobacco Use Trends

On Wednesday, September 12, 2018, FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb announced enforcement actions to be taken in the wake of unpublished “preliminary data” showing an “epidemic rise” in vaping among young people. Although the new data are not publicly available, Dr. Gottlieb is referencing it as justification for drastic enforcement actions like banning flavors and pulling entire product lines off of retailers’ shelves. In order to avoid these penalties, FDA is requiring manufacturers to submit in writing within 60 days a detailed description of their plans to prevent youth access to the smoke-free vapor products they make and sell.

A numbers game

In his statement, Dr. Gottlieb refers to having “preliminary data” that shows an “epidemic” of vaping among young people. But it is perplexing, if not suspicious, that the FDA is threatening extreme enforcement action (e.g. removing products from the market) without releasing the data. It’s especially curious given that the public data from the annual National Youth Tobacco Surveys (NYTS), 2011 – 2017, clearly shows that youth use of vapor products, cigarettes, and tobacco products as a whole is declining since a peak in 2015. (See graph and chart below.)

Yep. He does not care , and frankly, he was just taking a long leisurely lay of the land before deciding where to go. He's a jerk. And I, frankly am very displeased that the government is now so , I don't even know but willing to proceed not just ON numbers or DOCTORED numbers but a percentage and no one is at all outraged by this.

Common core== Forced Government Education for Sheep.

So glad my kid only went to public school a fraction of the time.

A recent article in our local paper pointed to a study that showed millions of teens are vaping something other than flavors. I will let you guess. I don't think I am allowed to say here. Yet the FDA states flavors are the issue.

I don't see how this is now an epidemic when the rate of teenage vaping (according to US government reports) has gone down since 2015.
I'm a student of a Masters in Public Health program and we just recently covered this. I am also an avid vaper, it got me away from cigarettes which I thought would never be possible.
While I agree that vaping is the safer option to cigarettes, it's not the vape itself that's the issue. Nicotine does a lot to the developing brain and addiction early on (as many of us know) can have some pretty serious consequences.

Again, I completely agree that if a teenager is going to pick from between cigarettes and vaping, vaping is the way to go. Overall, kids are going to smoke something. May as well be a safer alternative.

A bit over a year ago my grandson told me that almost ALL his friends were 'juuling' at some point. Last nite I asked him how the 'epidemic' was spreading with his friends and at school; he told me that it's VERY rare that he sees anyone 'juuling' or vaping anymore... apparently, it was a fad that has run its course!?! BUT, special interests and the govt have an 'egenda' to 'save the youth from a lifetime of nicotine addiction'!!
According to my grandson, alcohol has regained its dominance for teen usage... probably always has been the main threat, it's just that the emerging new 'evil' happened to be vaping and all the 'born-again-do-gooders' picked up a new placard to wave in government's face!!

I started smoking when I was teenager in the 1960's. I also started drinking around the same time. That was illegal then and it's illegal now. What has changed? I'm 71 years old and haven't had a cigarette since February of 2012, when I started vaping. I see kids smoking all the time. I've never seen one vaping. Maybe I live a sheltered life.

It was probably just like those fidget-spinners last summer - this year's fad has ended!

Wasn't as much moral panic about fidget spinners tho...

As an ADHD person, I am super proud to have never tried a fidget spinner. I'll knit, because it is productive and reminds me of my dead grandmother who taught me.

I was pretty proud to not even know what one LOOKED like until a few months ago. They look really really dumb. If they work, I am not sure I want to hear about it.
