COULD be a culprit.
Until we have more vape specific research we can't be sure.

Let's not jump the gun and do the same things we criticize ANTZ for doing.
Exactly.

The 30 or so confirmed cases of popcorn lung (EVER) were in industrial settings (except for the popcorn eater, and that case is suspicious) and the details of how they inhaled the diacetyl were VERY different from vaping. There has not been a single confirmed case of a vaper being harmed by diacetyl or any other diketone.

Now I'm not saying it can't hurt you to vape it, but I AM saying that what we inhale is very different than what those people inhaled, so it's apples to oranges. I vape diketones every day and have no intention of stopping until somebody proves it is harmful to vape. Do what seems right to you, but I just wanted to set the record straight - many are wary of diketones, but so far there is zero evidence that it causes harm when vaped.

Re - mouth to lung or straight to lung - I started with a pen style that is meant for mouth to lung, but it made me cough. I seemed to naturally go straight to lung (I inhaled air around the outside of the tip to make this work) and I didn't cough. Seems weird to me too but that was my experience.

I'm now straight to lung on a subtank mini with 0.5 ohm coils and it doesn't ever make me cough.

Having worked in the vape industry, I am aware that a high number of e-liquid manufacturers have dropped their butterscotch flavors because that flavor requires diacetyl.
Sorry,
I may have worded my reply in a way that you didn't get the gist.

We have no recorded cases of "popcorn lung" from vaping.
Not a single one.

The truth is, we don't know if vaping butterscotch, or custard etc, with Diacetyl can cause popcorn lung.

Vaping may not be a "culprit" at all.
;)
