I'm not a lawyer, I don't play one on TV and I didn't stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, but...that Tesla accident was a case of driver negligence. I think Tesla has enough of a legal department to "prove" they told the driver that the car was not actually self driving. He just decided it was, maybe with a little "encouragement" from the dealer, even though Tesla, allegedly, made the point that it wasn't. Further, I would speculate that in all 50 states it is not legal to operate a motor vehicle on public roadways/highways without a human operator without special permits under special, and probably controlled, conditions. Every time I hear about some city granting permits for Uber or Google to test their cars in some city I cringe and am glad I don't live in one of those cities.

Knowing what I know about electronics and their reliability, I know for almost a dead certainty that Murphy will enter the picture in short order and all the fail safes in the world won't help at all.
Between the YouTube videos of him bragging about the car driving itself and the tablet found still playing a Harry Potter movie at the accident scene, that's an open and shut case.

Virginia just passed legislation to allow self driving tractor trailers on the I-95 corridor.

And there's this...

Uber’s self-driving truck company just completed its first shipment: 50,000 cans of Budweiser

"Authentic" self-driving BMW - $25.00 fastech.

Another thing not normally discussed with self-driving cars is who is responsible in the event of a collision? There is no human driving, therefore the occupants can't be held responsible, can they? That's a yuge ball of legal wax that will take years to melt down and unravel and will probably take specific legislation by either each State or the Feds.

I used to drive a lot, say 100,000 miles a year between work and pleasure. I used to enjoy it. Now I drive less than 20,000 miles a year and, basically, hate every minute behind the wheel unless I'm on a "back" road with no traffic. Between the people who think there is no speed limit, those that think their very presence on a roadway entitles them to the right of way and those glued to their smart phones, driving just ain't what it used to be. The death of civility has spread to even common courtesy on the road.

And those of you that think buying an electric or hybrid is a wonderful thing, think again. The cobalt used in production of the batteries, and probably even the batteries used in our vape gear, is being mined by children as young as six working 12 to 14 hours a day. The batteries themselves are produced in one of the most polluted places on earth. Then there's the problem of getting rid of those batteries, loaded with heavy, toxic, metals.

Off my Andy Rooney soapbox, for now.

I have a name for those people, I call them Left Lane Losers. Unfortunately, in Tucson, if a driver is going to turn left in 13 miles, they think they should Move Over Now and Sit Tight.

This causes passive-aggression with the drivers who want to go fast, reinforcing the cycle as it *can* be hard to get over into the left lane people aren't really too into helping each other merge.

I don't know if this is all my city's fault, there HAS been a decrease in driver civility over the years. I'm not going to say it's never happened to me, but man, since quitting smoking a lot of my irritability has just VANISHED. I have no idea why, but for some reason vaping chills me right out.... My theory is I'm not CRAVING a cig constantly and in a rush, like, I can wander the aisles of Walmart with... my fellow shoppers (I won't label them, LOL) and not start grinding my teeth, I just Go. Slower. :)

OK, I feel good about these results, they resemble real life usage.

And I have also discovered I am a wimp! I thought I was hardcore running 36mg on dual coils and clapton coils etc, MTL. But I have to admit, 2mg DTL on this high wattage beast just kicks my ..... I wont be testing any more of these, DTL is not my thing.

With cigarettes I always directly inhaled with it's tighter draw. I have tried the airy direct inhale with vapes and it seems unnatural and weak flavored to me. Although I think we pretty much all smoked in a similar way, there sure is a wide variety of vaping styles.

While this is a bit of a stretch, but looking at the progression of these tests and coils, it seems that have higher airflow run cooler than restricted type coils that are used at way lower wattage. I typically run something like a Nautilus coil at around 10w which isn't terrific from your testing temperature wise. My higher airflow builds, including factory coils similar to what you tested like those bbb coils (not the 8 coil stuff but more sane fewer coils higher resistance) are at way lower temperatures than would be needed to reach the "danger zone".

You can use Clapton coils mtl? Doesn't that get real hot on a tight draw?

I use claptons MTL all the time, and the vape "feels" much cooler than this BBB did. I wind my own claptons and they work in TC, I run them at 450 or less, usually around 410. I do open the airflow all the way though so I wouldnt call it a tight draw.

Oh, and I run 36mg juice in them.

Very interesting...

Just caught up with this thread after a bit of a hiatus. Solid work @mikepetro! The video above was an interesting watch. Glad to see UK Universities getting funded to do meaningful research, and focusing on actual physiological effects. I used to work at Bristol Uni, weird seeing the same PowerPoint templates still being used...

I think DTL carries different risk levels as well. At least that what the pulmonary folks are saying. Even Dr F advised against it.

& @Doffy & @Bunnykiller I believe & the one guy who had an affinity toward lozenges that hung around the DIY forum a couple years ago while trying to get enough nic.

I believe he was the first to vape straight 100mg base to get the taste for mixing purposes.

  • This is a refillable "Pod Mod". Comes with 2 different "Atopack" coils,, a 0.25 ohm for DTL and 0.6 ohm for MtL.
  • It is a direct output mod, ie it is like a mech, no regulation.
  • There is no airflow adjustment and MtL is a little too airy, but it is easily modded to restrict airflow to 50%.
  • Common complaint on these atopack coils is dry hits. Avoiding high VG and/or doing the 50% airflow mod reduces this to near zero.
  • Based on testing I would say it is plenty safe at .6ohms, while the 0.25 ohm is marginally hot.

Threaded probe through pod cartridge and inserted next to coil.

These are the test results.

To make the 50% airflow reduction mod, you can just put a piece of tape over part of the airholes.

Or if you want something more elegant, plug the air channel from the bottom.

Remove the silicone plug, being careful not to lose ( and subsequently replace) the little metal plate.

Place a piece of cotton in half the air channel, it has a nice divider down the middle so 50% restriction is easy.

thanks once again @mikepetro for your work.
But, whenever I look at your pics with probes, why do I feel like I'm getting a colonoscopy? LOL.
Oh, you need YOUR temperature charted? I have some larger probes!

Do not fear the probes.... Fear the colonoscopy prep.... :)

My mom has Crohn's disease, I got to do one early, how lucky for me....

Also why I say I am "sensitive" to inhaled PG, not allergic to it. I am clearly able to drink gallons of the stuff.... It's not good.
