Micro Coil for the RBA on your REO

I love cotton too. cheap, damn near natural and simple to use and replace. best wick material IMO.

I read about you using micro coils in a Protank and it's very interesting. I prefer the taste of cotton. Question: If you are using a microcoil, it would have a coil diameter of no bigger then 1.6mm right? What do you do to keep the Protank from flooding? Do you just lie a strand of cotton on top of your coil or somehing? Second question; I like to chainvape. As these are very, very short, small and thin wicks, how can they keep up when chainvaping?

silica doesn't really wick well enough to fly in a micro. It may work for some, but nextel and cotton are both much more effective. Has anyone tried hemp?

Hemp is all I use ATM. I have some other stuff gifted by another generous REOnaut as well. I just haven't had the time to play with it yet. The hemp lasts for days / simple to thread / great flavor / great wicking / great retention of juice / clouds of vapor. I've used cotton in the past, but I use thick juices and it just doesn't last long enough for my chain vaping self.

Edit: I don't necessarily use thick juices, but they are all moderately dark to opaque. And, they killed cotton real quick in my experience. YMMV

OKAY. I finally got around to trying a "micro coil" for the first time today. Russ, if I wore a hat, I'd take my hat off to you. I've been making my regular coils wrapping 30 or 32 gauge Kanthal around a little screwdriver, then threading a couple of strands of thread (doubled which makes four strands) through it. Usually wrap about 5-6 coils and come up with a coil that ranges between 1.0 ohms and 1.4 ohms....depending on the wire I use. They've worked great, so I didn't see any need to change my system. Then, you sent me that little 16 gauge needle, and I've had it in my mind that I'd give it a try one of these days when my eKowool test coil was ready to be changed.

Question: is a 16 guage needle to which you are referring bigger or smaller than a 1/16" drill bit? That's what I'm using now and works very well. 8 wraps on 30guage gives me around 1.4 ohms. Just curious as I am not a needle size expert, as I usually use a staple gun or double sided tape if i need to sew anything! :)

Well.....tonight I made my first micro coil.....about 12 wraps around the 16 gauge then pulled some cotton ball cotton through it.....and it is AWESOME! It came out about 2.0 ohms, and I'm running in on my VVGrand, and it is sooooo sweet. It even "pops" a tiny bit when I hit it. (I love that.)

SO.......thanks, Russ, for all the research, the testing, the picture tutorial, and the 16 gauge needle. I'm a fan.

Rudy, I don't know the answer to that....that's a Russ (super_x_drifter) question. He sent me the needle in a care package, and I don't know the measurements. Based on the ohms you get and the gauge wire you're using and the number of wraps, it sounds about the same size. Best I can do.

Hey Rudy! Glad you are digging it bro. The 16 ga needle is the same size as my 1/16" drill bit :)

Well finally made a coil I am somewhat happy with. 1.6ohms and I used cotton.

Looks very nice! With my ERA I noticed that the outer shell gets pretty hot. If it does, and if that bothers you, you can stuff the loose end of the wick between the posts. That seems to stop the overheating.

Nice looking setup! Well, I was going to try cotton; but apparently, you've used it all. :(

;)

Yeah I know, but if you are like me and have tried somewhat to like RBA's at all, you pull out all the stops. The cotton did it, silica just doesn't do it for me. Maybe I just need to break them in more? To be honest, I probably will always use cartos since my ADV is Dekang DK-Blend with the occasional Boba's.

i too will never not use cartos but these MC's with cotton are just sick. Can wait for my RDA to come in from UK.

Anyone try a dual MC?

I've tried unsuccessfully. Two 30ga microcoils in parallel. Either concept, or my implementation sucked.

Pdib tried two 28ga microcoils in series, or rather, one longer microcoil, bent in half in the middle, with two wicks. Allegedly, it worked well :)

Yeah, that was really just a single. I haven't done any kind of duals for a long time. I really prefer the air flow control with a single. With wire gauges running down to Kanthal25-equivalent, I don't need it for power.

The duals I've built were hard to maintain and ran pretty slow. The only way I'd try duals now is thin wire running parallel on a single wick. But the Micros are SO much more effective.
