Is it just a "cover/legalize" agreement or do they actually include information in it? Does that vape shop sell authentic batteries (I am assuming they would, if they knew to do this). This is kinda interesting.

Anna
Yes I know that this shop only sells authentic batteries. They're a store that's part of a chain. The thing that they make you sign is more like to document that you bought the batteries and that you are fully responsible for any outcome of misuse etc.

You want minimum wage vape shop employees to know Ohms law and basic electrical safety?
Exactly. When I worked in a shop I would not build coils for mech use. I am not educated in the use of them. I would not recommend batteries for mech use either. I had made myself notes on what battery for what wattage usage. And always kept Mooch's chart on computer.

I find the "minimum wage" thing a bit insulting. A lot of minimum wage earners are my kiddo and my kiddo's friends. I would LOVE to be able to send him to a great college without BOTH of us incurring a lot of debt, but that seems to have been my parent's generation's thing. My son works full time and attends college part time because he doesn't wish to accumulate debt, nor place an undue burden on me. He's perfectly intelligent, as are many of his friends, and also perfectly functional.

I remember my own first minimum wage job, I was 16 years old. It was a lot of fun and I was a good employee. I'd argue that waiting tables is arguably more difficult than a discussion of general battery safety and wattage, that's a lot of balls to keep in the air and tables to keep me busy, in fact I really enjoyed it. It's perfectly possible to be a decent employee without earning six figures. Heck, I was probably more profitable as a waitress then than I am now, and I was earning $70K out of college in the science field, but didn't enjoy it and went BACK to school for MORE debt to earn a lower wage, knowing that going in.

Money doesn't equate to competence. I feel like I should type that one million times, but it's a straw man argument, IMO.

You do realize that a full-time minimum wage job is actually a luxury for many in this economy, right? Perhaps I am a bit touchy on this matter, but I live in a very poor part of the country and it's not as simple as dollars equaling (S)ense. I've met very wealthy folks that have not impressed me with their work ethic just as much as I've met people very low on the wage scale with excellent skills and a good work ethic.

I don't mean any offense, it's just first time jobs, etc, minimum wage, they probably aren't going to know that much given the state of the education system (either way) these days.

When I graduated high school, I knew ohms law and used it. (In fact I knew 6th grade.) We had actual experiments in class so that it stuck, humorously, coil building. Now a days, these kids come out and haven't done much except memorize for the test. It's sad. They don't have a chance unless they use it on their own.

I understand struggling though, I haven't had a full time job in many years. I got one about 5 years years ago, chemical lab tech for mine. I was running the tests, and looking at the manual. It wasn't even in proper English. I looked to see who wrote it. Oh no. I came back the next day with my chem book and wrote up all the formulas and instructions to do the test properly. The employer was happy, until he got the test results from the crude ore. Everything failed.

They were happier with bad tests that said the stuff was good, rather than proper tests that actually showed the truth. Fired. Lol! Eventually, the purchaser of the material ran their own tests and discovered it was out of spec. All those people lost their jobs as the plant went into skeletal operations (to avoid land reclamation).

Anyways, the kids I see that work at the vape shops that are min wage are utterly oblivious to knowledge about it except rumors about Cloudz. The ones that know how to keep customers and have knowledge, well they aren't making min wage for long, unless it's a big franchise/corp operation.

I'm just speaking from my own experience at vape shops in person. Most don't know much, loligag about on their phones and blow bubble gum flavored cloudz. I just get my pure flavors and leave.

Well, I'd say that's a much better point made above. I don't frequent that many vape shops, but when I do I'm often going to a one man operation run by the owner (due to overhead) or a chain, in which many of the employees may not be so knowledgeable. I can certainly agree on the state of education in this country, and it's a shame that math and science isn't a more enjoyable pursuit. I will say that most of the math/science my son learned was via a private Catholic school (around here, you really can't do it, as many of them.... don't require birth certificates and are places where some of our... Visitors with wealth put their kids for school), so I reluctantly sent my son to a bunch of charter schools, but really, he ended up so bored I let him take the GED (which he passed, with "honors" LOL, not quite sure what that means, but he did tell me that he learned nothing new, math-wise, since 6th grade, back East) and it's sad that allowed him to pass a HS equivalency test "with honors" but I believe my state may be hovering around third from the bottom education-wise, last time I checked.

