My first Merlin from STS did have two clears, which is the reason I was surprised with this order. Maybe I was supposed to have received a smoked with the first but didn't know better and thought it was the norm. I wonder if when STS opened and replaced all those decks, a replacement tank was accidentally switched.

I doubt it... my new Black v2 came with one of each.

I thought I read that was the new norm, though I don't know when it would have started.

This is pure speculation, but when they were first released, folks with the black/smoked glass complained of problems viewing the juice holes. The reasonable decision would then have been to offer a clear replacement option to address the issue. But that would have created another supply problem. They planned and likely obtained x number of clear and x number of smoked (x being total run for the product). The only way to quickly supply the black finish customers would have been to pull from the clear inventory. That would have imbalanced stocks, so giving the SS purchasers the smoked balanced out the supply issue, and they could claim they did it to "give their customers more customization options". Or at least that's how I would have spun the change.

I can understand the above scenario and appreciate the difficulties of supply management. But I sill would have preferred clear glass replacements for both my Merlins, not just one.

Yep. That's how they all were. The first v1 waves all had one type of glass. The later releases (v2) have one of each. I have 4 v1' 2-ss, 2-blk. Both ss have clear. Both black have smoked.

So it's the "new" norm. Thanks.

I like having both types.
The Black looks wicked all "murdered out", but as said the smoked glass makes seeing the juice level and JFC position difficult in low light.

It's cool in TC, in power mode with a low tank though... not so much :p

Meh... we cross posted.

The only way to quickly supply the black finish customers would have been to pull from the clear inventory.

That could be what happened.
As I said a few days ago, I had ignored the Boreas/Merlin threads till a week ago, though I was aware of them. And I didn't go back to read this one from the beginning, so I haven't seen the likely complaints.

For now... I still like having both.

    Somewhere between here and there
I was pointed to this thread since I'm having leaking problems with the merlin I got a week or two ago. If I close the juice holes after each use then leaking is minimal but if I leave them open at all then I have liquid all over my mod and hand. I watched tutorials and it took me two tries to get it wicked right but feel like I have that right now. I really like how the merlin vapes but have just about had it with the leaking. Mine came with one clear glass and one smoked glass. How do I know if it's a v1 or v2? Also if this problem has already been handled in this thread then could someone please tell me about how far to read back? Sixty eight pages will take a long time to scan through.

Take a look at the juice holes. If they're oblong sorta rectangular shaped, then you have version 2. Regardless v1 or 2 the only time I've had an issue with leaking was from bad wicking. I use a cotton fluffed out Scottish roll type, making sure it's down in the juice holes, but not obstructing them, pushing them back with my curved needle nosed tweezers. I saw a YouTube video demonstrating wicking the Merlin. As I recall, it actually used more wicking than I do. Don't have the link but a YouTube search should find some demos of wicking that base.

Also make sure you have the oring in place where you open the top cap to fill.

Here are two views. It's not totally helpful as the wick is saturated in use so you can't tell how long to cut it dry (and looking a little dingy, might think about changing it soon).

And from the side so you can see the juice holes
