Sitting down, facing forward.
Given you're a "newbie" I'd suggest any device that has a DNA60, DNA75 or DNA75 chipset in it. If you want "insurance" for more extreme power levels then a DNA200 or DNA250 chipset would be a alternate. They can all be used in TC or power mode as well. Everyone's style of vaping is different just as everyone/s style of smoking is different. The big factor is the atomizer. There, I'd say stick to single coils, although dual coils are fine too, and maybe look at one that takes premade as well as hand built coils.

Is there a TC "device" for newbies/beginners who want mtl?
Most pre made coil heads don't use hard connections for the wiire. When the wire is kanthal used in a plain power mode that's not a problem. To get more reliable resistance readings for temp control modes the terminals are going to have connectors that are screwed tight. That usually means rebuilding. I believe low watts setups (with saturated coils) and vaped MTL, usually best for beginners, are not creating concerning amounts of undesirable chemicals.

... but I think there will always be a place for a small, non-rebuildable tank in my life as I feel far from confident in taking any RTA out of the house and not having a wick/coil/leakage issue that I can't fix and would be problematic...
:thumb: I used to bring a Crown tank combo out with me until I felt confident that my rebuildables would get me home but over a year later...

I usually take 3 mod/tank(RDTA) combos when I leave the house for more than an hour.
I've been using this tank for over a year and I wicked it in a hurry the other day.
It wouldn't have been a problem but the afc aims down when I carry it comfortably.
That sucked because I noticed it drooling down my hand about a mile into the woods.
Wiped on pants/t-shirt and carried it smarter for the rest of the hike.

Vapeshan, honestly yes the biggest issue you'll have with TC is finding a MTL tank that will take TC coils. There are plenty of good mods for TC, and the best coils (so I have read) will be either titanium or stainless steel. There's a tank called the EVO 1 Mega, I think it's called, that has the option of titanium coils (I think that's what they are) that come prewicked and you can use in temp mode, then you can just rewick the coils. I was not the BIGGEST fan of the tank compared to the Nautilus 2 (it whistled, it just seemed to not provide the greatest vape) so I haven't used it a great deal yet, but that might be an option if you don't want to get into building. Not TOO many negatives on that tank, it holds a fair amount of e-liquid, and is easy to operate, I just didn't enjoy the vape as much as on my N2, and got into building a coil on an RTA before I really used that EGO mega tank, but it's not a *bad* tank by any means, and if you want to try out the TC coils on that due to utter terror, that's something that I *know* you can try tank wise that isn't too difficult as far as coils/wicking etc. It's user friendly and you can MTL on it.

As far as mods, there are so many and I've only tried a select few, I would leave that discussion to others....

That being said, once I got over my original terror and slowed down, I don't think I would have bought that Mega tank or coils, as I vastly prefer the N2 vape, and I was also really early in the process. I would've been better off sticking to what I *knew* I liked and habituating to the N2 and all its coils and capacities and doing a bit more research before jumping on board that train. Since I actually TC'd my first self-built (well husband and ECF built) TC stainless steel coil on an RTA and really enjoyed the vape, much more than the Ego Mega tank, and that's what I'll be doing in the future, probably, rather than using an inbetween situation. You are like 2 weeks from quitting smoking, it's really fine to not worry too much about temps for now, and if TC is your goal do a lot of research first, before spending on something until you really know what you want out of it, and what kind of tank. Think of it this way, you are still improving your health, getting stable vaping in multiple situations, etc. I chain-vaped like crazy early on and my docs are still noting health *improvements* not diminishments, so just don't.... Rush off the deep end or anything. Do your research. Enjoy your N2 and vape it how you need to right now to manage quitting cigarettes, etc.

I think there is always going to be a place for the N2/N2 coils in my life.

Cheers,

Anna

Read up on this device. A lot of new folks seem to like it, and it offers several TC and non-TC prebuilt heads. And it wont break the bank.

You might also want to ask in the Tootle Puffer thread:

Any chance you could do a test of this device with the same atty and coil you used on the DNA?

I don't own one myself, but I have an istick TC 100W. In stock form it was not accurate, although it did at least stop dry hits...

yes it is tricky to wade thru all there is to offer, and even more of a trick for me to try and decide FOR YOU , what is good... :D :D
but, it IS why we are all here - to hash it around and chat about what works and what is out there (ASK & ANSWER Questions)

good gear and good eJuice will keep you off the stinkies (doesn't have to cost a lot)

here is my take on what is good and simple for a good price - IMO :2c:
I'm going with you don't want to deal with 18650 batteries YET ! so these are internal battery

the VapeShop has good deal on tanks and the Cuboid Mini, but they don't carry the cool NEW ProCL coils
the ProCL coils are tight air flow (MtL) and SS so you can use them for EITHER Watts or TempControl
upload_2017-8-16_16-30-55.png

then MVS has the ProCL coils and the Cuboid Mini , but NO tanks
upload_2017-8-16_16-34-19.png

so an eGo ONE tank with a ProCL coil inside, sitting on top of a Cuboid Mini -- for less than $60 bucks it would be a ROCK SOLID set up
buy it, get familiar, fall in love-then buy another one so you have one to use/one to charge and a back up (you will like it) :p :sneaky: ;) :):)

 what area of the world do you hail from... ?

- Joyetech Products - VapeShop - The Best Shop For The Best Vape

- Joyetech Cuboid Mini

- Joyetech eGo ONE ProCL Coil Atomizer Head for eGo ONE TFTA

- Joye Cuboid Mini 80W TC - Express Kit - White

Not really, that exact coil is gone. Not sure which atty you are referring to but by the time I get done testing them, the coils are shot. I am assuming you mean the Baby beast as it is the only one I recall using a DNA on, as I have no other mods (other than several DNAs) where the wattage will go that high.

