Hey guys,
so I'm using 3.5mm wick.. for the most part it works ok. My only problem is that the part where my silver wire attaches to my nichrome wire always ends up under my wick in the channels, and it seems to bulge the wick out, causing some fraying when I screw the ring and mouthpiece on.
I don't think it really affects the wicking much, I'm not really having any issues in that department.. I'm just looking to tidy up my builds.

Do you guys have a better way to attach the wires? Right now I twist the ends then wrap the silver wire over the twist. I saw some people using these little pieces of metal that pinch them together - are they any less bulky?

Alternatively, is there a better way to make sure the wire connections DON'T end up in the wick channels? Maybe if I make my coils tighter together, the wire connections would be in the ceramic cup maybe?

I hope I'm explaining myself well enough! Any suggestions would be great, thanks!

Tell me about it. Every time I make a wick I start fiddling around with the wires so I don't end up doing the same. Here is how it goes with me. When I'm using kanthal 32 or 33 I tend to cram the connections inside the ceramic. But when I use nichrome 32, since it is longer for same resistance its a bit harder, so I try to have the connections on the top of the wick at the edges. But them you have to make sure they don't touch the mouthpiece when closed all the way. I ordered some beads to try the other way, still waiting the shipment to reach.

Oh duh... you're right I can try to wrap the connections around the wick as well.. For some reason I was just used to only putting coils around wicks so I guess I had a brain-fart on that one!
I think I also need to wrap my coils closer together. It doesn't matter if the coils touch each other, right? I'm still getting used to non-SS wicks so bear with me :)

Coils should never touch!

best way is narrowing your junction point ans also just a heads up Silver can easily break.

Yeah one thing I also seem to do is pull the nichrome out of the silver when wrapping coils, so I sometimes bend the tip of the nichrome over the twisted silver if you can picture that. I might try those little wire clasps, but they don't seem much smaller? Where can I find those anyway?

I think what you're referring to are sterling silver crimp beads, which you can find in the jewelry-making section of craft stores like Hobby Lobby and Michaels. Look for the 1mm size ... also look for the little crimp pliers; attaching these correctly is a two-step crimp, and the little pliers have a special groove to make these crimps.

Excellent, I'm headed there this weekend anyway, I will look for them! Do you have experience with them? Just wondering if it's better than twisting wires. I'm sure it's probably quicker and easier at least!

make coils close without touching each other and make small connections like 2-3mm long sub:)

Thanks imeo. I think I just need to work on making better connections :p
My main problem is that after I twist the wires together, I then wrap the silver around the twist.. but then I go to wrap my coil and the kanthal wire pulls out from the silver wire! The silver wire is so much softer than the 32 gauge kanthal that the wires don't twist around each other, the silver only twists around the kanthal.. Not sure how to get around that?

They can be fiddly, but they do work and they make about as small a junction as a good, tight manual twist. I had good results with them, but now that I've finally learned how to do good junctions manually I don't use them any more. Some folks swear by them though, others just swear at them ...

After joining the NR wires to the R wire, I torch the R wire. This removes wire coating that may affect flavor and also melt the NR a little to fuse twisted connections.

Yes specially with silver ..you can take the lighter and heat the connection part red hot 2/3 times ...you will get a much better connection
