Did you read the scientific paper that I quoted twice? I even put a link to it. You might check it out. Nicotine is a bitter alkaloid that is used to help cross pollunation of the plants. Nicotine doesnt kill hummingbirds so how could it kill humans? All it does is taste bitter and cause the hummingbirds to bugger off and go somewhere else.

Yes I did read it but at that point there was no link at the time and I was writing my response as you were posting it so apologies for that.

Your dont appear to be saying the same thing now as you did in the OP however

There is no tar in cigarettes. What is called tar is actually sugar that has been burned and crystalized. That is what people who smoke are addicted to. That is what is in cigarettes that causes so much addiction. Its the sugar you inhale into your lungs when you smoke.

If your point is that burning sugar in cigarettes is bad for you then I'm not going to argue with that. It's the claim that sugar is what smokers are addicted too that I have an issue with.

So let's see....if this (one reference) is true, why not make patches and gums from sugar then instead of nicotine?

And they aren't addicted? Why do they keep going back? :D

Ha! We were typing at the same time Css.

The reason they use nicotine in patches and gum is because that is what they have told you that you are addicted to. Its to sell patches and gum. The reason that people go back to smoking is because they sugar they were getting. If nicotine was the only thing that was addictive then people would be addicted to the gum and patches and never go back to smoking because they wouldnt have to in order to get what they are craving.

I mean if nicotine in tobacco plants and other nightshade plants is so deadly and addictive how do they cross pollunate? Wouldnt the nicotine kill anything that tried to cross pollunate it?

No, not necessarily. Adult humans can eat honey....but honey can be deadly for infants. Who knows what animals (birds) can digest, inhale, or whatever, that might not be harmful to us. It's called nature. Every species has its own natural tolerances.

That is so stupid.. I used to like chewing gum, now If I chew a stick of gum once a year that's a lot. It's not the sugar in tobacco that's addicting, it's nicotine and there is also the psychological part. going back to smoking has nothing to do with sugar. BRB I need a brownie

Are you addicted to potatoes and tomatoes?

People contend that tobacco is not addictive in itself. Rather, it’s the additives and extra formulation tobacco companies put in conventional cigarettes that leave you wanting for more.
Many people, instead of quitting outright, have shifted to chemical-free, organically grown tobacco products. And using these, they have been able to cut down their smoking in half and eventually quit completely.
Organic tobacco cigarettes taste very differently from regular cigarettes, which lead many to believe that tobacco on conventional cigarettes are nothing but a means to get you to ingest addictive additives and chemicals to get you hooked. Almost everyone who has shifted to organic cigarettes are unable to return to smoking regular cigarettes due to the offensive chemical taste which becomes readily apparent after you have gotten used to pure tobacco.

We know they contain nicotine and sugars, but we're not popping potatoes and tomatoes in our mouths every 20 minutes, are you?

Then how can nicotine be addictive? In fact I can tell you exactly what is in cigarettes that is addictive I can name you the exact chemical. Its called theobromine and its the main ingredient of cocoa. Its the same stuff in chocolate that can kill a dog if they eat too much of it and its the stuff in chocolate that makes chocolate so addictive.

Oh I see. So big pharma said "hey, we know it's the sugars in cigs that's really addicting but just for the heck of it, let's fool them and make them pay for nicotine replacement instead". That's absurd!

People go back to smoking for a lot of reasons. There's a zillion other substances in cigs that people still crave even with nicotine replacement. To point out one and say that's the culprit seems pretty willy-nilly to me.

And some people are addicted to the hand to mouth thing as well. That's another reason NRTs don't work.

I don't think anyone will dispute that sugar in cigs may be addicting but to claim it's that, and nicotine is not, is just ridiculous.

I'd need much more evidence than that one article to convince me otherwise.

Is it really that absurd? Have you ever listened to commercials advertising drugs? Have you listened to the side effects of those drugs? The list of side effects of all drugs is way longer than the list of benefits. In other words there is a better chance that drugs prescribed by your doctor will harm you rather than make you well. The motive is simple. Its money. How many billions of dollars is at stake?

The impossibility of achieving mutual knowledge -- that is to say, a fully reciprocal understanding between two minds -- is a familiar philosophical problem. For knowledge to be mutual, not only must you know what the other knows, but the other must know that you know it; accordingly, you must know that the other knows that you know it, and the other in turn must know that you know that they know that you know. As this regress recedes, the likelihood of achieving each of its levels diminishes to the infinitesimal; and still there is no point of rest at which symmetry is achieved between what each knows of the other.

So which is it? Theobromine or sugar?

Yes, and they forewarn you about it too. They don't keep it a secret just to fool people and make money.

So you dont think that the billions of dollars they make every year is a factor then? What about that heart medication made by Bayer that was killing people that the FDA approved? It took years to get the drug off the market because it was generating so much money. As to the other question you asked its both. Think of it this way. Its like you eating pounds of chocolate a day for 20 years then trying to give up and stop eating chocolate. Can you go without sugar? Can you go without chocolate? Its the same thing with cigarettes. That and humans can be trained to do certain things just like dogs or any other animal. If a human does something long enough it becomes a habit that is hard to break. Like people who work for 30 years and then try to retire but cant seem to stop working so they go find another job to do or they just dont retire at all. Its too much of a habit for them at that point and as a result they cant quit doing it.

People get addicted to a lot of things for a lot of different reasons. Caffeine is addicting. Sugar free coke is also addicting. I personally avoid sugar like the plague (and caffeine, for that matter). I don't eat chocolate every day. When I was younger, I ate one candy bar a month...on the first day of PMS. Needed some salt then too. So....?

The "habit" of smoking is quite evident...as is the nicotine addiction. Seems you're going to need a bit more proof to convince most of the people here.

Drew, in the other thread, I tried correcting you on a few small facts, like the word "Similar" not meaning "the same" or "identical". I was unsucessful. So, I'm not going to bother correcting all the MANY factual and reasoning errors you've made here, I'm just going to sum up.

You are wrong. 100% wrong.

You are taking one or two points of information, which you don't even understand correctly, and totally disregarding all the tons and tons of other research regarding nicotine addiction.

Nicotine actually changes physical structures within the brain. It converts seratonin and dopamine receptors PERMANENTLY into dedicated nicotine receptors. This is the mechanism of nicotine addiction.

Sugars, other chemicals, etc, in the tobacco may ADD to the addictive nature of tobacco, by making it more enjoyable, by making it absorb faster for faster effect, etc. But the main addictive mechanism is nicotine. And there's a hell of a lot of science PROVING that.

You can hold whatever opinion you want, but facts are facts, and you are wrong on the facts.
