Checking in, Jim, Rwechsler and everyone. Its been a little while. I got my second DID a few weeks ago... I find I am still having a lot of problems... I recently watched all of Rwechsler's videos for some fresh ideas. I started using the DID back in July and to this day get so many shorts. I have found myself in the last few weeks spending an average of 2 hours almost every night either rebuilding wicks and coils or tweaking the one I have in there and am getting so frustrated.
I do a quick jack frost, burn with a propane torch for 55 secs, douse with PG/VG, another 55 secs with the torch, douse, then get to red hot again. I know exactly how much time is too much as I have gotten the crumbly wicks from over- torching and 55 seconds twice seems to be about 30 seconds off from crumbly town. I have tried the paper trick again as well as to start out burnign the coil wet as Rwechsler does, etc. I also use a nail to keep the wick the perfect size and keep it in while wrapping. Still am fiddling way too much. I get a perfect coil and an hour later am getting a hotspot sometimes under the kanthal toward where the coil leaves the wick to travel to the positive. I try twisting the wick to make it go away, loosening and reattaching the positive or getting the portion of coil between the wick and positive as close as possible, reattaching and tightening or loosening the negative, cleanign the coil on the wick with a tooth brush/ vodka or dry burn, etc. Not a day goes by any more than I am not pulling the cap off constantly to push it with my nail to make a short go away, etc. Many times, I get a hole that burns through the wick toward the top fromt he kanthal even from a short dry or wet initial burn.
I love the DID's and when I get it perfect, its great. I do not want to go back to any of my old set-ups is this one has so much potential. Just wondering if there are any new tips out there. I have been using my Precise again to see if that helps and its a little better but I like my Provari best though I am often getting shorts as soon as I hit the button (E1). I should mention I got the 'vari very wet and so at Provape's recommendation I swirled isopropyl inside and dried for two days (twice). I am not sure if it is damaged and causing shorts to happen more frequently. Still, with the Precise I have many issues too. I am considering trying the 30 awg so the precise hits harder and I can focus on that. I also get E8s occasionaly and E2's. I got a few E4's but that was from the water.
I've tried using a narrower (thinner layers of mesh) wick, 3/4 coils, 2/3 coils, oxidizing less or more, wrapping tight, wrapping loose, wrapping on the wick off the DID and on. I have been using Rweschler's method of turning the DID but this last week and the coils seem to come out much more uniform but not a very noticeable difference. I now carry both DIDs with me, filled, and both PV's and am constantly tinkering these days. Sometimes I'll start what starts out as a perfect wick and ten minutes later I am getting hotspots and trying to clear them for so long the just- filled tank goes empty and I'm out 4ml's. I also try only burning with a new coil for a second at first slowly going up in duration but inevitibly get either a hotspot toward the top, a small spark, or just an instant E1 on the Provari.
I needed to at least try to see if anyone had new ideas as I realized the nights I spend frustrated are really starting to get to me and wanted to reach out. I may need to take a break for a while.

Ok, first off, go out and get yourself a butane torch!!!!! The one I use in my tutorials was $15 or so at a local hardware store, but I've used everything from a $5 gas station torch lighter to a fancy creme brule torch from williams sonoma, so just about any butane torch will do. Ages ago I tried using a propane torch and experienced the same crumbling wicks that you mentioned, and even when my wicks didn't crumble, they never seemed to oxidize right, and if they did, the flavor was always a little off. Propane torches burn at upwards of 4,000º, where as a butane torch won't burn much hotter than 1,700º, which is really all you need. Next tip, once you wrap a new coil, test fire it using the Precise with a battery that is almost out of charge, as a fully charged battery paired with a short is an easy way to pop your coil right outta the gate. Try out those two pointers for now, but if you keep having problems, shoot me a PM and I'll give you my contact info so you can either give me a call or video chat me on skype/facebook/aim and I will help walk you through troubleshooting your setup.
Lastly, no matter how frustrated you get, I strongly suggest you stay away from any of the gimmicks and tricks like the cigarette paper or cotton ball nonsense!!! Considering how hard of a time you're having, I think you'll find your next succesfull coil/wick much more gratifying if you can pull it off without resorting to any shortcuts.

