What is the suet recipe? I going to the store later for some birdseed so I might as well get what I need for suet.

Jerry

Year Round Suet

In a large bowl mix together:

2 C oatmeal
2 C corn meal
1 C flour

Melt 1 C of Crisco and 1 C peanut butter in a pan and stir into above mixture. Mix together well. Then you want to make cakes out of it. Use whatever container you want and refrigerate till solid. Then cut into cakes for your feeder.

I line a 9x11 pan with wax paper and let some extra hang over the sides (do not use plastic wrap!) and pour the suet into that to cool. Then just lift it out of the pan and cut) Also, sometimes I throw in 1 C of birdseed, but it's not really necessary. Birds like it either way.

Good morning everyone! I hope everyone has a good day today!

I spend a lot of time worrying lately. I hate doing it but can't stop. My parents are 88 years old and my DH and I both have heart disease. Everyone please stay safe!

It's hard not to worry, but just stay away from people, wash your hands well and stay home and you should be ok. Is there anybody nearby who could pick up supplies or Rx for you? I honestly think that very soon they're going to have an acceptable treatment plan that's going to be a total game changer for all of this. It'll get us through until we can get a vaccine. This too will calm down. Just use common sense now and remember that most people do recover even from this virus.

Meanwhile, we don't hear anything about the seasonal flu anymore. That can be fatal to anyone of any age and at much higher numbers than we've seen with the Wuhan virus and we seem to live with that without too much fear at all.

You can try coating the suet in hot pepper - ground or flakes. It should keep the squirrels away. They won't eat the pepper but it doesn't bother the birds. I never tried it with suet but it worked in my regular bird feeders.

I have to go out to get DH cigs. I may just send him alone next time and I have plenty of vape stuff for me. I have no one who can go out and get stuff for us. In a few days I'm going to try to order groceries. See if that helps. I'm going to suggest that to my parents. DH still wants to go out. I have to remind him we're supposed to stay in away from people. This is nerve wracking because I can't keep everyone safe.

Funny, I don't see him lining up at the euthanasia clinic...

Comments like his put a bad spin on things, IMO .. it hints at Older Folks being somehow expendable for the Greater Good .. that it is more important that Economic Activity continue .. which, in a sense, places an arbitrary value on Life, in this case, based on age ..

The main problem with that is (besides the obvious), at this point, we still don't really know how widespread the virus is .. that, and would the Litmus Test hold true for elderly Mothers / Fathers / and other Relatives .. ??

"Let's all get back to normal Life .. so what it some folks die .. ?? We have an Economy to think about .. " ..

These type of things always strike me as odd .. especially when they come from Those of Faith .. who ask, "What Would Jesus Do .. ??" .. well, I don't think Jesus would place the almighty Dollar ahead of Life itself .. (although, I'm not attempting to speak for Jesus, I'm just guessing) ..

Simply wrong on multiple levels ..

And it’s free. I found lots of them but the rest give a free period then you have to pay.

I went to Wally's and picked up some necessities. When I was walking in the cart attendant was gathering some carts and I noticed he had a large pump sprayer on his back and was spraying down all of the carts he had gathered. The store was not that crowded but the shelves were bare in spots. I got a bag of birdseed I was needing. There wasn't any cornmeal so I went over to the isle that has Hispanic foods and there was plenty of it over there.
When I got home I made a batch of the Bird Suet and have it cooling off in the fridge. I will go out in a bit to fill the feeder and check the size of the Suet holders on the side of the feeder. I was surprised at how easy it was to make the suet. I used the wax paper and I think it will cut up to size just fine. Thanks again for the recipe. I'm sure the birds will thank you too. ;)

My turn to share...;) @Janet H ...you once said you wanted to come back as a river otter...:) If I had my druthers....I'd come back as a GHO...

You'll have to click on "watch on Vimeo", but it's well worth it for the beauty of watching this...

I've watched this pair as well as the OKC nest for several seasons. It just plain makes me feel good to watch them.

Good morning :)

@Diver9543 glad you’re making the suet. It’s much healthier for the birds thsn store-bought and cheaper. One thing to remember. When it gets really hot, say 80 degrees or above suet can get rancid if not consumed in 2-3 days. Many people don’t put out it out in those hot days but if you cut it in smaller pieces that will be eaten faster the birds will thank you.

Good morning Bea, Yiddle and Nermal. Chilly and hazy morning here. We'll be busy later emptying and defrosting our fridge/freezer or the repair guy to come tomorrow. Right now it's working just fine, but no telling when it will clog up again.

Janet I usually make a triple batch. I’ve been using those plastic mushroom containers but I like your 9X11pan idea better!

That's a great idea. Don't know why I didn't think of doubling up sooner.

Speaking of birds, thought I'd insert a lil beauty! We need all we can get right now! :)

Beautiful, but don't you wonder how the parent doesn't impale the baby with that huge beak?

No worries about that here. Our suet usually is gone in under 2 hours between the squirrels and the starlings. Sometimes I'll put out a 2nd one when I see the smaller birds hanging around. Last winter I remember suet disappearing within an hour!

Oh, this morning when I put the suet out I saw a large fox running down the deer walk. Haven't seen one for quite awhile. Maybe that's why our groundhog population has dwindled. Even the squirrel population is down, but not nearly enough.

Do you know if they totally built that nest themselves? Looks like the larger pieces are the perfect shape. Beautiful photography. I thought this was going to be the young girl with the nest outside the window of their house.
