It's a direct current being turned on and off. The 33Hz mods have a cycle peak of 6 volts no matter what the voltage setting of the device. The duty cycles are changed so the V-RMS (voltage-root mean square) is calculated to equal the mod's voltage setting. That's why people perceive these devices as firing hotter than say, the Provari. That's because in essence it's true, in that it is always firing at 6 volts, just at different cycles.

There is a whole lot of things that run on PWM. Not sure of all the ramifications, but I believe it is designed to minimize power loss. Not so sure it is the best thing for e-cigging unless you do it the Provari way and jack up the Hz. But it costs $$. Nice info X.

Interesting. I mean, I enjoy airy draws, but the plastic/wick taste can get in the way. I guess maybe it's a trade off. I'll have to do some experimentation. Thx!

Sometimes if you take apart your clearo when they are brand new and put a drop of juice on the coil and burn it in, it helps to take care of the wick taste. It's worth trying.

My guess is it has something to do with battery safety. Boosting a 3.7v battery to draw higher amps is tough on it. A battery is rated for both pulse and sustained amp draw (C-rating). Even though AW IMR are rated to sustain something like 10 amps of sustained draw, these devises aren't necessarily designed to use just AW batteries. They need to accommodate all brands of high drain batteries, many of which have a lower C-rating. The PWM increases the tolerance of the battery, so 3 amps drain in PWM is actually less demanding than 3 amps of continuous DC drain. And, yes, it would increase the battery charge life as well. I really don't like the 33.3Hz thing. I wreaks havoc on genesis coils, plus I can't stand the "rattlesnake" noise it gives with certain cartos/tanks. I'll bet we see a change in these things in the coming year.

Well, one of my Vamos seems to have died an untimely death (my fav, a black chrome with a nice wrap :( ). Maybe 3 months and one drop - dead. I may take it apart and see what happened. Anyway, fortuitously, I have a mech mod coming tomorrow, and an AGA-T2 that I need to mod a little for a bigger wick. I'm thinking of drilling the wick hole to 7/64 or even 1/8. I have 28 gauge kanthal wire. I have a torch. Thoughts, advice are appreciated :)

No advice, you're way beyond me, but my prayers are with you. Be careful! :)

Read above Ice. X provided some instruction on boring out the wick hole. Sorry about your VAMO. I'd like to know what went wrong too. I have a VAMO showing up tomorrow.

Don't ask me how, but I got it to work, sort of. For awhile there it would not even flash when you put the battery in, and I couldn't power it up. I kept futzing with it and it finally flashed, then wouldn't power up with 5 clicks. I kept at it, and it finally powered up. Now the fire button works only intermittently. The display works fine - watts, voltage, ohms, etc. I just picked it up and got a perfect hit off it. Weird. I bet it dies again. It's funny; when I first got this one, half the display wouldn't light up - intermittently. After a period of time, it fixed itself and has been fine ever since. Maybe this will fix itself too lol!

I wonder if some juice worked itself into the guts. But then it was acting funny when you first got it. Yep, sounds like something is loose.

So, new equipment since last I assessed my recent vapemail...

smoktech_natural_mod_.jpg

First off, the SmokTech Natural. I had high hopes for this mechanical. It's sleek, not too big, and has a big, comfortable button with a handy locking ring for the pocket. However, after previous experiences with SmokTech mods (particularly the horrid abomination that was the V1 Telescope) I kept myself from getting too excited before it showed up.

SmokTech did not disappoint me. Well, actually, they did, but I was expecting disappointment, so it wasn't really disappointment, was it? Anyway, yes, it's a fairly nicely-built mod for a low-priced mechanical... certainly more solid-feeling then the KTS (aka Chi Chi) I got a week or two before. I'd also picked up an optional 18500 tube, and found that all my batteries fit snugly with no rattle or contact issues. The button fires when asked to. Everything seemed great... until I started trying to screw atty's onto it, at which point I started having Telescope flashbacks. Just like with the Telescope, I found that a good half of my atty's just will not screw down onto the 510 connector. Those that won't screw down, in fact, include all the same ones I couldn't use on my Telescope because of its awful threading. I've never had this issue on any of my other PVs, but here it was again on my second SmokTech product, and it's a major problem. I think I could have really liked the Natural, but if I can never be sure whether an atty will be usable on it or not, it's just not something I'm going to want to deal with. If you're not the type to switch atomizers often, and have one that fits, great, you're in good shape, and you may even like it. If, like me, you're a compulsive atty-switcher, stay away from the Natural. Far, far away.

