Dude! You went MICRO micro! Off the chain my man. That hex key is tiny! It fits with no problem in my micro. You are a badass for attempting to go so small bore! I think that what is key is the small amount of fresh liquid that it takes to wet the tiny coil gives improvements to the vape quality over a thicker wick. I think hydronics are the bigger factor than the ohms.

Cotton also seems to be the media best suited to this setup.

I like it.

Please keep us updated on further advances in coil micrology.

I know right!!! When I saw your picture I saw the hex key and thought that was what you were referring to but I had a brainfart and realized after the fact that the key you were showing was not a Hornet hex key! When I made that MICRO,micro coil it came out beautiful nice and tight but then trying to thread the cotton thru ..... forgetaboutit! The strand was so thin it was almost non existant!
My setup now works great. Like I said, slightly smaller than what I was using, a plastic straw from WD 40 can with 4/5 wraps @ 1.33 ohms, now smaller needle with 5 wraps @ 1.34 ohms.1 extra wrap to get same ohms and sits slightly closer to the feed hole.

If it's any consolation, I think we ordered the ERA at the same time, more or less, and mine hasn't arrived yet, so maybe the weather has delayed it's arrival. Doesn't help much, I know, but at least you're not alone in the boat :)

I feel your pain. But, I have good news. The stars must have all been in alignment tonight or something because my dh asked me over dinner if I felt like taking a drive up to the Apple store tomorrow afternoon, it just happens to be 10 minutes away from where I work. I never even got a chance to come up with an excuse. I checked the tracking and my ERA was delivered today! It will be sitting on my desk tomorrow when I pick it up.

This time tomorrow I will be vaping on my first RBA :D

I am sending good vibes that yours will be in the mail tomorrow!!!!

This micro-wrapping intrigued me for the hornet. I've been using a toothpick for about 4 wraps, using 32g, getting about 1.5ish ohms. I try to use about an inch and a quarter of wire, and snug the coil up close as possible. While It was good, I've been messing with wick thickness. I like embroidery thread right now and it's pretty fine/thin.

So, after a dismal wick I made today, didn't have it thick enough, I decided to try a micro-wrap and two strand wick. I searched for something smaller than the toothpick. I spied that tiny allen wrench for the hex screws, compared it to the toothpick and decided it was way too small. So I dug around in my desk and found a heavy duty paper clip. I opened up one leg and used it to make 5/6 wraps and scrunched them tight. It metered 1.3 something. I wicked it, wet it with some juice, let it sit about an hour and a half. So far, I'm liking this!

I was having trouble with gunked up and slightly burnt wicks in the hornet. Using my original toothpick and 3 or 4 strands of embroidery thread works very well in my reomizer on the VVGrand. I'm not sure why that same set up didn't have as long a life on the hornet.

So far so good.

Well, I guess I liked it for about an hour. It was very fussy with vapor performance. So, I tore it out and tried again, used the paper clip to wrap, but wrapped more. I think I've got about 8 or 9. It metered a couple tenths higher. About 1.7 now. I wet the wick, let it sit over night and will see how it is today. The couple hits this morning were more to my liking.

Okay, so I've used the new wrap set-up extensively today. It's very good and my coil still looks pretty clean. I'm impressed. :)

Like I said, a cat always prevails!

I have also been liking the dynamics of the micro bore coil and low profile cotton wick. I do it more for vape quality than wick longevity. I don't mind rewicking every day if I have too.

I'm glad to hear that you are likin it!

I must say, excellent find with the micro coil. I was skeptical, but I made one for an era and played a bit with the wicks. I just didn't think that little wick would be enough so I packed some extra cotton around the coil. It did okay for a bit, but flooded easily and the flavor wasn't quite there. I was about to give it up but then I thought I should try again. This time I just made the thinnest wick I could and placed it through the coil. Trimmed it up so there's just a small tail and its vaping great. The flavor seems a bit more intense. can't explain it, but I like it.

I made the coil around a fat t-pin. I reworked my whole lineup tonight. Two era's and chalice with about 10 wraps 30g kanthal at about 1.8 ohms on the VVs, and hornet with 8 wraps of 28 Kanthal at 1 ohm for the grand.

Hildicat, I'm glad that you are rockin with it! I was hoping you would give it a shot and provide additional feedback from an experienced RBA user / veteran vaper standpoint. Thanks for the feedback.

I stand here grand in hand, micro coil just churning out the tasty fog with a big old smile on my face!

I just took a very close look at my wick on this set up. It was very clean - not all dark oily looking! Despite that, I pulled it, and did a quick dry burn - the coil was relatively clean, too before the burn. This is the cleanest I've ever seen any of my hornet's coils after a day of vaping. I rewicked with cotton ball fluff this time. We'll see how today goes. I'm gonna try this coil set up on my reomizer the next time I redo it.

I was playing around with this for several hours last night. This is my first coil ever. I used a paperclip to wrap it, 32 gauge. It metered out at 1.3. Getting the piece of cotton to fit was a challenge. I did not like the flavor of the cotton, but all I had were cotton q-tips so my brilliant idea was to harvest the tip for my wick. Don't try this as it tasted like wet socks.

Rookie mistake ...I had so much fun watching the coil glow red that when i put the cotton in the coil I forgot and hit the button again... burning cotton smellls bad

I decided to try a silica wick so I wrapped a few more coils. My second coil is not really micro but I am posting the pics here for comments. this one metered at 1.8 and tasted better, but I am still not there yet. So I have a few questions..

How do you pretorch and do you do it with both the silica and the wire?
Should the coil be touching the base?

I plan to pick up some organic cotton balls today and will try the micro coil again later. Please take a look at my photos below and let me know what you think. I am a sponge for your guys knowledge right now. Thanks.

Ellen! Those are nice pix! And nice coils. It is fun isn't it? I'm so glad you finally got your RBA.

For me RBAs opened up a whole new dimension of life / vaping to enjoy.

We're all becoming electronics geeks in the process!

Keep the pix and feedback coming please.

Those look really, really nice. With the cotton (what I use), the taste (dirty socks, you say?? :)) will go away (for me, anyway) after a very few hits...then you're home free. Unless you dry burn it...... :) You have it. From now on it's just perfecting your technique. Gil (unsure) asked me yesterday why we make/install so many wicks. He's using a coil/wick on his Reomizer that he's had on there for a month and it's doing fine. I told him just because we could...and for practice. Ha. He understood that.

Good job.

EDIT: I found organic cotton balls at Walgreens. They're called "Studio 35 Beauty." If they're not in the medical section of the store, check the cosmetics section. Or Vise versa. I've found them in different places in different Walgreens stores.

Thanks guys. I definitely need to practice my technique, but I am happy with my first attempts. I am a tinkerer by nature so I know I will not stop fiddling until I am satisfied

I want to play with this now, but my dh is waiting for me and I need to get some stuff done today. I got a late start this morning as I was up until 3:00am building coils...

This is a rolled cotton / micro coil wick after all day yesterday and all morning today. I have been vaping the hell out of it. About 4ml in, and I'm still loving the bright flavor of the unflavored nic.

I want my coils to look as tight as yours. That chalice with the hole between the posts looks sweet. I think that configuration would make placing the coils easier.