I am rather sad about that, but my son's always been an autodidact (since birth) and tends to move from obsession to obsession, so I don't worry too much about his future, I'm sure he'll wind up in a fine place, but the same could be said for many of his friends, though I'm sure some of them don't know Ohm's law, but could learn it. That's the great thing about young kids, they CAN learn things easily.... Whether any vape store is going to take the time to do that kind of education, I do not know, but that is more on the owner (IMO) than the minimum wage kids.

But, I don't think it's an unreasonable expectation for vape store minimum wage kids to learn a fair amount about e-cigarettes, heck, even my son knew more (without working in a vape store at all) about batteries, safety and whatnot, that I did, because he took the time to research it, because *he* wanted to be safe. I guess maybe my kid isn't the greatest barometer, as he's crazy smart DESPITE his education (though I did have to do a fair bit of remediation and deprogramming) and it's a shame that more parents today won't stand up and Do That. I do think that has made my kiddo a bit less snowflak-y than some of his generation, because I never had problems going in over reasonable issues and supporting my kid, and that included stuff like volunteering and whatnot, which I wish more parents had time to do. Because some of the stuff being taught these days is rather shocking.

But look, I kind of see it as an elder (I suppose) in my community, to talk with/argue/educate the kids around to new ideas that may have been completely suppressed by the current education. I could go on forever about that, but I'll stop by saying the problem perhaps isn't minimum wage, and I always wince, sometimes, at the topics my son chooses to write about in college classes, because I know it's controversial, but it's been nice to see that he can explore his ideas and get graded "fairly" regardless of it being a controversial topic. I will say that he's smarter than your average high school grad (probably) and tends to hang out with older folks because of it, fairly often. My hope is really that he leaves Tucson, even if I stay, because I see him blooming in a more productive environment that will appreciate his skills. I do in fact caution him at times about "Employer culture" because there is certainly the possibility of being "too smart" for one's position.

So I guess the burden is more upon the educational system itself and its attempts to create mindless sheep. But, having worked with MANY very poor kids around here, I will tell you that intelligence is very different from education, and there is always a HUGE pool of intelligent kiddos looking for more answers (and to be fair, some harmless OR harmful dolts) and the right employer can spot, train, and harness our intelligent and miseductated youth, and that is what they NEED to learn to do, because pretty much, that's going to wind up being what we GOT, period. IF schools can no longer educate children, employers are going to have to do it, since even colleges are falling into the "Appease them! No downtwinkles!" as it were, trap. When schools start arguing about who is going to get "safe spaces" stocked with tissues and cuddly animals and free contraception, I really worry about my tax dollars at work. NO employer should be doing that, and we are talking COLLEGE LEVEL.

Well, I hope this time passes, and education rebounds. Sorry to go on, time for me to end for the day, I think...

It is a very different time today. When I was in high school a local appliance/floor covering/furniture store hired me. I was fascinated in electronics. The owner's son had went through a Naval training course in communications electronics and I studied under him evenings using the Naval course. I was repairing TVs and Radios in no time. I wasn't interested in pay, I wanted to know more about electronics. Now, the money came of course and by the time I was a senior had a car, motorcycle, etc. That was also rural U.S.. A bit different outlook on things than I see in densely populated areas. The sheeple effect seems to be directly proportional to the population density. IMHO.

I worked retail for a long time, multiuse items in a “tobacco accessory store” and even at our lower wages working with burnouts our owner expected us to have knowledge about all of our items. Product knowledge was huge and we prided ourselves in it. So yes, I expect someone who works in a vape store to have a decent grasp on the products they sell.

Honestly I wouldn't have continued to vape if I would have been steered towards an MTL set up.

Nothing wrong with them but I'm a quick(ish) learner and would have struggled.
MTL is something as simple as a Juul or one of the new Innokins... they are bridge gear to help you transition. Moving to DL is a personal choice ( and a good one for me ). Don't diss MTL just like we shouldn't bash Sub ohm. We all have someone we know who isn't ready for a direct lung hit... they are looking for that cigarette sensations. I keep a MTL in my home to offer guests ... or its off to the kitchen and it's window for them and their combustibles along with a trash can shaped ashtray that reads "Keep America Beautiful. Don't Litter."

I already had to find a new vape shop as the first one I went to sold me the V8 Smok kit but never has the M2 coils they take. They sold me Q2s and X4s before I did more research. Luckily before I popped an X4 into my tank.

