My concern is a variable resistance coil is basically a rheostat with only the area from 0 to the wiper being heated. I think that will cause directionality in the atomizer, (it will have to be held in a specific degree of rotation to feed the juice to the hot spot.)
As well as the remainder of the coil is going to be a heat sink robbing the active coil of its heat and causing a good deal temperature stress in the coil just beyond the wiper. There will have to be some method to adjust the wiper which will probably require a very small tool to fit into the atomizer to adjust it and it would have to be able to be adjusted through the gunk that atty's build up.

I think you might have better reliability with a multi coil design. This would address reliability and consistency issues. You would use different gauges of nicrome at the same length giving you multiple resistances to play with. You would then set up a selector switch to select different coils or combinations of coils. You would want to make sure that you don't let the coils touch each other to prevent shorts but they will also have to be spaced to allow the juice to come up between them.

This is sounding very cool, as far as price goes once you have your prototype there are manufacturers that will build it for you in volume and price will go down Bauway loves hearing from there clients wants and needs, SLB will also take custom design and builds from what I hear.

Hi vpgtd.
A commercial atomizer that does about 50% of what you will do is available. You can read about it in this link, where the learned Prof. Beard makes a review of it. It might give you some inspiration or how-to info, even if you don't seem to be in particular need of that :)
Please share your developments - really interesting, since the atomizer is the "heart" of the e-cig imo. And - I do like pics of atty's w/o their caps and sealings... lol

That's not quite what he's talking about but, it's still very cool. Thanks for posting the link. I may see if there's a way for me to get one. I'm looking into ways to extract nicotine in case the FDA goes for a ban. The rest of a PV can be made from generic parts but, the atomizer is crucial and this is the first easily repairable one I've seen.

today at work I was doing some testing and we found a way to get a coil to last for a very long time using two different gauge wires as a twisted pair at the same resistance value but different lengths. these two wires made one coil and ran at the same time the produced a volcano of vaper we are gonig to test them more and see what we can come up with. I love having a RnD department that I dont pay for.

On the first page someone mentioned the Genisis thread. I seem to remember that it was me that started a discussion about a v. ohm coil for the Genisis that would use a wiper. As with the OP here the point (for me) was that the space requires in a mod to make it VV also makes for large mod and an atty mod with v ohms would make for a smaller mod.

I know I have been away from this thread for a while. well we are in the making of a test build. it will be dual coil but the user selects the coil in use. and seeing as the coil is the biggest failure point we are attempting a solder free contact system in juice. I have seen on the forum others attempting this so I wanted to give it a shot while I was doing a new system.
