Well, I didn't sleep that long this time
oooh!!! good to know...have to do my homework on those!
Everything seems soooo $$$$$ to eat out in the big city though.
Are you planning a cross country trip??
Menupages is a good site to check out restaurants...they have some
reviews, but one of the best features of the site is the way they divide up the city by neighborhood so you can look for a restaurant in a particular area. You can also look in a smaller area, like only in the West 40s (near the Theater District). They also have a tab with the menu that lists prices. It is not always accurate (it might be outdated), but it will give you an idea of what is offered...It seems that the restaurants don't always update Menupages when they change something. I would also check out Yelp
reviews (IMO,
reviews on a web site have limited value since they are often glowing or hideous).
NY magazine and
Time Out: New York are good magazine resources, in addition to the newspapers.
With all of that out of the way

If you eat a late dinner at Orso, there is a good chance you will spy a Broadway or film actor. If that is your thing, then eat there after the show (I suspect it would be very late for you, since you're from the other coast). Becco is owned by Lidia Bost....(I can't remember her whole name

) from the several PBS cooking show series that she's done. The food for me, has always been very good. Barbetta is very expensive and fancy, but usually very good and worth it if the night is an occasion...it's also been around for a long time. All three of these restaurants are on a street called "Restaurant Row," so they are a bit pricier than some of the other neighborhood restaurants. Some other (slightly cheaper) Italian haunts in that part of the neighborhood are John's Pizzeria, Don Giovanni's, Pietrasanta, and Daniela. Out of those choices, I would go to John's first (but I wouldn't order a pizza there

even though some people love it) and order salad and pasta. John's is also a hang out for some of the theater folks to get a drink after the show...I try to avoid that, but it might be fun for someone from the "outside."
I know Orso and Barbetta have been in both TV and films, if that excites you too

But then, I would guess most NYC restaurants have as well at one time or another.
Sorry for the wall of text, folks
