LOL...fan art is tricky...;) I wouldn't want Tim Burton's lawyers knocking on my door for copyright infringement...

Yeah, I suspected that's what you'd say .. :) .. while I don't think Tim Burton's Legal Team will come and grind your bones to dust, to me, the real answer is :: Reproductions of existing characters are generally not what would be considered "Art" .. and, many Artists consider that type of work somehow cheapening "Art" itself .. so, if you feature yourself as an Artist, you must remain true to the intent, no .. ?? A one-of sweat shirt is fun, you may wear it once and never again or you may wear it everyday .. but, your imagination did not play a huge role in the sweat shirt .. (BTW, it's a cool shirt, not my apparel cup 'o tea, but I like it .. :))

Sometimes, someone will say to me "You're an Artist" .. well, no, I'm not .. Leo Fender and Les Paul were artists in creating something .. I adapt, I tweak, I embellish and in most cases, I make a superior product compared to something off the shelf .. but there is no real artistry involved .. it's just the work of a Tradesman .. nothing more, nothing less ..

Now, as a follow up ..

The "Christmas Train" you posted spoke to me .. the first thing I thought of was Patrick (2leggs) .. it caused me think about him and his Journey ..

That, and the days of when the iron rails would transport folks to their Christmas destinations .. :)

You know me pretty well...:) I've still so much to learn, so that I can be able to take what I visualize in my mind and bring it to life on a canvas. The shirt was quick, easy and would be commercially viable, but something that was only done as a one time need for my circumstances.

I have to disagree with your personal assessment that you're not an artist. You are a master craftsman when you create an instrument, but you're also an artist... I've seen your art ...

Warning! Long post...

I came from a little RR town in Montana....the sound of an engine's whistle blowing in the distance at night has always sounded a little lonely to me, while at the same time is comforting.

I too thought of Patrick, my Father, and both Grandfathers, as I worked on that painting. So many memories and thoughts were evoked.

My paternal Grandfather was disabled and lost an eye in a RR accident. My Father spent his whole working life with the RR, the same one that Patrick worked for. It seems that my family has been connected to the RR in one way or another for generations. My Granddaughter's Father is an engineer and she is soon to be engaged, he already has the ring, to a fellow who is a train dispatcher.

While I may eventually do commissions, I already know that my best work will be done when I am emotionally drawn to the subject matter...and...If a painting speaks to a viewer, that is the best complement I could ever hope for...:)

Yesterday, I spent the better part of the Sunny and Warm 60o day doing yard cleanup, mulching and bagging leaves and debris .. got the final leaf fall of the Season cleaned up .. yaaa ..

Settled in after having some grub and watched the FX Movie "A Christmas Carol" .. now, this 3 hour and 45 minute movie (with commercials) is really, really a very dark take on Dickens .. not going to be everyone's thing, IOW .. it's got some "language", it's just a dark tale, bordering on Horror and sometimes not just bordering ..

That said, it's pretty good stuff .. I have been a Fan of many of the various TV movies / Films over the years, I always particularly liked the George C. Scott version from the 1980's .. "Scrooged" with Bill Murray was good, it's a long list ..

At any rate, if you are in the mood for a completely different re-telling of the Classic ::

Um, no red x, but I also disagree. A tradesman would make a functional guitar. Yours are that, of course, and also art works.
