Musing on a Friday Morning ©

I don't particularly know just why, but for a good portion of my Adult Life, I have had a deep seated love for the Eastern Seaboard / New England .. the History, the food, the architecture, the Historical Significance and more fascinated me even before I ever stepped a foot on the actual soil .. Over the years, I have had the pleasure to visit D.C., the Jersey Shore, Atlantic City, Cape May, Asbury Park .. New York City, Niagara Falls, the Finger Lakes, the Poconos and more .. and, I enjoyed it as much as any place I have ever been .. even the names still evoke a longing ..

Within a five mile stretch of the Jersey Shore, north of Cape May, there was/is an area known as the Wildwoods .. where tourists since the 1950's and earlier, during the warm months, stayed at exotically named places such as the Malibu, Sahara and Monaco .. places that we affectionately called Motels (getting to be more of a rarity these days, supplanted by Hotels) .. vacationing, as they say "Down the Shore" .. these exotically named places, which also included the Lollipop and the Jolly Roger, were candy colored structures inspired by Miami Beach and fantasy vacations these families could not afford .. yet gave them a reasonable facsimile and a reasonable price ..

Those that remain are the dreamy leftovers of a long gone era (if any remain at all) ..

Nostalgia that can be visited for a time and then left behind .. the shells of a memory .. still being wandered and populated by the untold number of Ghosts of happy families ..

Ah, the Jersey Shore. Twas a big part of my life. As kids, our family vacations each summer were a week in Atlantic City (way before anyone even thought of Casino's). My parents would rent an apartment complete with kitchen. I look back and laugh .. because my Mom didn't trust the pots, pans, and dishes provided so she'd bring her own. All day on the beach then stroll the boardwalk at night.

Visits to Steele Pier in Atlantic city was always a treat. They always had all the latest TV's, radios', kitchen appliances, etc. on display. Even for us kids it was fun. Oh, and yes there was the Steele Pier diving horse ... yes I did see that show live more than once.

(if ever an animal act should have been banned ... this one should have even sooner than it was).

This picture predates the years I was there as a kid ... but the building still looked the same.

Teenage years many day trips with a female companion or a ground of friends. Later years, pre-kids, we rent a place on Reed's Beach with other couples and spend most every weekend 'down the shore. Reeds beach was close to Stone Harbor, Avalon, the Wildwoods.

Janet and I and spent many summer vacations in Ocean city with our kids. Ocean City is billed as a family town ... not one bar or tavern or anyplace to even buy alcohol or beer. When we re-visited there a couple weeks ago, I mentioned that to Katie ... she was surprised that a Jersey Shore town could be as popular as Ocean City and be a 'dry' town.

Just a warm and heartfelt thanks to Mike, K and Yiddle for sharing those stories, memories .. :) ..

And, Mike .. the Steele Pier diving horse, although clearly a Bad Thing, at the same time, had to be quite a thrilling experience, especially as a Young Person .. if anything could get burned into your Brain, that would be one ..

Sounds like my background with family in AC also. Nice place in the 60's.Later, with kids, we also did a rental on Reeds Beach. Good times. Unfortunately we timed it with the blackflies migration northward and were stuck inside or drove to Stone Harbor for the day. Perfect sunsets each evening.

We stayed in a hotel in Brigantine for six weeks, courtesy of the casino I was relocating for, when I first arrived in NJ...the beach was infested with greenhead flies....an experience that led me to avoid the beaches there in the future. Those nasty little things actually take a chunk of flesh out of you when they bite!

A few days back, I got a PM from a guy that's been around ECF for a long time .. He asked me if I would email him a list of my favorite songs .. I scratched my head and thought, "Sheesh, I've got 14K songs on my phone, another 25K uncompressed on my Home Media Server, hundreds of CD's and vinyl that numbers likely over 1000, although I've never really counted them .. and, although I was flattered to have been asked, I don't really keep an actual list .. :)

What I post here and the many, many songs I've posted in the past, are a general reflection of what I'm listening to within that slice of time, and, it changes constantly based on my mood .. my digital content is indexed like :: "Country Rock" / "Slow Dance" / "Classic 1950's" / "Modern Pop" / etc etc etc ..

So, all I can say, P, is keep an eye and ear out, because anything I post song wise, is something I like .. you may have heard it before, you may have not .. and, if you have not, check what other material is out there (that's assuming you like what you heard .. :)) .. at any rate, let me throw out a few for today ::

Del Amitri :: Vastly Underappreciated Scottish Band

Wanda Jackson :: The Queen of Rockabilly

The Shelters :: coincidentally, the first Band Tom Petty produced, Byrds/Beatles Rock at it's best

The Monkeys :: Yes, I know, but it's great stuff / From the LP "Good Times"

Wow.......so much to read and comment on!

Taking a small time out while daughter is cooking and sil is helping her.......Daddy is napping, and I'm here......pretty ideal, I must say.

Read a bit about the Jersey Shore.........oh, my!

Sea Isle City, Brigantine, and Somers Point along with TI.....'Townsends Inlet' were in my life from a baby in her mama's womb till about the age of 40. Family has had a home in SIC for 90+ years now, so it's 'in the family'....Grandparents came over and bought that house for a pittance in today's world.......we would venture to Wildwood, but preferred AC and Ocean City. My uncle was the bass/cello player at the Ocean City Pier and would travel from SIC to O/C each night in his black tie and all gussied up. That was his summer job.....winter job was the New Orleans Sympony.

Oh, I could go on and on about the magic memories of that era! I'm just grateful that I can still remember them.....because remembering them puts a smile on my face with the tinge of nastalgia.
