A dear friend of mine shared some article on FB entitled "do you know if you're kid is 'Juuling'?" ... Tbh, I didn't even read it. But everyone was freaking out about it. I had to step in and say look, this is propaganda. Short story - I said, if this is the worst thing your kids are doing, you should be grateful. ... Omg. The most ridiculous comment ever was, vaping was like "you're essentially freebasing nicotine." What?!?! I got told I should do more research. Hello? This, from an otherwise intelligent collection of people. The fear mongering is real. It's truly insane.

Do I think kids should be vaping? No. Am I promoting it? No. But omg. We have kids eating Tide pods, and people are freaking out about vaping? One person said they "knew several people whose e cigarettes exploded." I'm sorry, I call BS. (I didn't say that. But really? How many times has this really happened? This person said they personally know "several people"??? Yeah. No.") The frustration is real....

Sad to see how readily the propaganda absorbs into their brains

"Freebase" is a word in chemistry which has a specific meaning..

Freebase is the conjugate base (deprotonate) form of an amine, as opposed to its conjugate acid (protonated) form. The amine is often an alkaloid, such as nicotine.

We use freebase nicotine most commonly in eliquid... using the salts, (which until recent innovation, were seen as less heat stable,) can also be done, but the freebase form is more common.

This doesn't make the chemical nicotine the same as the chemical (illegal drug), for instance, it is simply a chemical term..

As to being hyper scared and all this anti vaping stuff flying around in the midst of ignorance and idiocy (such as the thought process that because nicotine is often used in freebase form it's suddenly as dangerous as illegal drugs.. total idiocy right there) i think is ridiculous. .

However, all we can do is to educate people whenever we run into ignorance of the topic.

Those that have taken a stand against without first educating themselves are typically not in the mindset to learn but a calm rebuttal may enlighten those that are.

Aren't juuls 50mg/ml? Ought not we be concerned about that?

Someone who was a Two or three pack a day smoker for a long time can actually benefit from higher doses of nicotine on a mtl low wattage device .(your looking anywhere between 100 - 150 mg per day then, which isn't very much different than 5ml per day of 18mg ejuice)

We have a couple people on this forum who still regularly use 48mg ejuice.. on a low wattage device where your only consuming 2-3 mg of ejuice per day it's not an unreasonable amount. ..

I think most vapers average around 50 - 150 mg of nicotine a day. .. some people need more than others.

Many of these kids using juuls are middle school.

There are laws against selling to minors same as there are laws against them using alcohol

The first time we make alcohol illegal because some underage kids got a hold of some we can consider outlawing a vaping device for the same reason. ..

The government needs to go after the source of how these kids are getting their hands on things they aren't old enough to buy, and stop messing around with the people who can engage in what they are engaging in legally, because they are plenty old enough, and doing so for their own health.

Right, and Juul pretty much introduced the industry to the concept of nicotine salts. In fact, they have a patent on it, but they don't seem to be enforcing it vigorously.

So in fact, Juul contains less freebase nic (as a percentage of the total nic content) than most vapes do.

idk about that, we were making nic salts at least six years ago when adding Lorann's Tart and Sour to our diy (we just didn't know we were) :D

They say they care about kids so why not worry about action sports where there is no helmet used like skateboards. (It's a lot harder to get a girl friend if you drool.) What about alcohol and childhood obesity? Notice it's not parents who are raising ecig issues. They are the ones who should decide about ecigs off school grounds.

I agree that for a non-nic user, 50 mg/ml nic salts will probably alter one's consciousness in some way, resulting in a mild nicotine buzz, possibly some nausea, but even with nic salts, it's really hard to vape oneself into a state of true danger, you are going to want to stop WAY before then....

I once overate nutmeg cookies in HS (at the right dose, it's psychoactive, and in a rather unpleasant way, I was pretty much confined to bed for three days). I learnt my lesson, but I don't think anyone went on the war cry against nutmeg. It was far more dangerous than the Juul, I'm fairly certain.

It really just is keeping up with the "hot topic teen self-harm" rotation... Which changes all the time. Right now it's the Juul. Later it will be something else. I still think the Juul is a better choice than cigarettes, however.

Also, there are plenty of folks who started smoking in middle school. My husband was 8, for example. I don't think tobacco should be outlawed either.

ETA: If we outlawed every dumb thing teens did, we'd all be in prison, or at least out on "good behavior" with an ankle monitor. KWIM?

They will just put up another sign at school that says "Juul Free Zone". Like the OTHER signs are really working.

I am convinced that Facebook is an idiot magnet. If you want to scare the hell out of the greatest number of stupid people with the least amount of effort, a Facebook post is your best bet.

As the old saying goes, a lie can travel halfway round the world before the truth even gets its boots on.
