so, as I've shown here a few days ago, I opened up my feed channels slightly. from the many builds I've done on my kayfun 3.1 I've always felt that the juice delivery was a little lacking once the power level was raised, and to use it at 15 watts required extra effort regularly on my part to avoid dry hits. I've always had to compensate and it hasn't really been as auto feeding as I would have liked. it did feed enough to vape it at ~10 watts or less no problem though, and even at 10-11 watts it was a great feed but not as great of a vape. crank up the power and the vape improved but the feed started to lag. in contrast, my kayfun mini seems to feed a bit better and I wouldn't think the need to ever screw with the mini, it feeds well up to and even over 15 watts. actually my mini is the best atty I've ever used, making the full sized 3.1 just a little lacking in comparison, which is why I decided to play with the channels here. I have seen others say too that the mini edges out even the full sized kayfuns too, and having both I do agree.
opening up the feed is in effect very much like rejetting a carb, well opening the channels a bit has really made a difference in the feed, it now feeds easier. before, to take a primer puff I'd have to pull hard and get a few tiny bubbles raise up, after the mod I can take a less hard pull and get larger bubbles to come up with less effort.
after the mod when I built it the way I always have it winded up feeding too much, I went from being slightly under fed to now being over fed so I altered my build to suit the new setup.
second attempt I tried a little extra puff of hemp in the 2 side chambers and this proved to be too much reduction which brought me back to less feed and dry hits, so third build I decided on keeping the hemp wick but then using cotton for the extra puff in the sides and this has seemed to do it, been using this same build for 2 days now and it is working great, no dry hits at all ever, if I draw too much or too hard I can get it to oversaturate a bit still and even flood, but taking it easy it just feeds great at 15 watts and I'm getting really nice fully saturated vapes continuously, def not sorry I tried this, although honestly I think I did wind up going just a wee bit too much, now I have to adjust the flow with the build which isn't such a bad thing really
so with this modification it winds up now being adjustable feed, adjusted by the amount of extra cotton puff in the sides. if no extra cotton is used then it feeds too much but with the right amount of fill it is great and with too much fill it goes back to not feeding enough. from what I've been seeing I think that hemp winds up being a bit denser than cotton when saturated so hemp winds up blocking it a bit too much but then again this is only my first good build on this new setup so I'm sure after a few builds I'll get a feel for what's needed just as I originally did when it was stock.
I'm not going to go out and recommend anyone else really should go out and do this, and from experience now I can def say that a little goes a long way when it comes to opening the channels if you did decide to go that route. I have taken measurements and next time I open it up I'll confirm exactly how much material I winded up removing, but it is in and around the 10 thousandths range give or take a bit I think, i'll post exact when I confirm exact.
now with this setup I'm sure that this atty will work well at 20 watts and even more, it now comes down to how much extra cotton is stuffed in the 2 side chambers, it really now is adjustable, eventually I'll try her at higher wattage but right now I have it all set up with the collector tank to fit the semovar as a hybrid type fit so I can't just pop it onto a different mod atm, but I'll try a nice sub ohm high watt build in this thing soon enough, and now I know that it can def be built to keep up wicking at higher power levels. then, once I re establish a firm baseline here with my standard wicking I'll revisit my original vertical coils building again with the hemp and an extension for the long leg... who woulda thunk, hotrodding the kayfun is pretty cool
my bottom line, the kayfun has always been a little fiddly when trying to run higher power levels and almost invariably had trouble keeping up with wicking at high power levels no matter how I built it and always needed extra efforts to feed it to avoid dry hits, now it doesn't, and now it can be built to give even more feed than needed, so now it just simply comes down to building it "right" for it's new calibration. I also will try building it like the hydra as gdeal did tried in the hemp thread, quoted below. it didn't work out for him because the channels were too restrictive, but now, with this mod it might prove to be good like that too
