Six months ago, a cousin living in Alaska found out that I live in this town, which is where his wife comes from. They visit yearly, and we hadn't seen each other in 50 years. He called yesterday, and they are in town. He wanted to meet with me, so I chose a Chinese restaurant that is usually quiet (I have a hearing loss). We talked for an hour and a half, exchanging information about family history and memories from childhood.
His in-laws and I go to the same church; I looked her up in the parish directory, and I recognized her face. They must have exchanged information about me, and cousin and I talked about some of his siblings. He agrees with my perceptions, and understood me better from community perceptions.
I learned that one of our ancestors is mentioned in "Island in the Middle of the World" about the early days of New Amsterdam. Eager to read the book.
A good day!
Good morning to the young at heart![]()
Today was rough. Drove all day mostly through pouring rain. DH drove most of the time because I just couldn't help much. Made it from Huron, OH to Chattanooga, TN. 8 hrs to home tomorrow and hopefully no rain!
I cherish my relationship with my son. He knows he can talk to me about anything, and we have. Now he forgets to tell me important stuff going on (still ADHD) but his dear wife keeps us in the loop. He is concerned about my injury (the big strong Mommy showing weakness) but I assure him I will survive and conquer!
So many parents now days miss the joys of parenthood (JMHO).
Wow.......so much to read and comment on!
Taking a small time out while daughter is cooking and sil is helping her.......Daddy is napping, and I'm here......pretty ideal, I must say.
Read a bit about the Jersey Shore.........oh, my!
Sea Isle City, Brigantine, and Somers Point along with TI.....'Townsends Inlet' were in my life from a baby in her mama's womb till about the age of 40. Family has had a home in SIC for 90+ years now, so it's 'in the family'....Grandparents came over and bought that house for a pittance in today's world.......we would venture to Wildwood, but preferred AC and Ocean City. My uncle was the bass/cello player at the Ocean City Pier and would travel from SIC to O/C each night in his black tie and all gussied up. That was his summer job.....winter job was the New Orleans Sympony.
Oh, I could go on and on about the magic memories of that era! I'm just grateful that I can still remember them.....because remembering them puts a smile on my face with the tinge of nastalgia.
I went to bed very, very late the other night. It was already late when my oldest grandson stopped in my doorway to talk. We talked for over 3 hours!
Our talk started out with him telling me how none of his friends remembered some show he watched as a kid, Dragon Flyz. I googled it. It only lasted about 9 months. No wonder no one remembers it.
We talked all about the history of anime for an hour then wandered into other territories. The last hour was about politics, mis-information/dishonesty/sensationalism from media, and how fanatical people can be about their crazy ideas. And lots of stuff in between.
My grandson is 17 years old. I'm really going to miss him when he moves out. He sticks his head in my doorway regularly. Sometimes he just acts silly. Sometimes he'll just mention some little bit of trivia he's learned. Sometimes he'll talk for hours.
Still awake, ....shall I share my most pervasive earworm with you all?...![]()
You've just taken me down memory lane....to when my Father made me a crystal radio...most likely because I had been begging for a transistor radio...Gloomy and cloudy this AM in Fly Over Country .. the last shreds of Summer continue to cling .. mid to high 80's still predicted with a little break here and there .. I'll be glad when Fall finally makes it's appearance ..
Memories of My Transistor Radio ©
In the latter part of the 1950's, as I was Coming of Age, my Parents gifted me a Transistor Radio .. possibly paid for by Green Stamps or Raleigh Cigarette Coupons (if anyone remembers those ..) .. at any rate no small feat back in those days, as these things were not cheap .. it was, I'm pretty sure, of Japanese origin .. it had a beige colored plastic mono earpiece that came with it and a leather case .. it was touted as being pocketable, but you'd need a pretty good size pocket ..
I had always been a Reader, sequestering a flashlight under my bed as a Child and clandestinely reading under the covers after official Bedtime .... when I got the Radio, it did not take long to substitute that , and, I did not need a flashlight ..
With that ancient earpiece in place, I would slowly dial the "tuner" .. and, when the weather was right, I could hear far away stations .. later in life, learning it was signal bounce that caused this phenomenon, yet, at the time, feeling it was a miraculous thing .. sometimes, it would pick up some exotic sounding transmission from a Whole 'Nother Country.. mainly, though, it was WGN out of Chicago and, if I was really, really lucky, WIBG "Wibbage" out of Philly that I tried to lock into .. sometimes fading in and out, but there, none the less ..
These days, we have a virtual overload of selection as it relates to Music, TV, etc ..
Back then, it was just an amazing thing for a very Young Man and provided a real sense of Wonder ..

Nope, never heard of the first 3 and never heard that Monkeys song. Always thought if I ever had a girl she would be named Magdalena, but Mike nixed it. Thought she'd get made fun of and be called Maggot. It was my grandmothers name. She was Hungarian and was called Mugda - ugh! Maybe Maggot wasn't so bad...
Hmm....now I have Rod Stewart and Maggie May swirling through my head...I think it's a very pretty and romantic name .... and, I would have used Maggie for short .. If I had ever had a Daughter, I would have lobbied for Aurora or Celeste

Very upsetting to watch.
