Excellent. Just also wrapped 11/12 wraps around a paperclip with 30 AWG wire... measured at 1.32Ω. Put through a single strand of hemp cord... still tastes a little "hempy," but it's starting to saturate now. My main concern is whether that single strand will have enough wicking capability.

Nice build. I have not tried curving the coil like that before.

Just keep squonking and keeping it wet shouldn't be an issue.

If it doesn't wick fast enough, you can get another strand or two and hang them over the coil.

It seems to be doing fine now. Took a little longer than organic cottonball material to lose its "earthy" taste, but seems to be holding up great after 1-2ml.

The curve was a little bit of a, "hell, why not" move... figured it was best to try and keep as much of the coil as possible over the center tube.

Finally got around to try this yesterday when I found something tiny enough to wrap a coil around.
Ended up with a 9 wrap coil using 28 Kanthal, which measured 0.8 ohm.
Have been a bit frustrated a bit lately due to a juice I love also really loves to gunk up my wicks and coils. So it was time to try this and cotton again.

And holy crap Batman, this was a superb setup! Thanks!

For some weird reason the cotton doesn't seem to gunk up that much or maybe it's the number of wraps that evaporates the juice better, after a day of vaping it's still going strong.
Really, really pleased with how this vapes. :toast:

Blix, that is bloody awesome bro! I too have had nothing but great results using these tiny compact coils and cotton - such that I use no other.

I look forward to strapping one to Robs new RBA.

Shazbot. Nanu Nanu (I think that's from the end of acdc night prowler but originated from a show I never watched from the 80's)

Rock on Blix. :)

The "Snake" build.

Let us know how it holds up. 11/12 wraps and a 1.3ohm reading? Simply incredible! Good job!

I have found that a 1,3 coil is a pretty sweet build.
I use a nail for a picture hanging kit, its got a little 'handle' on one side

I trim the cotton wick within an eight of an inch of the ends of both sides of the coil

each time I re wick the coil I can re insert the hanger nail through to straight and maintain any spacing screwed up from dewicking

after dewicking and dryburning, a little paint brush to dust of the burnt gunk your all set to rewick.

to make building a 'micro coil' easy just give yourself at least an inch or so of extra wire on each side and keep your coils in the range of 8-12 wraps its usually gonna be right on a 1.5 to 2.0 range. The vvgrand allows you to adjust on the fly to whatever coil you make up. bonus!

I think the key to anyone having trouble is to realize that kanthal is pretty cheap stuff and if it means you put big 2 inch tails on each side so be it just concentrate on wrapping the wire around the 'nail, drill or what your comfortable with'.

When wicking the coil keep in mind how much the cotton will expand, you really don't need a whole boatload of cotton in a wick.

Fairly easy stuff, good lighting and a pair of readers will usually get you through a build. good luck.

Dano, that's almost exactly how I do mine these days, only I don't use as many wraps. I'm using 32 gauge Kanthal....are you using 30 gauge? I end up changing out the cotton wick every few (several) days, but my coils have been lasting and lasting. I wrap my coil around the end of a little screwdriver that's about the size of a toothpick (5/64") and I wrap 5 or 6 wraps for about 1.3 ohms. Great vape!

EDIT: I do the same thing you do....when I'm re-wicking it, I re-insert the screwdriver in the coil to straighten it out if it got a little wonky from removing the old cotton. Works perfectly.

I was at the local B&M the other night and a fellow vaper ( a penelope user!) was amazed at the vapor production of my micro-coil with cotton ball wick in a hornet on my mini. :D It's all I've used for the last couple weeks and see no need to change it. My wicks stay very clean and there's minimal coil gunk. I do like a longer wick, though. I just curl some of the cotton around the posts. I rewick every few days and maybe dry burn the coil once before just replacing it.

Yep. I'm all about keeping my coil "integrity" and using it over and over again while simply changing the wick.

But do you guys/gals find that no matter what; at a certain point you have to build a new coil? That no amount of "dry burning" will improve the taste or remove the juice crud or oxidation or whatever it is. The great taste goes away and you have to do a new coil build?

Or do I just love experimenting with coil builds?

Thanks,

Norman

30 ga is what I have on hand

with the vvgrand I think you could adjust your vape with just about any gauge.

cotton wick is just so much more forgiving in letting you know when to squonk.

the silica hits you like a car accident when its dry............ I've got the break in time for cotton down to a short time by having another reo nearby while it soaks in. it does help to have fresh batteries while breaking in a new wick, that's my thoughts anyways....

I've ruined mine dewicking before I've ever 'had' to replace any coil yet.

but i'm just a baby in the vaping world...............

 I have the same question! Ha. I haven't left a coil alone long enough to actually see how long it will last. I will wrap a new one just.....because. I don't even notice a bad taste or a real "reason" for doing it....I just sit down at my "place" to piddle....maybe just change the cotton....and end up making a whole new wick, coil and all. It's a sickness, I tell you........

EDIT: Just now....just because I'm reading this thread.....I just made a new one!!!

improving the vape on a Reo is not easy.

nirvana can be unsettling for us I guess..............

Yep. It really comes into focus when you say "I can do better than this" and you remove your old coil and build one that's worse and wonder "Why did I do that?"

Well; we wouldn't know what good builds are without bad ones would we?

Nothing wrong with showing off!!