Whats the goal?

Hi Mike, should have been more clear....

I was wondering if you could repeat the testing you did:
Real Life temp measurements inside a 2016 era atty | E-Cigarette Forum

The goal, to see if some of the more budget friendly kit the market can do a reasonable job of TC.

Not much point recommending kit no matter how cheap it is if it is way out in terms of temperature.

With the istick TC 100W that I have the actual temps verses the set temp were way off with the stock settings.. I was seeing a 60F difference.....

Thanks for this!! The thread terrifies me since I tend to chain vape.....only a quitter for 2 weeks!!!
Vapers have widely different goals and those aren't always obvious to newbies. Some people will settle for a substitute for smoking. Others require things that smoking could never do. The requirements are so different there could be a separate forum for each. In the good old days there was wide agreement about how beginners should start and progress. It was good advice back then and is still good advice. Today's advice is more colored by product loyalities, personal preferences and commercial advantage. Tha's not such a good thing because it gives governments more excuses to regulate.

My view is the good advice of several years ago is still good advice. Start with a higher resistance coil, low watts, 12-24 mg nic, at a no frills lower price point. That advice doesn't validate the cloud and flavor chasers. It doesn't create a very lucrative first sale for the local vape shop but it might still be good advice for smokers trying to switch. If 8 watts on a 1.8 ohm coil was producing hazardous amounts of chemicals I think that would have been noticed by now.

Two of the internet mod reviewers DO measure temperature on TC enabled devices. You may wish to scroll though their reviews to find something that actually works and is in your price range.

OR - IMHO/YMMV: The Eleaf "Pico" is a well regarded/reviewed/liked low cost TC device. Alternate firmware (IE:ArticFox) is also available for them.

The "Mellow 3 Mini" that often comes with them in kit form uses "Atlantis" type coils. (last I looked there are at least 3 different replacement Atlantis compatible RBA's available) Simply wind up some decent TC wire on a RBA, install and enjoy.

It does not get much less expensive than that.

Ahhhh, you are wanting me to get into TC Mod accuracy testing. That is beyond the scope of what I volunteered to do here. This was all about testing how common kanthal attys performed in VV and VW.

For one thing, the only TC Mods I own are DNA Mods. With the myriad of new TC Mods hitting the market I am not about to go out buying them all.

Actually, testing TC Mod accuracy would be a lot easier than what I am doing now. Assuming I had a handful of mods to test in one sitting. Doing them onsey twosey would be a pain.
    • I would build up 3 Merlins (which I already have), all with the same coil geometry, one with SS316, one with TI, and one with NI.
    • I would thermocouple test all three of these against a DNA using Steam Engine TFRs.
    • Assuming they test accurate, I would use those three attys as "standards" to thermocouple test the other TC mods.
It would be easy to test a few mods back to back that way.

If folks are interested in sending me mods to test (include $7 for return postage) I would consider it, but only if using my own "standardized" attys.

Also, I think that would be best suited for a new thread.
    From a previous post:

Yes, I have long had confidence in the DNA line. but just because mine is accurate doesnt mean they all are. And while not the intent of this thread, TC accuracy is dependent on a lot of variables.
    • The manufacturer of the board
    • How well the mod was constructed, specifically with respect to the solder joints to the 510 connector
    • Is it a quality 510 connector, many spring loaded connectors dont have enough tension
    • Was the mod calibrated to account for internal resistance
    • The quality of the atty, specifically its internal resistance and stability under heat flux
    • The accuracy of the TCR curve being used with respect to the wire
    • The quality and consistency of the wire.
    • The technique of the user in assembling all of the above
There are a lot factors that must come together to have an accurate TC reading on a mod. A mere couple hundredths of an ohm can make a big difference with some of the wire being used.

Alas, that is the topic of many other threads already scattered about ECF.

Yeah, thats why I pointed that one out. I dont have any personal experience with it, but I have seen a lot folks in the Tootle Puffer & Vapocolypse Stock Up threads who really liked them.

The ArticFox firmware is very similar to Escribe and adds a lot of functionality. Probably not suited for a noob, but it gives them something to grow into.

Dan at DJLSB checks multiple metals with TC at multiple temperatures and I could of swore PB does some checking on TC accuracy. (last review of his I watched was a compare of "mini TC mods" hence why I purchased some "Target Minis" as they worked far better than the rest)

Hopefully people are not getting the silly idea that your going to test every atomizer and start testing TC accuracy of various mods (unless of course you WANT to do that stuff).

I think: Dan, PB and a number of hardware forums here (and elsewhere) do a fairly good job of "calling out" devices that claim to TC but don't actually work. Sadly both the reviews and the forums need to be closely filtered as the "works fine in power mode" noise often overwhelms any issues with actual TC.

The behavior of aldehyde production showed it began to rise significantly at 475F/275C. Up to 250C would place therefore place you at low, if any, such products. Until someone does a test combining both temperature in the coil and aldehyde production in the vapor that's about the best you can get from the info available.

So to do avoid carcinogens the temperature of the coil should not be more than 200*C

    is that right?

And if I put my mod into TC mode and choose 150*C - temperature will not go over 150*C, so im safe...

    is that right too?

According to Wang, its different for PG vs VG, so it really depends on your juice mix. I run a 50/50 mix of pg/vg so I try to keep my temp below 232*C

At 150*C you are well within the safe zone.
