I am vaping this build as we speak, the only difference is I'm using twisted 32g. I'm able to get the .9 range with 9 wraps. I have tried single 28 and 29 but found it a little slow even with a mech, so by using the twisted 32 I'm able to get a much quicker vape. Either way it is a nice set up

how many strands?

Hey guys I need your help. I am having some taste troubles with my KFL+ lately... After setting it up, I am having an awesome vape for about 15-20 minutes, then the taste fades dramatically. I dont get burn hits, the wicking is really good... The problem is when it stars wicking on its own after the first puffs.
Someone told me that the cotton is too tight on the coil. I tried to let the cotton pass freely inside the coil but it didn't help. What am I doing wrong?
I use a standard microcoil, 32 gauge around 1.4 ohm on my evic supreme at 12 watts.
After this issue, have you opened it up and inspected the wick? How does it look ? has anything changed from the fresh build? Pics would help but as stated previously, maybe switching to a thicker gauge would be more consistent. Kayfun is optimal at gauges between 30 to 27g which gives you nice wick coverage. I would suspect with 32g and your resistances the wick coverage is lacking. With such a thin wire and less then optimal wick coverage your creating a lot of heat which maybe degrading your wick after a certain time. If this is the case then maybe try twisting your cotton a little before threading thru, this may give you a little more density in your wick which might hold up longer. what you might have to do because of your sort of large diameter coil is to trim some of your tails so they don't take up to much area in the lower deck. so my suggestion in the end is to add some density in your wick by slightly twisting the cotton before coiling but reduce some of the cotton after the coil

I'm still trying to pin point the best build for my Kayfun. I can consistently make a decent build but I feel like I could always improve right? How far does everyone like to keep their coil from the base? I try to keep mine fairly close without touching the bottom, maybe 1mm away. I usually use a larger diameter coil, on the 2.4mm screwdriver in my kit. I can add a fairly decent amount of wick but I've experimented with different wicking and it doesn't seem to make a ton of difference. I usually don't do the angled coil or the wick thats sloped around the wick channels. It's just two fluffed out ends that go directly above the juice channels. Argh... I'll post a pic when I finish the juice inside this tank. But yea... I'm wondering if I should change the positioning of my coil or use a smaller diameter coil. I am using rayon and 26 gauge wire, a microcoil with about 10 wraps or so (I don't really count), and it usually comes out between 1.2 and 1.4 ohms. Hits fine buuut... could it be better? I also want to drill out one of my Kayfuns to improve airflow but I'm afraid I'll mess it up and it won't work anymore. I'd rather have a tighter draw as is than to break it ya know?

Also, has anyone tried a vertical coil on this thing?

^ I position my coils such that I'm just shy of fitting my 1/16 drill bit between the coil and the air hole. So I'm guessing approx 1.3 or 1.4 mm

A bunch of folks have done the vertical coils. And the dual horizontal coils.

My personal fav for warmth and throathit is the dual horizontal.

But for a dense, moist and flavorful vape, the vertical is my fav. It's a little troublesome to wick tho

Then again, I find that a simple 2mm horizontal microcoil works exceedingly well. The improvements over most of the builds are really marginal and more sort of refinements to tweak your builds towards your preference.

Have not been on this thread lately as the two Kayfun Lites I use daily have been working flawlessly and I just rewick as needed and vape away. One of these Kayfun Lites has been showing it's self this week though.
I use a pretty mild flavor strawberry and cream juice that I make in this Kayfun all the time and this week it had started to give a almost burnt taste, but not exactly a burnt taste. I changed the wick three or four times and it did not help at all. I tried my regular organic cotton balls, Japanesse cotton pads and even Peaches and Cream yarn. None of these different wicks helped with the off taste I was getting. The 1.1 ohm coil made of 28 ga wire had been in this Kayfun for about 4 months, so I decided to replace it even though it was still working ok. This new coil solved my off taste problem it seems. The old coil had a flat gray look to it after I would do a dry burn to clean it.
Could this old coil have been what was really causing my taste problem? It sure seems like it to me, but I have never had this happen before.

That's a tough one. Coils do get old and could start to produce micro shorts and if that's the case can produce an off taste. I have heard of these micro shorts but really don't know much about them.

Yes, I'd believe so.

To also add: There would be gunk inside and between the coil wraps, which would take a more crystalline and rocky sedimentation form over time. And might not fully disappear while dry burning. This when fired up would add to the taste.

About the same as kiwi on the coil distance, about 1.3mm. About the wick, an angled coil works great but not with such a big coil diameter because it adds to much in the lower deck. If you wanted to try the angled coil and ledge wick, either go smaller in coil diameter, like no more then 1.8mm, or trim your tails. I have tried larger diameters coils and feel that they are airy compared to smaller ones but also like kiwi mentioned, anything you try is only marginally different. After many tweaks and builds you eventually come up with something you feel is the best but it takes alot of builds sometimes. For a vv device, 26g at 1.3 ohms is kind of slow, no? I love 26g but really only use it over 15 watts.

Thanks for everyone's replies.
These "micro shorts" could have been the problem as it had a very faint burnt taste, not real strong. I think the juice being one without a lot of flavor could have made the problem more evident.
After the recoil this Kayfun is working normal and no burnt taste at all.

I'm afraid my dry hit, cotton burning issue has won after trying several clones and a multitude of build variation I was batting abot 75%. Too much time wasted with the KLF. I was working with this for NETs exclusively but I think they are worse at isssues with nets than clearos. I've switched to RDA. Such I refreshing change I haven't had one bad "build". You can buy premade coils that just slide right in the set screw hole and use cotton pads for wicks, literally takes less than 10 minutes. I think ultimately my problem with the KFL is not being able to build a coil and the terrible struggle I had getting the coil ends to stay under those tiny screw heads without twisting up the coil creating hot spots. Hot spots are really the only explaination for my issues as I tried every possible variation with the wick.

Honestly I am much happier with the RDA's and I carry a VTR with an aerotank for work. I still have one KFL filled with Captain Black Dark NET and I'll admit it tastes good but not as good as from my brass monkey RDA.
