They say if you can remember those days, you were not there .. well, that's simply not true .. Let me say first, discounting the "Current Scenario" .. I'm fine with living in the Current Era .. however, if I were to be able to re-live an Era, I would, hands down, select the 1960's ..
I have so many fond memories of that time .. yes, there were bad things as well, which I'm not going to list or go into .. I watched 'Cool Hand Luke' last night for the I don't know how many times, it always spoke to me on various levels .. anti-establishment, rebellion, love, friendship, etc .. besides having such a great cast .. after I watched it, I spun up "Mrs. Robinson" ..
We eased into that Decade gently, confident that conservative values, traditional roles, and classic clothes still prevailed .. We were an affluent society, enjoying the fruits of a flourishing economy .. Yet our new young president, JFK, urged us to embrace self-sacrifice over selfishness, to work together to eliminate injustice and inequality .. He set the tone for change, but no one was prepared for the social upheaval that would ensue .. Our attitudes, behavior, mores, every assumption would be challenged .. The pendulum, which began to swing in the 1950's from the right, would move hard and fast to the left, revolutionizing American life ..
The idealized family continued to dominate television, "Ozzie & Harriet", "The Dick Van .... Show", "Bewitched" and more .. and, we had "Mission Impossible", "Laugh In", "Dragnet", "Route 66" .. etc .. Westerns still held some sway, with "Maverick" and others ..
This decade of turbulence and mayhem was the most exciting and most profound for me .. My memories of the 1960's are among my most precious memories .. I think this especially holds true if you share the values that emerged at the time .. These included challenging the status quo, even to the point of rebellion, experimentation with mind-altering substances and alternative spiritual paths and practices, sexual freedom, the ascendancy of youth, the quest of African Americans and Women for equal treatment, Gay Riots & Revolution such as Stonewall and earlier .. and an environment full of colorful and loud visual and auditory expressions ..
The mood of the 1960's would not last long .. yet, it became indelibly etched into the fabric of our Country .. It is a testimony to the remarkableness of the era that we are still listening to its music today ..
