I do it clockwise too. While it's true screwing down the screw will shift the coil, doing so with a screw driver still in the coil allows you to get a really tight and firm coil that can be easily realigned without messing up the coil

Yes but see, with the wire on the outside for clockwise, when it heats and expands the wire gets pulled apart, but if it goes under the expansion just squeezes the coil together.
(Actually I don't think it matters, I never pay attention which way it's going, but I'm always up for ruffling Dusty's feathers)
