Meet Me in St Louie Louie
Hola .. :)

I guess it's been about a year and a half ago, when I had a new roof on the house installed .. last Spring (what little Spring there was) .. I noticed my gutters were overflowing when a big rain would come .. so, I laddered up there and discovered that the Roofing Company had not replaced the leaf guards, thusly, I spent the rest of that day mucking out the gutters .. called the Owner of the roofing co. and got "Oh, man, I know I mentioned that to you when I bid on the job .. that you'd need new gutter guards after we got thru cause we had to tear out the old ones .. " .. well, no Dude, I sure don't remember that .. basically, in a case like this, unless the Homeowner catches it while the job is near completion and before paying and raises some cane, you end up SOL ..

So, with whatever Autumn might or might not be, leaves are gonna fall .. I spent yesterday installing these 3 foot section gutter guards from Lowe's and it was up the ladder, down the ladder, up the ladder, down the ladder pretty much for 6 or 7 hours .. after I finally settled into the recliner around 6 PM, I rested for a while and then got up to hit the can, my legs almost did not cooperate ..

Now, I called for some bids on a Company doing the job, and it was averaging around $1500 clams .. the one's I bought at Lowe's cost me $150/ Tax and all .. and a couple days of soreness .. o_O

I guess it was great exercise, but geeze ..

Good morning Bea and Rose.

Been an interesting morning. We had a very scruffy cat show up the other day wanting to come in our house. Our cats immediately nixed that idea. The poor thing looked very weak and skinny. No replies from the nextdoor site when I asked who owned this cat. I later saw it sleeping under the front bushes, actually thought it was dead. He looked so sad that I put out food and water and he seemed to like that. If I take it to the SPCA I'm sure they'll put it down so I'm not sure what to do. For some reason I woke up at 4:00 a.m. today and decided to just come downstairs. There was some robust meowing going on so I made my coffee and settled in to read in the front room so Sorry Cat wouldn't see me. 2 hours later I came into the family room and the meowing was coming from our laundry room!! Turns out one of our girls got locked in there last night! I don't see Sorry Cat anywhere.

Morning all.

Fall has fell around here. About 55 when I got up, heading for 65 today, then lower all week, with scattered rain. Snow level down to 4500' by the weekend (no issue for us, at about 500'), a bit early in the season to be that low.

Today . . . Lovely 84* - 0% Humidity . . . With 3 ( not 1 - but 3) Hurricanes (a couple still forming out there) to watch out for . . . "Jerry" - Passing by and moving away from land ( ? ) . . . "Karen" - Unknown and hoping only a "Tropical Storm" (for now) passing over PR and may hopefully "fizzle out", but who really knows at this point . . . And - Then there is "Lorenzo" . . .

Can't wait until November gets here - but then again although they are considered rare, there have been a couple of hurricanes that have come even though the hurricane season is supposed to be over by then . . .

I've written about Amtrak in the past .. waxing nostalgic on the "City of New Orleans", which I have taken to New Orleans more than once .. I always liked Train Travel .. you had what was really a self contained Community, and, back in the old days, there was a Smoking Lounge (I don't know if it should be called a Lounge, as it was more like being inside a giant ashtray) .. but, if you were a smoker, you'd see the same folks there when you decided to light up, you'd likely have more than one cig while there, and, I would always, always, strike up a conversation with those folks .. over an 18-20 hour train trip, you'd get to know these Temporary Friends pretty well ..

A guilty pleasure, for me, would be the dining car .. where food was prepared in a small kitchen in that car .. if you were alone or with one person, you'd always get seated with another stranger or two, thus, unless you wanted to be really rude, you'd strike up a conversation as well while breaking bread with these folks .. the commonality within this "Train Community" was, er, we were all on a train and as long as it was moving, we were not getting off ..

The dining car would have white tablecloths, a small lamp, and, oddly, somehow gave you an idea of what it must be like on the Orient Express .. the rails clacking, passing Mississippi Delta towns like Yazoo City, Jackson and more .. it was quite Romantic .. harkening back to another Age, at least IMO ..

Now, Amtrak is eliminating the Dining Car as I knew it, sadly .. to go more "Airline" style, with prepared food .. purportedly, because the newer Generations are simply not interested in this type communal activity and to cut costs ..

Another Slice of Americana swirls down the drain of History ..

My brother used to work for Amtrak. One of his jobs was to clear out and "throw away" every bit of food left when the trains stopped in New Orleans. That meant even food sealed and frozen. We always had a ton of juice, butter and cookies. He let the other guys have the rest as they needed it more. No wonder Amtrak lost money!

I have always loved riding trains. So sad to see them change/go out of style.

I don't think there is any other form of transport that is as Romantic .. here we have Riverboats that ply the Mississippi and, if you close your eyes, you can feel what it must have been like when the Riverboat was the primary mode of people and merchandise transport, for that brief period of time before the rails ..

Yet, you can walk out to the Deck and instead of folks soaking in the experience, they are on their Phones .. because, hey, checking your stuff and staying connected is so much more important than sheer bliss ..

I don't remember ever riding on a riverboat but I probably did as a child. I agree about the people on their phones, they can't even put them down to eat lunch.

Janet if this cat is in such bad shape it may be sick. I don't know how your local shelter operates from from all my years in the business I know most of them only euthanize right of the bat if the animal is gravely injured, aggressive or if the shelter is really full. Otherwise they examine the snimal to see if it can be saved and possibly adopted out. If it shows up again call the shelter and ask about their policy.

And honestly…and this may sound harsh and for that I apologize…but there are worse fates than death for these animals. For instance starving to desth or slowly dying from a disease. At the vet hospital where I worked clients sometimes brought in strays and the suffering of these animals was awful.

At least death in most shelters comes from a needle and as much as we all hate it it is often the kindest thing to do.

I'll say this .. personally, I think the USA has a pet crisis .. now, that's just my opinion but it just seems to me that pets, for one reason or another, end up on the street .. sure, some wander from home, but I think some of that is even the fault of the so-called owner that's not paying attention .. or people get pets and then decide they don't want them .. cute little Fido the Puppy grows up, etc ..

Then, I don't know how it is anywhere else, but in Missouri, absolute horror stories would hit the 6 O'clock News about these Puppy Mills that churned out in-bred "AKC" registered dogs ..

And don't even get me started on the News Stories about "Well meaning woman discovered with 75 starving cats wandering thru her home .. and another 20 that had died .. " ..

The Animal Control folks in my area refuse to even deal with anything but a stray dog or cat .. stating that they are overwhelmed with just those .. years ago, they would pick up a caught possum / .... / etc .. not any more ..

Yep, you're right and I totally agree, but I have GREAT NEWS! While eating dinner the doorbell rang and when I opened the door there was a young guy standing there holding Sorry Cat!! His neighbor showed him the picture I'd posted - it was his cat! He's been looking for him for 3 days - that's how long he's been here. His name is Scraps and he's 21 years old! He has no idea how he got all the way up here, maybe he got scared or something. He moves as slow as a sloth though. The guy was so grateful he actually started to cry. So did I because I was so afraid someone dumped the cat because it was so old. So the Nextdoor site saved the day. He wasn't on it, but his neighbor was and now I know 2 of our neighbors that we've never met. Happy Day!!
