OK, thanks to @englishmick we have a ProTank 2 in the cue for testing.

How many folks here use them, and how do you vape them? VV, or VW, and at what settings?

I don't use protanks but use the coils in a bunch of stuff. 1.8ohm, single coil 6-7w

I get it ! I just thought the reaction to the PBusardo video was a little funny, that's all.
Hah! This is nothing compared to the reaction it got in Jeremy R's original Rayon thread when the video first came out.

First, thanks @mikepetro for all your work.
Second, ok, I give up. (I happily use silica wicks in my Sophia (from byLeo) attys and cotton elsewhere. Always thought silica gave a purer flavor than cotton.)
What kind of rayon and from where? Guess I'll have to give it a shot now.

The 10' bundle shows 100% cotton fibers
The 500' & 3lb boxes are 100% rayon fibers.
That's what you want. Non-reinforced 100% rayon fibers.
I bought a 500' box for about $15 locally last September, gave away a bunch and waste a lot and still have over 1/2 box.

CelluCotton Beauty Coil 3lbs.

Best Wicking Material? Best Place To Purchase Rayon/Cellucotton?

Rayon megathread - Rayon Wick - Better Flow, Flavor, Longevity, and Nic Hit!! - Pt.2

@newyork13 How often do you get to Worcester? I live 15 miles North.
I'll give you a bag of rayon if you're ever in the neighborhood.

I suspect a decent cotton, or rayon, either one, will meet most peoples current needs. It probably just comes down to taste and feel preference.

I've been using both KGD and Sally's Rayon for quite a while now and wouldn't want to be without either of them. If I can't get fast enough wicking with KGD I can improve it by using Rayon. The problem with Rayon is you have to stuff it tighter into the coil and with thinner wire it can be a bit tricky to do that without deforming the coil.

There are also times I don't want faster wicking because it means I need higher power to get the vape I want without making a different coil.

I don't notice enough difference in flavor between the two to bother me, so that's a wash for me.

It's really nice to have these two materials to work with. Options are great :)

I tried twisted 28ga for a while but it was too hard to clean (gunky juice).
I settled on 24ga with both kanthal & SS430 because I can pull a fat rope of rayon through it and it's way easier to scrape the crud off of when refilling tanks :thumb:
I like a lot of thick vapor too = 24ga

I hear ya Mowgli. Used to love 24 gauge wire for its toughness and the way it performed, but lately I've reduced my power and I'm using 27 - 31 gauge. 27 is manageable for Rayon, but here is simply no way I'm going to get Rayon inside a 31 gauge coil unless I wrap it around the wick before I install it

Here's something similar PBusardo did a few years ago. No silica though. Hemp vs. rayon vs. Japanese cotton vs. organic cotton balls. Obviously the video is much longer than yours !

Mazinny, thank you. I remember that vid (saw it) when it first came out, but as a pop in blister packer, it made only SOME sense to me. Altho, I'll say, albeit interesting, it did nothing for my vape du jour at that time.

Now, thanks to you, I've watched it again, with heightened interest. I'm left with being kwite surprised that the rayon did not wick best, being the best transporter of vliquid.

Oh welp!

I watched that PB video when it came out and I had just converted to rayon from silica. Tried cotton and the wet t-shirt taste did me in. Anyhow, I think Phil didn't get the density correct in his test. Too tight or too loose will effect how well rayon wicks.

So true.

In mine, I was just trying to prove how crappy silica was.

However, I have a volunteer who is going to send me a few high end cottons, and I will do a better test, with proper density, and maybe even with identical coils (or possibly a clear 3mm straw) to simulate our conditions. Then I will run the test again to see how modern alternatives perform against each other. I saw Phils vid a long time ago, I dont even remember what protocol he used, and I dont really care, I will come up with a protocol of my own.

:pop: (anxious to see your results, Mike)

I suspect a decent cotton, or rayon, either one, will meet most peoples current needs. It probably just comes down to taste and feel preference. If someone needs higher performance that what these materials offer, they are more than likely running very specialized hardware.

 What IS that? Spark plugs? Pistons? Bed springs??

Mr. Mowgli, you're a wild man. I like ya. ;)

More power to you, I let HER do that......

I'll bet SHE is mega pleased.

    :)

I use a bit of "leader" (smaller than main bunch) and twisting both ends to compact the Rayon then 'screw' the rayon into the coil.

Smaller than 30AWG does present a challenge, hence why I used to use Silica rope all the time.

C'mon, guys. I used to rebuild CE3s with 32 gauge kanthal wrapped on a 18 gauge needle then wicked them with rayon no problem. All it boils down to is technique (and patience).
Speaking from personal experience. Large hands, large fingers, and aging eyes do not help that situation though.

Right now I have a Merlin RTA with a 5mm coil, 5 wraps, 26awg SS430, T-top rayon wick, and it was right up my alley in terms of ease of build. Vapes good too.....

    Suggestion:

How would folks feel if I asked Classy to move this thread to the Lounge?
And rename it to "Vaping Safe - Then & Now"?

I think the original topic had run its course until something new comes out, but I also think good info is still coming out of this thread. In the "Lounge" standards arent as strict about remaining "on topic".

I do believe renaming the thread might be a good idea. As we have seen there are a few members who probably get upset every time they see the thread title. Perhaps even a line or two in the first post explaining that however you vape it's far safer than smoking cigarettes. I believe moderators are able to edit old posts.

On moving it to the lounge ; Just keep in mind that right now as i'm typing, there are 119 members online and 1161 guests. Isn't it probable that some of the "guests" at least would benefit from the info here, and how likely is it that they would find the lounge ? I was perusing these threads for a good few months before i joined.
