Vapedvvr's vids are great, I have watched every one of them, and I had all ready read your review of the 28 ga that's why I why to try the 30 ga, plus I want to try to get the silica working for me, I would like to be able to dry burn and vape on.

Yes, the 30ga is best for the Provari provided you are doing a 10-wrapper at 2mm ID. Do you have a 2mm diameter instrument to wrap around? Lord kinda got caught with his pants down and didn't have one ready so he sort of did a makeshift. Probably not ideal but its working for him for now. The boy deserves a break! He worked hard. :)

I guess I'm next to need some help. I've watched vapdivrr's videos as well as a few others. I've tried 7 and 8 wraps of 28 awg micro coils with cotton. I've tried 7 wraps of ribbon cable on silica with the figure 8. With all of them I have the same issue. I get dry hits and not much vapor. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm thinking maybe i wrapped the coil too tight on the silica and maybe I need to use a thinner piece of cotton with the micro coil. I am trying really hard to like the kayfun, but I may have to stick to drippers and gennies.

7 or 8 wraps of 28g? what diameter coil? and what mod? the dry hits are most likely due to the wick. the cotton needs to be consistant the entire length. no whimpy sections in the wick. you do need some resistance when pulling the wick through. also the meat of the cotton tails needs to be right on the channel slots. I think of it like this, the juice comes into those slots , I like the wick right there for it to slurp up the juice as it come into the chamber. I have seen a lot of wicks that look good near the coil, but then thin out as the wick comes down the sides, this doesn't work to good. poor vapor is most likely the result of the improper wicking, but could also be coil placement. if the coil is to high, you will have decreased vapor. I find it best when the bottom of the coil is just below the screw heads.

What size in fractions does 2mm convert to? would 3/32" be close enough?

A 5/64ths drill bit ='s 2mm. 5/64ths is a common size drill bit that can be got at any hardware store. 3/32nds = 2.4mm. That would probably be OK but I'm a little on the .... side. Try to get yourself a 5/64ths if you're near a hardware store. How thick is your silica?

I should have a drill bit that size in my basement.
Thanks

I have some 1 mm, and was going to get some 2mm also tomorrow, I also have some 3mm.
theres a great little package by dremel, its sold in both depot or blows. its like 10 bucks and is in tool section. this one package has 1/32-3/64-1/16-5/64-3/32-7/64 and 1/8.

LOL.. I can't believe you remember me doing that. Yea.. two trips to Asheville in a row (or was it three?).. didn't lock my mech and it went off in my purse, burning my finger the first time and my hand the second time. I'll never forget riding down the road and smelling something burning and thinking "what is that smell!?"

Yep. That's what friends are for, right?

I have done a lot of coils for the kayfun and definitely have noticed that the wick is the main cause of dry hits. on average I probably do at least 2 coils per day, every day for the past couple months. sometimes when doing these coils I may rush a little because im anxious to see the results. in all of these rushed builds dry hits are the results. I can even see different levels of dry hits, some kind of dry, some really dry, and some just a fraction dry. although some of these dry hits can be attributed to inconsistencies in the density of the wick and thickness of the wick, most are caused by the wick placement in relation to the channels, or a combination of both. sometimes the wick tails may be placed just off center to the channel, this works good, but not optimal. my best results are when the wick tail comes fairly straight down from the coil and to the center of the slot or channel. if the tail is off to one side or the other of the slot it does affect the vape. not only straight down to the slot, but it needs a slight bit of slack. if it just reached the slot its ok but not perfect. the tail needs to actually be slightly bunched at the slot, but just slightly. also if the cotton wick has separations, like the grains in the cotton, its not optimal, especially at the slots. at the slots the wick needs to be all together with no separation in the grains. its a fine line with the wick for sure and I can see how some can have wicking issues. now some just throw the wick somewhere close and its perfect, so go figure.

Guys,my first microcoil attempt:
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did Vapdivrr's tutorial but wanted at least 1.2ohms. Did 12 wraps 28ga kanthal on a 16ga needle. Cotton (organic) from Walgreen's. This is soooo amazing! I want to thank Vapdivrr, Qorax, Digitals, and everyone else who has helped in this thread and made it so easy for me to try this. I didn't take any pics but the coil came out beautiful and my NLV Gold has never tasted better! This rocks. I was actually using just a 3/4 wrap on ekowool for .8 ohms and this is right up there with how hard it hits! Microcoils from now on!!!!!!

I'm going to get some organic cotton to try. Got myself a magnify glass with a light and when working with my nextel tonight noticed my hands looked like they had glitter all over them when I was done:confused: didn't like that..but I'm rockin the wick

I was skeptical because I noticed it is processed with hydrogen peroxide.........but I didn't notice any bad flavor. I only just filled her up and I can KINDA taste a little slight cotton but I've read how it goes away.. I'm sold on this though! My ekowool will be used for rebuilding my protank heads and that's it.

Interesting read. Let me impart my silica experience for the silica users. Silica falls apart quickly. It unravels and resembles one's hair shortly after removing their fingers from a wall socket. I simply push this frazzled mess down the sides giving it no special treatment or thought where it is going. I just make sure all strands are bent over and going downward. The end result is the same exact vape each and every time.

Let it be known that I am not trying to talk up silica and/or put down cotton. Not at all! I personally cannot tell much of a difference likely because my mouth and lungs have gone through the torments of more than 438,000 cigarettes over the course of my life. I don't doubt for a second those who say cotton is better than silica. I use silica simply because I cannot tell the difference and it is more user friendly in terms of durability and cleanability. No other reason. (Though it could be said removing and replacing a cotton wick is hardly any more work - or perhaps even less)

One tip I read somewhere on another thread, was they would take a regular sewing thread and tie the ends of the silica, so it would not unravel, and then use the thread to pull the silica threw the coil.

Nice trick! Maybe I'm old school, but the frazzeled wick ends produce more surface area and, in my mind, promote wicking. I'm sure there will be some propellerhead that comes up behind me and tears apart my theory. And he/she would probably be right. :)

I've never tried silica on my KF's. Not because one's better than another but I didn't have any on hand. I started off with qtips and any other cotton laying around the house and then finally remembered to buy some. I continue to use cotton because one little box of it is like a lifetime supply now. It performs well and have very little to complain about. That being said I may try silica or ekowool on my RDA. Cotton burns way too easy on the RDA going subohm on my Nemesis. So much so I am having to replace the cotton almost everyday. On my KF's I only replace once a week but probably can go longer. KF's are efficient little boogers....