Also, I know it's kind of a ridiculous, niche product, but if anyone's interested, I just ordered myself a pretty unique accessory: Becton Dickinson - 512141 - BD Multifit Syringes, Reusable, BD Medical - Individually Wrapped Syringes (Each)
It's a professional/medical grade pyrex syringe! The way I see it, I use my syringe almost every damn day to fill up tanks, the text that shows the amount of liquid on the tanks of all of the ones I have/have had has rubbed off, and the ones I have are all plastic POS, so why not get something that's going to last me forever (seeing as I don't break it...), juices won't ever linger in it, is effortless to clean, is 100% sterile and safe, and was made in America? The price tag is pretty steep, especially considering there are $1 or $2 alternatives out there, but I think it'll be pretty cool!

LOL at the gimmicks. I only recently tried to resort to the paper trick again. In theory it makes sense but didnt change anything for me. I am trying to think back to what I used before the torch. A very good idea. I will start there. I thought it would just do the job quicker and I experimented with the total burn time a ton of times and thought this was best as it doesnt crumble but seems perfectly oxidized. I burn way less than others who are using butane but you are right that it may be more than just the total time, the temperature may be affecting it. Over oxidizing could explain why the hot spot seems to happen Underneath the coil- if it is already starting to deteriorate, it could be making it worse and starting a burn underneath. I would not have thought of that.
Thanks a lot for the support. Ill get a hold of you and let you know if that helps matters. RIght now, I have a mostly decent DID set up on my Precise, E1s on the precise. I know you are a big proponent of the Mechanical Only school but like the versatility of the precise. My other next step is to try 30awg so the precise will hit harder. The whole reason I got the Provari was for that very reason, to go up to 4.5 or more with a 2 ohm coil since I cant seem to get the wattage I want at 4.2 with 32awg.

When you said steep, I was thinking like 15 each. 70 is a ton but they look very nice. I have been waiting for a modder to start selling nicer filling syringes made out of something other than plastic or another good option for a rebuildable. You know, something that looks classy next to a nice PV set up.

I think you are torching way too long. When I do the jack frost I only torch for a few seconds, I let the sheet glow red them move to another section. I turn the sheet over and repeat. Torching is literally only a few seconds.
Here is what I just tried the other night a d it worked great..... after the quick JF torch....roll your wick.......wrap the coil around the mesh and torch just until everything glows. You can douse in water if you want. Then apply juice and burn off with regular lighter 2 or 3 times.
Install the wick in the did and tighten the nuts. Be sure to keep the wire even all the way up, I have a bad habit of pulling the top wire too tight. The 28 g helps with this as it is pretty stiff and would tale a lot to pull it too tight.
Minimal fiddling is required.
Also the thicker guage wire is easier to work with. I just got 28ga and love the stuff.

I would so like a cover for the needle part of the syringe and a sheath for the whole shabang. Maybe Jim would be interested in making us something when he finds time next year... oops, baby on the way... okay, in 18 years when she/he's off to college.
I think you guys may be right on the oxidizing. Remember in the beginning when everyone said you couldnt torch too much? I thought just torching twice for under a minute was perfect but maybe it needs way less. I may try torching it all together with a new butane but find when I wrap off the DID and then insert I never get the coils close enough to the wick and those spots glow red even when wet and not vaporize juice.. I may try this again too. Rwechsler's way I find works because you can really control the tension. The only tough part is when you have to move the wire up to go around the positive. Sometimes I have to push the coil down because it is too high and continue to wrap. That can be touchy but I probably need more practice with that method..

Good catch! That's what I do too, torch until it glows orange hot (only takes a few seconds), and move on to the next spot, next side, next edge, unti the whole thing has been spot torched... except I repeat all steps in case I missed a spot. (don't have multi-meter yet to test for hot spots before rolling). Even so, all in all it only takes around 5 minutes over the stove top.

Do you only do the JF, Uma, and skip torching the rolled wick itself?
You can just do the JF and roll then do juice burns.
Another thing you might try if you have some 400 mesh is to make a solid wick. Cut your mesh 4 or 5 inches long, do the JF then roll it tight. No need to worry about a hole down the middle. This will make a very sturdy wick that holds a lot of juice and is a lot easier to coil. To help with the tension ....if you are rolling on the wick before putting it in the DID wrap an extra wrap. The bottom. 2 coils can be snugged up when you take the wire to the ground screw. The topmost wrap you will uncoil and take it around the positive this will snug up the one below it.
Burning your kanthal will make it much less 'springy' and lessen the amount of slack that it creates when wrapping the coil. It also lessens the mystery shorts that pop up several days into vaping a perfect wick and coil.