One of those atomizers that does fit: The Drunker Tank. This tank was named, no doubt, by its resemblance to a beer bottle. It's a relatively simple, but very effective setup: Four wicks feed up to a coil in the neck of the "bottle." The coil is rebuildable, so the resistance of the coil is completely up to the user, though the tank comes with a pre-made wick-and-coil assembly so it's ready-to-vape as soon as it arrives.

The beauty of this tank is that it's really easy to fill. You screw the top off, pour in your juice, and screw it back on. No dripping, no syringes, and a big wide mouth. I've had no dry hits or flooding at all with this tank, and the vapor production has been very good. Also, it's cheap. I've seen them for around $15 retail, with spare coil assemblies running about $3, if you don't feel like rebuilding them yourself.

Last, but not least, the Killer 705 atomizer. This tiny rebuildable is designed to go into a tank. In my case, I'm using it in my GG UFS on top of a GGTS mechanical, though it'll work in the cheapest carto tank if you feel like sticking it in one. I absolutely love the thing. It's very solidly-built. The wick and coil are rebuildable, which has allowed my to set this baby up to hit exactly the way I want it to. Coupled with the UFS, it's like having a dripper that lasts all day. I just feed it a little juice once in a while by twisting the UFS head, and the flavor is just amazing. I may pick up more of these just to have an excuse to use some of the carto tanks that have been collecting dust since I discovered rebuildables.

Oh, and my replacement eVic showed up, packed along with the remains of the first one I had ordered, which died in under a month. The vendor (props to Eric at Quantum Vapor, who has a way of making you feel like you're the most important customer in the world, even as he's telling you your eVic has passed on), did an awesome job of trying to revive it, but alas, it was an ex-PV. I'm hoping this one lasts a little longer than the first one did.

I just got a Natural as well. Nice deal from Exhale Vapors. Got it to use with my AGA-T+, which fits fine (with a bit of a gap due to the raised female 510 connection. I'm told you can file that down, along with the center pin, to achieve a no-gap fit. Then of course, you can't use a bottom breathing atty like a full size Nova. I can't wait to get a low res coil going on this. Oh, and the button is a bit stiff, but for the price, this looks like a pretty good device for me. Pleased so far. If I can ever get the Genny thing down....

Beginner's luck. I had made a wick for my AGA-T+ and coiled it with 32 kanthal. No good on the vamo. Hot spot city, horrible taste. So, I decided to try an 28 gauge coil and fire it on the Natural. 4/3 wrap. My meter is wonky so I have no clue the ohms, but it has to be low. Vapes like a steam engine. Wow.

Where did you pick up The Killer? I was looking at those a while back when they were being developed and forgot about them. I would love a couple for my nice tanks.

I got mine from GreekVapes (KILLER 705). Shipping took a couple weeks, but they were the only place that had them in stock at the time (and they're in stock there again now -- just checked). I've looked at House of Mods as well, but never caught them in stock.

Just received my VAMO. This is one of the more intriguing pieces of e-gear I have tried. This is a surprisingly well-built PV. Not as nice as Ida to be sure, but far better than I was expecting and sturdier than my LTs. It has some heft to it. The LED readout is crystal clear and the buttons all feel robust. Only problem is, the left button doesn't work. This poor guy (Tom) at Tropical Vapors is so embarrassed because the LT he sold me didn't work right either. I told him it wasn't his fault. He didn't make the PV. He's in Mexico till next week and he said he will personally test the next VAMO before he sends it out to be sure it is functioning properly. That's good enough for me. And I still highly recommend Tropical Vapors as Tom is standing squarely behind what he ships. Can't wait to get my replacement VAMO as this thing is quite impressive for a $52 PV.
