Anyone have nice official looking documents explaining some of the commonly asked questions about e-cigarettes?
You need to leave them a copy of this, which answers all questions...

I imagine Vocalek can point you to some additional items that CASAA has put together as well, so you might want to PM her.

You'll want to be prepared to shoot down the antifreeze argument by offering the facts.
That Dr. Siegel document has all of that information.

You'll want to be prepared to shoot down the "save the children" argument.
I would do that by explaining how much it costs to get started, and the ongoing efforts and expense.
And might want to also point out that there is no possible way to hide all of this from parents.

The fact is nobody who doesn't need nicotine already is going to spend the money or put forth the effort.
The whole idea of children or teenagers getting involved with electronic cigarettes is absolutely absurd when put in that light.

Nobody NEEDS nicotine, jsut like nobody NEEDS caffeine. Just sayin... it's a recreational thing, let's not feed their addiction overdramatizations...

While we understand how all this works, there are a large number of people out there that only see us as a bunch of "monkey on our backs" addicts that would say anything to get/keep our next fix. to them we're no better than a ...... junkie. And they don't care what is banned, as long as they leave them alone. But you just wait till they get around to taxing the crap out of Twinkies and soda pop. Then all hell will break loose.

Not that we should blindly trust wikipedia....but:

"Technically, nicotine is not significantly addictive, as nicotine administered alone does not produce significant reinforcing properties.[40] However, only after coadministration with an MAOI, such as those found in tobacco, nicotine produces significant behavioral sensitization, a measure of addiction potential. This is similar in effect to amphetamine.[41]
Nicotine gum, usually in 2-mg or 4-mg doses, and nicotine patches are available, as well as smokeless tobacco, and electronic cigarettes, which do not have all the other ingredients in tobacco.[42]"

MAOI is 50% of the smoking addiction, that's why some feel a little uneasy even with the e-cig the first few weeks. Nicotine without carbon monoxide is less addicting and more like the gumm and patches. Even blood vessel restriction caused by nicotine isn't too bad if it's not delivered via a cigarette.

I posted my letter from Ohio Rep Brown elsewhere on the forum, but I'll post here for you to read. Not great news.

Here's my letter back from My Ohio rep sherrod Brown. It seems what I said to him went over his head.

Dear (Mr Edison),
Thank you for sharing your views on electronic cigarettes and for taking the time to write about your experiences.

Electronic cigarettes are an alternative to tobacco cigarettes designed to deliver nicotine or other substances in the form of a vapor. They have a rechargeable heating component that warms an internal cartridge containing the nicotine and converts the contents of the cartridge into an inhalable substance.

In September 2010, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that the production quality of electronic cigarettes is substandard or non-existent in terms of Federal health standards which are in place to protect the public’s well-being. The FDA tested cartridges labeled as containing no nicotine but in fact, did contain nicotine. Additionally, after testing cartridges with the same label, the FDA found drastically different amounts of nicotine in each of the cartridges. Consumers should be able to trust a label and not unknowingly inhale nicotine or higher levels of nicotine as many are when using electronic cigarettes.

Consequently, the FDA sent letters to five electronic cigarette distributors citing violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA). The FDA has stated that if the Electronic Cigarette Association is willing to cooperate with the Federal Agency, it is possible for the product to receive FDA approval.

I will continue to monitor this situation with your letter in mind. Thank you again for being in touch with me.

Sincerely,

Sherrod Brown
United States Senator

Ahhh yes, the standard "we must listen to and believe the FDA Gods" response.

What these politicians like Brown fail to want to comprehend is:
How consistent is the nicotine in cigarettes?
Would it be safer for smokers to vape than smoke?
If the FDA was so concerned and upfront about health, would cigarettes ever have been marketed?
Because of corruption and lobbying, cigarettes got a free pass for many years, addicting million of us. An alternative to smoking is owed to us by society for the deaths, illnesses etc that cigarette addiction brought with it.
Banning e-cigs would be forcing some people to go back to cigarettes, and if it's for health reasons that they are banned, consider comparing the e-cig to regular cigarettes and let us have the freedom to choose.