When I asked for M2s, I got a pack of Q2s. When I tried to explain they wouldn't work well at all in the stick, I got a blank stare. And an explanation they don't stock them. Ever.

So I went to another. This place stocks every prebuilt coil for every single thing they sell, plus some for stuff they've never sold.

Not only that, the clientele were more my age and I got an explanation of Ohm's law when asking about a regulated mod.

TBF, shop 1 seems to be geared a little more towards functioning as a hang out spot with lots.

Shop 2 is where I'll go for everything but juice from now on.

Before I went all Rebuildable, I would pop into a couple of local shops for an occasional coil while I waited for my online order to arrive. I always found that I knew more than the people in the shops including the owners because I started vaping before there were vape shops and regulated mods. When I first started vaping I had to do my own research on what devices to get and how to use them Even now local shops do not carry the newest mods and tanks available online and their prices are way higher. Also with the younger guys and gals working in most shops, they are most likely to sell the devices and tanks that appeal to them instead of what is more suitable to the customer. In my experience there are 3 types of vapers. Those who jump in head first, do the research and look for the most satisfying vape experience they can get. The Young ones who just want the coolest cloud machine they can buy and then the ones who just want a simple easy to use set-up to help them quit smoking. Vape shops should train their employees to serve all 3 types of customers but unfortunately this won't happen without some regulation and I am against regulating the industry any more. People need to take some responsibility themselves and do their own research on what will work for them. This forum is a great place for that ;)

@gofishtx I can't recall that any increased regulations ended up causing better customer service in any industry in history. Usually, natural selection takes care of that all on it's own. Maybe I just have a bad attitude of the gov, lol.
Oh no, I am against increasing regulations, you misread my post. I'm just stating that people need to do their own research on what to buy for their needs and not rely on vape shop employees. We do not need more government regulations to be our babysitter.

I wonder why doing your own research is like, so hard with e-cigs. Honestly, when I started (dual using) I put way less thought into something like that than my own laptop, which, I even entered several stores and put it to the test prior to purchasing it online. I mean... It makes no sense, actually, I'd think that putting something to one's lips and inhaling it would lead an intelligent person to actually do some research before doing that, but I didn't. I don't know if the lifelong spiel about how cigs were going to kill me (which I already knew) gave me a certain... insouciance.... about buying things to inhale, but gosh, gee, I probably spent more time getting to know my new asthma inhaler (damn you, new patents for delivery mechanisms! I mean, other than e-cigs, I mean.... never mind) than my vape equipment.

When I got here, it was because I was having problems with my sub0hm setup gifted me by my son and I really WANTED to quit vaping, but same thing initially-- listened to my kiddo, bought some e-juice, and off I went. So, I'm hardly a good example of what I preach, though I WILL say that once I learned there was so much information to be had, I kinda was off to the races with it for a while. A good vape shop is the last line of defense (sometimes) against complete idiocy, and if they're selling rewraps and mech mods to new users, I despair. And, I think more research is EVER more necessary given the dizzying amount of setups and options these days.

I don't know why it is that someone-- even me-- who's a non-interested purchaser of many electronics (including cellphones) would do more research on that than even a single PIECE of research on my e-cig equipment.

I have to say, that is one reason I am fond of this forum. It definitely started me down the right path and kept me vaping, and I'm so glad I tumbleweeded myself here.... Honestly, I had no idea how much I Did Not Know, and some of it was really safety-related stuff, that I SHOULD have educated myself in.

Perhaps it was the cigs are easy== e-cigs should be equally so effect, IDK, but it's a bad thing and I know I am NOT alone in approaching it that way at first.....

What's a vape shop?
The ones around here ...... me off so bad with their massive mark ups and just not giving a damn what customers wanted that I even stopped looking for any such thing as a decent vape shop. Eff em.
I don't need any stankin' vape shop.

I actually do drop into one local combo tobacco/vape shop (!!??) about twice a year for a non vape item. I Purposely vape like a fiend when I go in there just to let them know I don't spend a damn dime on their over priced stuff.

That is why this forum is so great, you can not only do your own research but glean information and recommendations from other members so that you can learn safety and what is the best set-up for you. I can understand a new vaper wanting to just grab and go with something simple. The problem is without knowledge of what they are buying, many who are not technology savvy get pushed into purchasing something that is not grab and go friendly or someone who needs a little more than what they have, get sold a mechanical when what they really needed was a step-up device
