I used to do quite a bit of traveling and had good results with Priceline. You need to understand the perimeters if bidding because you must accept whatever is offered and sometimes I needed something more speciic (like traveling with pets). Just bidding, with no special needs, I've gotten 4**** rooms (resorts) at 2** prices (think Econolodge). Be very careful bidding.
When I have needed something specific (usually), I've gone into their fixed price area and screened hotels / anemities. I've found rooms in sold out areas at decent prices. What I like is that there are no hidden extra fees (like Hotel.com or Orbitiz - ugh). But the hotel reviews on the site and the maps are extremely helpful. They also list phone numbers, website, email so I can get more information, in a standard easy to read format. I've gone to Priceline just for that. Love that area.
If you want to try bidding, there's forums that'll help like 'better bidding' or 'bidding for travel' (it's been awhile since I've done that). They have lists of hotels and the ratings, what people are getting for what price and can help with strategy (you only get so many bids without increasing area or price). When I've asked why a hotel offered a low price I've gotten the answer "last minute group cancellation". I can beat rack rate by > 50% so the hassle is worth it sometimes.
Anyway, that's my
Have fun.
