30mm mesh seems to be my sweet spot.

It seems as though after I have learned from my mistakes, and actually read others' techinques in wick/coil prep, that the DID is even more awesome than I experienced in my first couple of days with it.

I couldn't understand the lack of huge vapor plumes last night. After reading others' ACTUAL measurements. Of wick dimensions I realized I had rolled waaaaay too much wick. My assumption was that more wick equates to more juice to the coil, right? WRONG!. Since receiving my DID, I have just used half of one of the sheets of mesh that were included. That's close to 30mm. This morning I unrolled one and cut off ~20mm and re-rolled it, re-coiled it and WOW! The vapor is so much more prominent now. I turned my watts down, as the juice I'm using gets really hot really fast (5%PGA). With the Watts down to around 8 and the new 20mm roll w/ 5 wrap coil. I've experience an even better flavor and vapor production.

I guess the moral of this post is: when it comes to SS mesh and resistance wire- more is not MORE.

It is a 2.2 ohm coil at 4.6 volts.

Thanks. I wrapped it around a #4/40 screw. One of the ones you find on the back of a computer.

Ya but that's cheating :D

Actually a great idea. Keep the tips comin' folks, those still having difficulty will eventually try something that works for them.

DID coil thoughts:

ok, so I have had my did for 4 days. I decided to re-coil my did today using a combination of methods I have been thinking about. So the wick, I removed but kept, it is well seasoned and ready for further use. I decided to mix techniques. I used the Peter K method to make the coil. I found a drill bit that fit the hole perfectly and used it to wrap 33 a-1 kanthal around 4 times tightly. Pulled hard around the coil. I plopped the drill bit into the reservoir hole, and connected the coil top and bottom. I then removed the bit and slipped the wick in. (I knew the wick was smaller than the hole because I wrapped it tight last time.) Fired it up, and Wah Lah, worked perfect. Oh ya, once I put the wick in, I took a needle and straighten and evened up the coils, making sure coil was not touching at the bottom, and the wick was close, but not touching brass center pin. I like this method because I can remove the wick for cleaning, and it floats the wick comfortable in the coil. If I were to need to adjust the wick, from say, touching the bottom of the reservoir it would be easy peasey. The Peter K method normally uses an UN-oxidized wick, but I did it his way, with an oxidized wick and seems to work well.

This tip with #4/40 screw is great idea!! Thank you, buddy! And I prefer the Genesis setup with just 2 posts for the contacts.. Easier to keep the coil from the shorts on the contacts.. And the idea without the brass nuts is even better. Seems like the nuts always about to touch the wick..

i have a question. how can that many wraps be 2.2 ohms?

That's just what it is.

I used a piece of 32 gauge Kanthal A about 50mm long.

My leads are about 0.6 ohms

The wire measures about 3.0 ohms

The same size wire from the Kanthal supplied with the DID measures 2.3 ohms.

Go figure.

Hmmmm, and one would think it would gain a bit of resistance being connected and wrapped / wet with juice, + internal device load. oh it's hurting what little bit of brain I have left. :)

Edit @ Darryll. Thanks for the technical info. Gotta love it. ;)

Since I'm still waiting on mine I have a few questions:

1)Is there any reason most of the pictures I have seen of everybody's setup the wick is much smaller than the one Jim uses in his "setup video".Just because it's easier or has some taste/less likely to "short"?

2)Who is using the "nuts" instead of just wrapping wire on the post? Why?

3)Who is using a wick made by one of the non-standard methods(other than heating/quenching/heating/quenching etc..).Benefits other than easier?

Well, just got some 36ga nichrome, wound a 3/3 coil, hit 1.5 ohms right away. Vapor crazy. Tried to take a pic, cant figure out macro on this new camera . Couldnt get it to focus.
Basically, I took a piece of wire 3 1/2" long, made a loop in the middle. Put the loop on ground screw, tightened. Ascended the wick & made sure my wires didnt touch (toothpick so I wouldnt nick the oxidization), tied off to pos post. Works on my ProV, so I guess I DID it right :rickroll:

All this stuff is just to make it easier. Personal preference. I just used a lighter to heat my wick. Works fine. Better then any typical atomizer i ever had. I only have the did so maybe the others with other genisis atomizers can see the difference. I have nothing to compare to all I can say consistent great vape!

For full disclosure. I used a replica. The measurements shown will probably be a little off from the 2.2 ohm coil I am currently using. I'll swap them when my tank runs out and measure the differences.

I do love it. I'm such a geek. :p
