We used to buy for everyone, then we each chose a name as a pollyanna. Now we choose a pollyanna, but instead of a gift we choose a charity we know that person would appreciate and reveal it on our Christmas gathering. We only have the 4 grandsons so we still buy for them though. If we go to visit family we'll take a bottle of wine and/or a plate of home made cookies. By the time our great grands come along we'll be in a nursing home if we're still around.
We also draw names for which kids we’re buying for.

Well - Always like the idea to give the person a card with whatever they wanted (reasonable of course - no houses or cars, etc.) on the holiday and then wait until the day after to actually get the gift when it went on sale for 50% - 80% Off . . . That way there is no disappointment when someone didn't get what they wanted - nor need for exchanges - nor returns . . . Just Sayin' . . . ;)

I maintain a habit every year when the weather is still tolerable, where, in the evening I'll sit out on the deck, have a vape and a beverage and watch my pair of Hummingbirds hit the feeder in the back yard ..

In the mornings, since I have another feeder near the front windows, I'll have my coffee and a vape, in a quiet house with no TV on and watch them hit that feeder ..

It's likely, sometime last night or early this morning, they moved on to their Wintering area, wherever that may be .. since neither showed up .. another page turned in the unrelenting march toward Winter ..

    I'll miss them ..

We were out today so I wasn't paying attention during the day, but after dinner, from where I sit, I didn't notice any hummers coming to the feeders which is unusual. Wonder if ours have left too. It's funny, but they're very busy at the feeder for a time and then, poof! They're gone. When this happens I keep up with the feeders for a week or 2 in case there's any stragglers. 189 days until Spring. Just say'n.

Good morning. It was a lovely 55 degrees on the deck this morning. The sun is shining, the sky is blue and the darn starlings are tearing up the suet. They're keeping the squirrels away so I can't tell how they're handling the cayenne pepper I coated the suet with. I'll be making a new batch tomorrow and will mix the cayenne into it. The thing is, I think the cayenne is making the squirrels mad when they do get to it because they're chewing the heck out of the feeder. Ugh! Maybe i can figure out how to paint cayenne onto the feeder itself.

Haven't seen a single hummingbird at the feeders this morning. Yep, they probably packed their bags and left for the winter.

Morning, loungers. Smoke layer is keeping the temps down. I'd rather have higher temps and the west coast NOT burning down!!

I have yet to see any hummingbirds at my feeder this season. Syndee came in the other day and said that there was one that showed up while she was outside with my little dog, Koko. Of course, I immediately went out and made sure there was plenty of liquid in the feeder. The next day I actually saw one myself. So it hasn't been a waste of energy having the feeder out for the last two years. Now I hope they remember and come back in the spring.
The last couple of days have not been very good days/nights for me. Yesterday was Nancy's birthday and for some reason, her loss has really hit me hard. I've got projects set out at different stages and I just haven't even had the desire to go out and inhale any sawdust. I think I need some farm time and sight-in my new rifle. Poking holes in paper will usually get me in a better mood. My bud, Steven, has a stress fracture on his foot, and getting him out of his house might do him some good. His job would be to provide support and friendship.
I hope everyone has a good day and stay safe.

Yesterday, my Mom mom sent me pics of the flying Beauties eating.

On this feeder, only one is welcomed at the table, lol.

The most I had was six or seven. Now, maybe three or four. Said a little prayer for all of them to have a save journey so they will all return next year. I will miss them :(

I know, and I'm sure everyone here, has felt how you are feeling. Some days/nights are a struggle to get through. I'm so sorry, you are going through this, I know it's tough. I haven’t gone through a spouse dying, but my Dad (step dad but he is my dad) and a very close friend past away within 2 days of each other on Jan 19th and 21st of 2019, it was almost impossible to bare. Going out shooting always helps, and I hope it really helps you, and you will get some frustration/emotions out. Of course, have fun too :w00t:

So we've got another hurricane heading our way. Im tired of this. :(
Fortunately it is passing us by with a lot of rain (North/Central Florida, west of 75). Wishing you the best, these things are nothing to mess with. Winds, major problem, but even a Tropical Storm or Cat 1 is nothing to poo poo. Stay safe @Anise !

Good morning. The weather report says no rain today, but it sure looks like it's going to rain any minute.

The squirrels keep going to the suet feeder, but they must not be too happy with the suet I coated in cayenne. They're eating the feeder instead.

Yesterday, my Mom mom sent me pics of the flying Beauties eating.

Our hummers are very territorial and only let 1 feed at a time. There's 2 feeders so there's plenty for everyone. I've seen pictures of multiple birds at a time on feeders, how come not on mine? I didn't see any hummers at our feeders yesterday and so far none this morning so I guess they've left for winter destinations.

@Anise Be safe. Be prepared and keep listening to the weather reports! You may be used to this stuff happening, but you never know what might happen. Prayers to all of you in Sally's path.

    Good morning everyone!
We may have lucked out. It looks like Sally might miss us. Now comes decision time. Do we stay home or evacuate. I'm not worried about winds but am concerned about flooding and loss of electricity. We have a place in Metairie we can go to. Its higher ground and they just got a large generator. Its very tempting. Guess we'll decide in a few hours. Hope anyone in Sally's path stays safe!

    Morning, misfits.

Been looking like rain here for a week, but it's just smoke. That may change in the next few days, as they're guessing we'll have rain. Some. Maybe. Here and there. (Which usually means there, not here.)

And, it would make evacuation so much easier!

    Hola .. :)

Out of the blue, my two Hummingbirds, Ed and Trixie, showed back up on Saturday .. they then disappeared on Sunday .. and nothing this morning ..

Conditions are dry as a bone, although we had a slight rain on Friday, the ground just sucked it up .. my yard is a dusty, dormant grass wasteland .. I mowed yesterday just to knock down the tops and succeeded in spinning up a dust storm ..

    It's very dry here again.

Our property never stopped being green since spring. Usually in August I'm just blowing clouds of dust when I run the tractor over the back acreage. But not this year. Never got a break from mowing weekly. Most summers I can skip a large part of the property and only do it every other week.
