Hey Fellow Kayfuners! Loong time lurker, first time poster. I've read thru the entire thread! Yes, all of it! Learned a TON of stuff from you all, vapedivrr, midnight, bronze, kiwi, dusty and a whole lot more. Read thru at least 2 flame wars, one way back that I can't even remember what it was about. The most recent was
" The Clone War " back about page 970-980. Just wanted to jump in and say thanks, never a dry hit, never a leak, lots of interesting coil attempts, some worked, some didn't.
Got a ton of useful info from vapedivrr videos which is probably why I have had few problems. Thanks much!

A little background. Started vaping 2 months ago using a V2 e-cig I bought at a gas station when I was buying a pack of smokes. Caught my eye because it came with a USB charger. Cut back on smoking big time but didn't quit completely. Not enough vapor and especially a lack of " throat hit " but it got my curiosity up. Got an MVP and Nautilus Mini and I was now a non-smoker! Woohoo! Then I was on vacation in northern Michigan and found a local vape shop looking for a juice to enjoy while camping and canoeing. Browsing around I saw the rebuildables and started asking questions ( BTW not marked as clones but in the $30 range ) and wasn't really familiar with the whole authentic/clone thing yet. Ended up buying a KFL+ to bring home with me. I guess DustyD would call it a counterfeit since it has all the SM markings and all on the bottom. So, I guess I am the proud owner of a counterfeit Kayfun! Had no idea what the hell I was doing at the time. But it works awesome and is very well built, I just don't know who the maker is! Sorry! That's when I found you guys and started reading.

Now, on to my recent try at a different Wick setup. Don't know if this has been tried before but here goes. Coil is 3/32 30ga 8 wraps comes out as 2 ohms. For the wick, just got some Japanese cotton which, I think is why this works! Stuff wicks unbelievable! Coil mounted perpendicular and as the wick comes out of coil I gently turn it so it runs alongside of and just gently touching the coil then down to just touch the deck. Repeat on other side so there is a wick on each side of coil and down to deck. Top side of coil is open and unrestricted which I think it is why this works so well! Draw is awesome, vapor is good and flavor is incredible! Someone try it and tell me what you think. P.S. I tried the Truman and it was pretty good too but seemed to restrict my air flow. If I can get some pictures I will.

Once again, thank you all for your knowledge and pictures. You have influenced my building style and technique so much.

P.S. I think I am now the Old Man on the block as I will be 62 in November! Smoked 45+ years and because of vaping I havent felt this good in years! I love it! Sorry for the lengthy post.

Hi Newell. Enjoyed your post. Not even I have read EVERY post! :)

I'm not too far from you....55 years old here. Smoked Marlboros for 40+ years. Sounds like your progression was similar to most of us. Dipped your toe in the water and now you're doing laps. I grew up in Chicagoland. Lived the first 38 years of my life there including by Arlington Park and then the Fox River valley (Dundee/Sleepy Hollow and Elgin area). Have/Had friends/family in St. Charles and Geneva. Fished the dam on the river. So I know the area well however Randall Road was the boondocks when I lived there. Now it is Mayhem City!

Welcome to ECF and the Kayfun thread. Will be glad to share stories. Yes, see if you can post some photos of your setups. Makes it easier to discuss. I find building the Kayfun to be easy.

Thanks guys and sorry I forgot about you qorax, your posts and pics early on were a big help. Yes, I read every post to glean all the info I possibly could and it paid off with almost flawless builds every time.

Worked for 15 years as an auto mechanic and spent 26 years teaching automotive school so I love to tinker and this is right up my alley! Taught auto electrical/electronics so ohms law is second hand. Never in my wildest dreams did I think ohms law would be useful again!

Yeah bronze, moved to the Fox River valley when I retired a few years ago and I love it! Lots to do in the area around Geneva/St. Charles. Lots of festivals, picnics, fishing! Quitting smoking has been a boon for my lifestyle. Lots of walks and bike riding along the river!

I look forward to sharing info and shootin' the breeze with you guys.

Question: I have a KFL+ clone that does not have the scre in the bottom for re filling it. I believe my leaking problems stem from having to take the top off to fill it.

I've seen videos on how to build these things, but they all have either genuine or a close enough copy that it has the plug (screw) in the bottom.

There is a tiny screw, to the left of the oval air hole. I can see the threads. Then, to the right of the air hole is a very large slotted screw at an angle that appears to lead to a tiny hole on the deck that is partially covered by the chimney when assembled. Is this large screw where I should be filling it, or does this screw serve another purpose?

Thanks.

What you have is a Kayfun 3.1 clone, the original Kayfun model. The right oval hole is the fill port and you're supposed to insert a small plastic tipped needle against a spring loaded ball valve to fill with juice. But the valve doesn't work well and is easily damaged or jammed. I don't think anyone has been able to use it as designed and everyone just fills from the top.

The leaking is likely from a damaged or missing o-ring resulting in a loss of vacuum in the tank. Check all your o-rings, especially the tiny one at the top.

Wow - that is so awesome! Thanks so much! Actually, mine looks less like a clone, and more of an exact copy. It's well done - very well done. The tank section joints are 100% invisible when assembled.

Again, thanks for shedding light on this for me. Very very useful.

I think I DID damage the O-ring. It got wedged between the chimney part and the top, and probably cut it, at least partially.

Welcome my friend and glad your really enjoying the kayfun. I also have tried what you call the Truman but haven't tried what you are describing. So from the edge of coil, you tail is then going to the opposite juice channel? Via along side of coil? Every time I have run a wick over the top or along side, it seems to reduce the longevity of wick and airflow but like I said, haven't tried that one. Will check it out my friend.

Oh, that side fill port works perfectly, flawlessly. I've been filling my 3.1ES that way since two years now, never ever a problem and no backfires either. That fill port is one of the reasons why I love the 3.1ES so much. And I have never filled any K'fun/Russian from the top!

Hello vapedivrr, and thanks for imparting your knowledge! I bow in your general direction and repeat " I'm not worthy " :thumb:  Yeah, just a gentle turn out of end of coil, alongside coil then down to deck. I think it works because of the superior wicking of the Japanese cotton but I'm not sure. I got three refills off one wick and original didn't look that bad. BUT, I am using an MVP at between 8-9.5 watts so pretty low. Just dry burned, rewicked yesterday and still working awesome! Fairly high in the resistance department tho @ 2 ohms so don't know how it will work if you pour on the power! Draw is awesome tho because top of coil is open and been getting a lot of flavor out of it. I was going to try a 1.5-1.6 ohm next time and see how it works! Give er a try and let me know what you think!

Edit: Not truely a micro coil at 3/32, more a mini but splitting hairs here!

In my authentic 3.1s I've used the fill hole exclusively using 20g plastic tip luer lock dispensers (the pink ones, not the green). They fit perfectly and I've never had any leaking issues. I find the 18g green ones a tad too big. I do flush out the valve occassionally.

I picked up my 20g plastic tips (pink) on eBay and have been using them on Russians for well over a year now with no leaking problems. The only problems I have encountered have been of my own doing when I don't hold the proper tension or angle on the tip and juice leaks down the outside of the device. Can't blame the fill port for operator error though......

Welcome to the den Newell! Fine introduction and glad to make your acquaintance! We like lengthy posts that are substantial like yours.

I think I am now the Old Man on the block as I will be 62 in November!

Probably in your block. I turned 67 last February. ;)

Looking forward to your posts and insights!
