And this is where we have (d)evolved to .. paying for air .. I suppose it's likely a profit center when you figure all the places in the USA that have one of those machines ..
I know my mind lives too much in the past .. when I got out of the Military, I worked at a Station for a time .. pumped the gas, cleaned the windshield, and upon the Motorists request, checked the oil and the tire pressure ..

The only good thing about paying for air today is that it was a set the pressure at the pump machine which made it easy to zip around the car doing all the tires. I did test it for accuracy with the old school pressure gauge that's kept in the glovebox.
I could have circled around to my local gas station (but it's in the wrong direction for work) and used their air at no charge - they have a no-frills hose on the side of the building and if the staff is bored they come over to help an old lady.
