No, well, that too, but a faulty charger or battery (or any USB device that uses a lot of power) can damage the whole mainboard, which is a bit expensive to replace. It's a rare thing of course, but it can happen, and has happened. (Although AFAIK not with an eGo-charger.)
A wall adapter or self-powered hub protects against that. Kind of like a safety belt. Chances are excellent you are fine without. Just when you do need it you are very glad you used it.
