*Sigh* No offense intended, not trying to be a pain, etc. etc, but this is certainly not the first time this subject has been brought up, and sad to say won't be the last. It comes up at least every 3 months, always with the same answer. E-cigs were invented 13 years ago by a man in China whose father had lung cancer and he named it the e-cigarette. It was marketed and then patented as such. Not to mention, most of us probably wouldn't have found them if they had been known by another name. Even if we could change the name, which isn't very likely at this stage of the game given the amount of information and advertising floating around out there, our opponents would still continue to call them e-cigarettes when they bad mouth them and it's just easier to prove them wrong when it doesn't sound like we're comparing apples to oranges.

Personally, I feel that by trying to change the name (vaporizer was already in use by another subset of "smokers" before e-cigarettes were made popular) we're acting like we're ashamed of them. I for one am a proud e-cigarette user and like telling people that I haven't smoked in 3 years because of them. Cell phone users didn't suddenly decide to call their phones wireless communication devices when their safety and propriety was first questioned.

Totally agree, in the year since I joined ECF this horse has been beaten, kicked, stabbed and stomped on. Who really gives a @$### what you call it. Call it what you want, just don't call me out for using it ....... ;-)~

First and foremost, e-cigs save lives. If we were to rename them, they would be less likely to reach the people who need to learn about them.

Secondly, it's the "electronic cigarette" that we're trying to defend. That's what they call them, so calling them anything else just muddies the waters.

ETA: That doesn't mean that we ALWAYS have to call them e-cigs. I call mine: my e-cig, my box mod, my Lambo, . . . . And, when I want to be left alone to vape in public, I may even call it my Nicotine Inhaler. And, occasionally even my pacifier or binky.

From day one I've been calling it an Ecig. Occasionally will type the abbreviation "PV" but I find it much easier to use Ecig when speaking to potential converts- they're more comfortable with that term and have stated such.
My own thoughts...I'm not that much different from any smoker except my choice is "hopefully" a healthier one. Just like smokers I still need my nicotine fix and that's ok. Also, for myself, the name Ecig is a GREAT "remember when"...some here will understand where I'm coming from.
As far as a crusade to change the name...choose whatever tag you want as long as it helps you along in your journey

I tend to agree with the OP. I've wondered about the negative connotations of "cigarette" in the name, even though there's an "e" in front of it. With society's current view on smoking, the mere mention of "cigarette" anything throws people into a panic. Especially among the uninformed masses.

I know from reading previous posts that this topic has some miles on it but perhaps it has some merit. Just think of all the "political correctness" that we've been subjected to by advertisers, corporations, the media, etc. These groups and others change names or designations left and right for whatever reason. Whether it be public opinion or perception, marketing, sales, or just somebody had an idea.

When you walk into a car dealer today you won't see "used" cars, now it's "pre-owned". Apparently the word "used" has negative implications.

I don't know, but moving away from the stigma associated with cigarettes, which is deeply ingrained, seems like it would be a step in the right direction towards alleviating people's alarm and confusion when first introduced to PV's(notice the designation?). :p

Personal Electronic Nicotine Inhaler System You can do the acronym.

Funny... But sorry, no way.

At home I call it my pouf stick. I puff on my pouf stick.

And whats up with the word 'personal' as in PV. Why is it not just a vaporizer? It hits me odd as in saying, "this is my personal toothbrush"

Subjects will come up again and again. Its the nature of forum life. Every so often we get a crop of new members. Its new to them. Dont bug me none.

I think it is a Tad Late to try to put the Toothpaste back in the Tube.

Unfortunately you are correct. But I still use the term personal vaporizer when talking to the uninformed to try and put some distance in their minds about vaping vs smoking. If they seemed confused, I will tell them they are also known as e-cigs but that it is a poor term to describe what they are.

Electronic cigarette equates into people actually trying them, they assume it will be similar to the analogs they are currently addicted to.
It is better for the community branded this way. If you disassociate the name, you will have a lot less people willing to give them a try.

When I first started out, it's the name and look that caught my attenion. I doubt I would of picked up something by a name I couldn't familiarize myself with or if it looked different from the generic cigarette.

Good point. How about, "Its a vaporizer. It is something like an electronic cigarette. People use them to quit smoking." I am practising that line for when I have to go to my family reunion this summer. i am sure they will all be happy that I have stopped smoking any way.

It can be whatever you want to call it or how you want to explain it. For marketing purposes and bringing more people into vaping, Ecig is the best name for it.
