All complaining over having to stock the fridge with six different kinds of drinks have ceased until further notice! connie_wackygirl.gif Took my 3 bags of crushed cans to my favorite recycling center and received $8 this afternoon. I drink an RC once every couple of months but may need to reconsider my healthy lifestyle choices. Mauridia_41.gif Omgosh! I hope I don't start going through the trash cans in public places. heehee

I just finished watching part 1 of the PBS country music/Ken Burns series and am left with a serious musical question.

At what point does a violin turn into a fiddle? I had a friend in high school that played both with the same musical instrument, and she played very well. It was amazing to see her switch between classical and country music because even she seemed to turn into a different musician at the same time the instrument switched between violin and fiddle music. Same wood, same strings, same bow, same 12 notes--what is the deal?

I watched the first part of the PBS Ken Burns documentary on Ben Franklin last night, and it is quite sublime and worth the time .. my highest recommendation ..

Benjamin Franklin | PBS

Got both parts on the DVR, but haven't gotten to them, yet. Burns is a national treasure!

I don't know just how serious you are with the question .. it's like saying 'How can a guitar play Rock, Blues, Country, Jazz, etc ..

However, the Burns piece on Country Music was just mesmerizing for me, anyway .. simply a masterpiece ..

I really am serious. To me, the violin sounds like two different instruments when it switches between being a violin and being a fiddle. My head says they are the same, but my ears are all "nope...nope...nope."

It was the same when my friend was playing 1st chair violin in the HS orchestra, dressed up in her fancy orchestra formal dress, and then got up a did a fiddle solo from Cotton Eyed Joe (or something similar). It just blew my mind seeing and hearing the same girl playing the same instrument, but not believing they were really still the same as before.

Guitars seem to still be guitars even if they are playing different styles of music. Even a country song that has a violin in the mix seems to still be a violin, until Garth Brooks starts playing Baton Rouge and turns it into a fiddle.

I had saved the series last year based upon your recommendation, but I missed the first couple of episodes on the DVR until they started re-running it this week.

I think it has something to do with how you wiggle your behind while you are playing. View attachment 972455 I love both!

Thanks, I will have to watch that.
It really is a good series. I'm glad they did it when they did because so many of the artists interviewed are no longer with us.

now, places seem to all expect you to deal with one of their myriad so-called apps .. which I find to be a pain in the neck,

Do you think I chose the kiosk?

Contrarily, I like the fast-food apps. I'm pretty deaf, have a hard time understanding the spoken word, and much prefer not trying to understand a voice over a speaker or even from a live counterperson. Let me point-and-shoot for the things I want to order and arrange payment by written numbers vs some total mumbled by a person.
I place my order (and btw they don't prepare the food or charge my card until I say I'm outside waiting) drive in and pull into a designated space, click on the app to say which space I'm in, open my book, and they bring my food to me. (And I have "jumped the line" of all those cars waiting to get to the ordering spot. They put my order in when I click to say I'm there.)
Before I began using the app, I preferred the kiosk; it made many fewer errors than when I ordered verbally over the counter. Apparently counterpeople have as much trouble understanding the spoken word as I do.

BTW, this is why I prefer hanging out in online forums rather than hanging out with people locally: I can follow conversations, read what people are saying unambiguously, check what I'm saying to be sure it's what I want to say, and click 'Post' to say it. The world is a very different place for deaf people.

The apparent continual mutation of the COVID I suppose should not come as a surprise .. now, we have BA.2 .. I don't know if it there was ever a BA.1, but it's beginning to sound like a Windows update .. o_O

LOL; that's more or less why I switched from Windows to Macs a couple decades ago. (I'm finally getting a small Windows computer to run a few apps (not apps - programs, dammit) that have no good Mac counterpart.)

The thing is, at this point, after two main jabs and a booster, I'm really on the fence as to whether I should get a second booster .. I mean, it just starts to feel like these Pfizer vaccines are not near as effective as initially touted, yet still fairly effective .. and, it seems like the J&J vaccine was the least of all .. I have the Pfizer ..

A 4th shot, for me, would be 4 shots in about a years time .. I really hope that's not the trend .. They rushed the vaccines out very quickly, and, I'm no biologist, but I'd guess they have to tweak each new vaccine to fit the new variant .. just like a flu shot ..

I just don't know if I will get another booster .. o_O

The Covid vaccines work a bit differently than the flu vaccines by targeting a part of the virus that doesn't mutate with each new variant (unlike the flu vaccines). This is why they continue to cover the new variants. As for the immunity fading, all immunity fades; the Covid immunity (from vaccine; or acquired immunity, although acquired Covid immunity is more like flu immunity and more subject to variants) just seems to be one of the faster faders.

I'll be getting the 2nd booster when UofM-Health notifies me. I don't see that getting a Covid booster (because of fading) every year is more burdensome than getting a flu shot every year (because of variants). At least with the Covid vaccine, they don't have to guess (and fail, sometimes) which variants will be prevalent during the coming year. I get tetanus boosters every 10 years or so; how is this different, other than the frequency?

And BTW, the Covid vaccine (that covers variants) gives hope that a similar Flu vaccine (and others) will be found that will cover new variants, just like the Covid vaccine does. Last month's Scientific American magazine is all about the things we have learned from dealing with Covid.

The same can be asked about voices:

A friend who sings both Grand Opera and is the lead singer/bass player in her own rock band. (Strictly speaking, Queen of the Night is not Grand Opera, but it was the first video I found of her singing in that mode.)

Morning, misfits.

More rain in the guess for the day, but they're also mumbling about snow at sea level, starting tonight! Uh, did they forget that this is April?? But more snow pack, so I'll not complain. Much. :) Don't need to be going anywhere, so not really a big deal for us. Although the shoots popping up in the gardens might feel otherwise...

I forgot about singers, but the same thing applies to them.

Thank you. This is exactly why I love listening to others. . . gives me a new perspective and understanding. I had not even considered how much it could help the hearing impaired or deaf.

check what I'm saying to be sure it's what I want to say, and click 'Post' to say it.
As you may have observed, I experience premature comments whether I am talking or typing.viannen_39.gif
