I saw a similar segmented tip on their site & just had to have one.
Are they ending production of this style ?
I'd imagine it's difficult to charge enough for these given the level of detail & work involved before even beginning the turning process. Or maybe they just don't want too many duplicates in circulation ..
Looked at some of his other work, the guy's a bit of a genius turning miniature stuff. Nice to see someone doing something unique.

May just be a material issue as Kayte told me he was about out of one of the woods. I'm sure he would do another one almost the exact way out of some other materials.Maybe Idk??
Totally a genius craftsman and I am a proud owner of two of his works.

Hummm ... my left or your left? The light colored one to my left has blue on part of it, the dark one on my right does not; and I don't remember what either wood is.
The only one I know is the Amboyna Burl and the little shorty one is some kind of Hawaiian wood.

Viewing the photo. Top section of your display, tip on the far left with the circular grain pattern.

Dale - I think your photo came out quite nice and you have such a pretty collection! (I like the stand, too!) The one on the top left is Olive wood. It has a diagonal cut which makes it 1/2 Olive wood and 1/2 deep blue acrylic. (Not clay... sorry!)

Choochoo - if you had waved that thing at me I would have been on your porch in 2 seconds flat, wanting to try it out. And twirl the Ice Princess in the sunlight for awhile. Don't know what's wrong with your neighbors. ;)

Where the heck are you guys seeing BLUE?

Here - this one:

Look at the very bottom Robin, there is a thin slice of blue showing. On the other side it goes up higher ... it may look like a shadow to you.
Wish I could remember what Kayte called it and I'd pull up her picture but I don't

I think this is all of them Kayte, except for the three I've given away :)
The one's on the circle are wooden, the rest are acrylic's.

I made the list too! Thanks carbonbegone for the inspiration for this piece!

    Just to be clear;
100% of the design & inspiration comes from Doug. I just had him make something he'd already done before.
Evidently, he's been constructing things in the random segmented style for a couple decades. Originated the technique I believe.

Yes he did indeed come up with the concept.

Hello! I've got two lovely wood tips today (so far.) :D The first up is a brand new type of tip that I adore! You see, this is the kind of work that Doug has done for years and I've wanted to see it done in a drip tip so I'm pretty excited about it! Lots of wood turners do segmented turning, but Doug came up with the concept of 'random segmented turning' about 20 years ago. (If you see any random segmented turning, it is either his work or a copy. Yep. I'm a proud wife. :D )

So, he has taken this concept:
    ransegmaplepurp_zpsdb8792aa.jpg

    and turned it into this:
Random Segmented - Big Leaf Maple, Silver Maple, Red Maple, Mahogany and Sapele SOLD
    RandomSegmentedMaple-12-28-2_zps9cb6f086.jpg

Double Dyed Black/Green Box Elder Burl SOLD
    DoubleDyedBoxElderBurl-BlackGreen12-28-1_zps7a53d5f5.jpg

Just a bump so some of you that are interested in segmented tips can see the beauty of them.
Well written story of the birth of the concept Kayte.

Sent from Canis Majoris on Sawdust :D

Thank you, as you know Kayte and Doug get all the credit ;)
Not really! If it wasn't for all of you, there wouldn't be any tips!
    ––––––––––––

It's headed my way as I type ... Doug & Kayte are terrific folks, they even let me tweak the proportions a bit during the process.
Never would have known something like this existed without ECF. Thanks.
Behold ! ; Ramdom Segmented Bowling Pin.
Hi carbon!! Nice to see you here! Have you gotten it yet? Probably not, eh? I get impatient on this side of vape mail, too. :D

When Doug made the block for yours he just made it large enough for 4 tips... all of which have been spoken for. He might make another block using the same woods... sometime. He's working on a couple of blocks with different woods now. I can't wait to see what he comes up with!

May just be a material issue as Kayte told me he was about out of one of the woods. I'm sure he would do another one almost the exact way out of some other materials.Maybe Idk??

Just out of that particular block. He'll be making more random segmented though. ;)

Can't wait to see what you pick!

I actually have a tip to post! Be back shortly. :)

Yes, it arrived today .... we'll, it's, I'm kinda speechless right now. Excuse me.

Edit - ok now feel able to render an opinion, hopelessly mesmerized previously.
I'll just say this ; It's a rare occasion that one's expectations are exceeded by several multitudes - this is such an occasion.

Very glad you're happy and enjoying it! Tell your wife it's the prettiest bowling pin I've ever seen, too. I still think Doug needs to build a miniature bowling alley with sets of random segmented wood pins... and gorgeous acrylic balls of course. :D
