In the 60s, us kids were fed that tripe of war movies left over from WWII and that tv show, Combat. All were glorified and sanitized versions of war.
By the time that it was my turn to be a soldier, I had smartened up and realized that war was not fun and glory. Unfortunately, one of friends never figured that out and couldn't wait to see real combat. He was shot in Nam and almost died. He lost a lung and spent many months in recovery.
