I am the Same way.

I started with a Cart n' Atty, an RN4081. But Atty's back in late 2009 were Finicky. And all the Hoops to re-stuff them with Fluval or Pyramid Tea Bags or SS Steel Wool was a Test of Patience. Not to mention Carts that held 7 or so Drops of e-liquids.

Cartos didn't give quite as Good of a hit as a Well Hitting Atty, but they were Dependable. And gave me the Confidence that I could Depend on my e-Cigarette when I left the House. Something that was one of the Last Pieces of the Puzzle to Quitting Smoking for me.

I still have some old cartos around in a box. I started with a Joye 510 and then the eGo. Carto vaping was a natural progression once I bought a Provari. It was a pretty good vape until I began to explore tanks. The ability to fill a tank and go half a day was enticing.

You punch a hole in a carto before you put it inside a carto tank, so the juice can get from the tank into the carto. You can also buy cartos with holes pre-punched.

.

I vaped them screwed directly onto my Provari. Filling was done with a small prescription bottle half full of juice. I'd put juice in the bottle, insert the carto, and wait for wicking to saturate the cotton. Wipe it off and vape. That was early 2011. Once I tried Kayfuns I was sold on tank atomizers.

I got turned on to carto tanks pretty quick when Jason (Electronicstix) started making them (2011).
And, I still use them!! They were a great vape in 2011 (except for pealing off the black wrappers), so why wouldn't they be a great vape in 2020?!?

Personal opinion of course, but vaping never has gotten better .... it has just gotten different.
    A lot easier too.

The AW, one of the many useless things I bought in the, once, endless quest for the best vape possible. I spent some time as a gullible budding vaper listening to too many people. I finally quit listening when I saw this:

"The biggest and most common mistake is buying product after product searching for that perfect vape
instead of learning how to get that perfect vape from the products you already have."

A lesson I also had to learn. I stopped listening to arm chair experts fairly early on, but it probably took me longer than most to stop buying because I liked playing around with new things. Because of that my list of vaping junk is very long.

Russ did way more good than not with his videos IMO, especially when helping folks new to vaping even though they started to turn more into what many vaping reviewers videos were really about. He was a regular on the Reo forum before Robert shut it down in March 2016, so I got to know him the years prior on the forum, when we talked on the phone and did some business together.

You bought yours for pocket change compared to what I got soaked for one shipped off of eBay in very early February 2014. $18

Proof that this is true in my case this time...

I still have some sealed cartos in my backup stock. Maybe they'll come in handy one day.

I can Envision a Day when my Eyes or my Fine Motors Skills might diminished to the point where a RTA might be too hard to rebuild.

Repetitive actions enhance motor skills. Winding 28ga SS wire around a mandrel is still working for me. I keep it on the mandrel after winding and then move to the atty and wrap both ends around the screws and tighten. So far, at 69 I'm fine with the process. We'll see what happens at 79. :)

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have the same worry, which is why I'm trying not to use any drop-in coils from my stash and trying to stick strictly with rebuildables while I still can build and wick them easily. Legal blindness runs in my family.

Well at 75 my coil building is still pretty good. One concession to age and a less steady hand has been to move to 'clamp' type atomizers such as Entheon or Wasp Nano. These seen easier to build for me, they eliminate the need to wrap the wire around a screw. I just fit the wire under the clamp or the set screw and off I go, vaping like the old fool that I am.

I'm still relying on Kayfun V2's (the original). For MTL they just work for my vaping style. I have a bunch of newer atties that I also enjoy and most of those are equipped with expansion tanks, but KFv2 is what I use on a daily basis.

That's why I prefer the Kayfun 5 and Subtank Mini RBA type of mounting system. It's almost impossible mess up unless your wire is too thick.

But unfortunately this and similar mounting systems are only a small part of my rebuildables stash. I'd say maybe 25% max.
