Howdy! I smoked Marlboro Light cigarettes for 26 years and as a nurse I knew better, but it was a stressful and sad job. I now have COPD. In order to stop smoking, I began vaping at 18mg. I weaned down to 3mg about 5 to 6 years ago, but I haven't been able to give up the 3mg. I constantly have the vape in my mouth, in the bathroom, on the phone, first thing in the morning. I normally smoke dessert flavors like Strawberry Cheesecake. I find that it helps me from eating as much, especially since I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (low thyroid). I recently underwent an ultrasound of my thyroid and learned that I have a nodule with a rare cell that could potentially be cancer. I have to have surgery to have my thyroid removed July 1st; therefore, I am trying to stop vaping. I'm high risk for anesthesia already so I didn't want to complicate things. I didn't vape at all for 3 days. I did very well. I didn't even miss it too much really.... And then a storm hit... Literally! I felt like my face, chest, and arms at times were on fire and my heart was bounding. My chest felt this crushing pressure. I called the doctor and they ran labs. No temperature, blood pressure normal, pulse normal, labs normal. I thought I am literally crazy! I thought maybe this is anxiety from my upcoming surgery and diagnosis. I've never had anxiety though. A friend of mine has panic attacks and she said she hasn't ever had a 3 day panic attack or the feeling of being on fire. My fiance said maybe it was from stopping the vape. I took an anxiety pill and a few hits from the vape and settled right down to sleep that night. Next day, same symptoms as soon as I hit the floor. I went back to my vape and my symptoms are gone!! It had to be withdrawal from the nicotine?! Has anybody ever tried to stop vaping before or had any similar symptoms? Now I'm wondering if I'd be better off to not try to stop vaping until after my surgery so I don't throw my system out of whack. My heart was literally in arrhythmia. It was simply horrible!! I almost went to the hospital over it. If I would've had another day like I had been having I would've went. I wonder what I would've found out? I guess I'll have to wean off of the vape a little at a time and try to compliment my 3mg with 0mg at times perhaps until my body can handle being "clean."

We all have our individual cases and I wish you well.

For me, and I only know me, I vape at 5%. I started at 24mg way back when and reduced a long time ago. I had thoughts of dropping to zero, but I found that I vape when I get stressed and the nicotine settles that a bit. What also helps is that I take breaks for relaxing. They work together well. My overall health is the primary reason I do what I do. My doctor told me that nicotine was not the problem, it was all of the other chemicals that were in cigarettes.

I have learned that taking breaks during the day is emotionally and physically healthy. Just sitting or taking a short walk to clear my head and reduce the tension in my muscles. Taking breaks is proven to be healthier than enduring continuous stress and tension.

I don't worry about the nicotine, I worried about my overall stress and tension. I suppose I could take longer breaks and not vape, but I don't have that luxury all the time.

Life is not a continuous smooth sail. Emotionally healthy people, all two of them, can channel stress and tension in perfect ways. I am not perfect, and my doctor says my quitting smoking and focusing on lowering stresses has made me healthier. He told me not to worry so much about the nicotine.

Hope helps

Hello and welcome @onesmileynurse, you certainly are experiencing interesting times with all that is happening.

I do hope that you have family and friends that supporting you through them, as it's an awful lot for any one person to process.

But an idea I've heard around on the forum is to use a drop or two of liquid with Nicotine and to rub it on your gums, as you can absorb it that way and cessate your Nicotine cravings.

So that may be an idea for you during the hospital stay and for some of the recovery afterwards.

Thank you so very much for this great information! I think that's a great idea and I would've never thought of it for sure! I do have a great support system, other than my parents divorced after 28 years of marriage and I live close to my Mother and my father lives a few hours away from where my surgery will be. Although my father had invited my Mom to stay in his home during my recovery period, she is doing everything in her power to ensure that I'm not able to see him while I'm there. He's going to be 80 years old in Feb., I haven't seen him in 4 years due to both of us being in ill health. I appreciate your kind words. I'm hoping to stay strong throughout all of this for sure.

Well I hope that you're able to see your Dad soon @onesmileynurse, my partner has MD so we're having to shield as the UK government call it. So we can't go anywhere.

And she's missing her Mum terribly even though we keep in contact daily.
Aww, I'm sorry to hear this. Mitochondrial disease is very similar to MD. I think it's amazing at least we have electronics this day and age during this pandemic that we are all fortunate enough to be able to keep in contact with others. Thank you so much for taking the time to write. I appreciate your encouragement and I hope I'm able to see my Dad as well. No matter what age we are, our parents are never any less important to us!!

I forgot to say that when I am home, taking the dog for a walk and having a vape does wonders. Quiet streets, lots of strolling and "sniffing" stops has become a valued trick. My dog knows that when I get home, I change clothes and its walk time. She knows the deal.
I love this!! I read this several times today and it made me smile! I have 2 dogs myself, so I completely understand! So cute!! Thanks for this!! Take care!
