Lounging By the Beach - Part 2

In the 60s, us kids were fed that tripe of war movies left over from WWII and that tv show, Combat. All were glorified and sanitized versions of war.

By the time that it was my turn to be a soldier, I had smartened up and realized that war was not fun and glory. Unfortunately, one of friends never figured that out and couldn't wait to see real combat. He was shot in Nam and almost died. He lost a lung and spent many months in recovery.

Yeah, bomb strapped and blew up. That was not much violence compared to Saving Private Ryan.

Sun, I'm with you on movie limits....Blow 'em up action...fine, i know it's not real...but too much reality, people harming people or animals, i just can't do it.

I'm glad you never had to see combat Jerry. One of my brothers was in Africa, decoding messages and the other was in 'Nam for two tours. Although not physically wounded, the mental trauma had to have been horrible with the things I overhead him telling my parents. They never would have allowed me to hear such horrors but I sneaked. Real smart. Now sometimes those horrors run around in my head.

Mine too, Sun. My late brother had two tours in Viet Nam and received two purple hearts which I still have. He suffered for years with a lot of schrapnel in his body, had malaria, and jungle rot on his face. He was in a special service called the Green Berets and was shot (but survived) when he was rapelling from a helicoptor.

I've been doing comparisons between local and Robbinsville weather via wunderground.com for the past week. They've been averaging 10-15° lower than local every day. Highs of 80 sound great compared to 95°. Early mornings in the 50s, could make an early riser out of me, at least for a few days there.

The Green Berets were a tough outfit, Sea. They got all the dirty jobs, too. Nope, when I went in, I did my best to just quietly put in my time, do my job and come home in one piece. If we had been fighting for home and family, it would have been a different story, I would have fought to defend that, but not Vietnam.
