I would point out that the journey probably has as much to do with staying smoke free as the end-all perfect vape.
Those growing pains as we learn how to vape keeps our minds occupied, and off cigarettes.
5v will probably knock most first time vapors on their ...., and direct dripping takes a little practice.
So I would not suggest a 5v box mod or an atomizer for a persons first experience with e-cigs. Wait until they feel the need.

But, how many ashtrays will 8,800 cigarette butts fill?:p

the way i look at it, the less you can quit smoking with, the better. If you dont need to jump straight into a 5v PV, then dont! The thing i gotta dissagree with, OP, is the fact that there's so many different styles and shapes and powers and colors of vaporizers because they're all targeted at various personal preferences. Everyone just has to trial/error for themselves while avoiding schemes!

Cadaoryn, I agree with you and the OP, and many other points made within this thread. OP is right in getting a "good" starter PV. Something that "more than enough" does the trick at first. After that, then fine tune and find what works best for each Vaper. And, $33 isn't a bad first cost for a PV that will "deliver" enough TH and vapor to work, at first.

I like the recommended PV in this thread because it gives the "first time" user something to choose without a tons of research and waiting.

    Cheers!

................Sure some batteries charge a little more because of being a little better quality and mAh but li-ion batteries have a pretty much standard charge cycle.........

The difference between the recharge life of an eGo and a non-proprietary battery is not "some batteries charge a little more". The manufacturers of these batteries state this. And 150 recharges in comparison to 1000 recharges is a significant difference not a "little more". Plain and simple, the average vaper will get much more use and save a good bit of money with non-proprietary batteries when you also consider the averag $15 cost of ego batteries compared to around $4 for non-proprietary batteries.

I was reading this thread and got very interested in those FoxyBoxMods someone linked here. After browsing the site I was left wondering if he ships those to Europe, or just inside US?

What are the advantages of having a box mod?

    1) Throat hit! You can go with a VV and use it at 3.7 or crank it up to 5V, or just purchase a 3.7V or 5V unit.

    2) Price

    3) Excellent customer service

    4) For me, carrying around 2 little batteries beats carrying around a pouch full of Rivas.

I'm not sure if Godzilla ships internationally. Why don't you pm him and ask?

I too have a nice big box of crap that didn't work. Don't we all wish we had our money back on some of it. But, like someone said there is a journey we all go on to get to that sweet spot. The whole smoking thing itself is just ugly and sad from start to finish. How much cash have we wasted on something that burned to ashes and made us stink like a moose's ...? Even after all the fails it's much better than the alternative. I can tell you though, anyone who I know will get the benfit of my experienced pitfalls, and running close to 1,000 bucks spent in 3 months.

Just this afternoon, I got 3 packages of things in the mail that I want to test/try out. I can tell you i'm pretty ...... at the moment after opening just ONE of them.

Woody, thanks for putting out there what's been on my mind for a while.

I, for one simply cannot agree with what you said, specifically "90% of all e-cig products are garbage" .... that is a huge overstatement. Secondly, I can't get behind your mandate for what a newbie should buy in order to avoid the frustration that you experienced with your Ego T, although I do agree that an Ego T is not the best set up for newbie trying to get off smokes, but that is my opinion, not my mandate!

Your frustrated experience makes perfect sense considering the PV that you chose, a Ego T which I actually would not recommend for a newbie .... especially one that wants an easy "midnight drag".

Newbie's should choose the PV that is the best "replacement" for their analog habit. Had you selected a quality carto/analog style set up such as a KR808D-1 (Volt, and Bloog are the same) or something similar , during those late night urges you could have simply reached over to your night stand, picked that baby up and took a drag ..... like I do, almost every night ... no playing or fiddling involved... and my KR8 kicks my Tanks ... all day, and in almost every way except battery life.

Newbie's don't need forceful opinions saying "you must buy this" (which is prolly how YOU ended up with an Ego T)... they need proper information in order to make an intelligent and well informed decision that will best meet their objective, which in most cases is to quit smoking in the easiest, most hassle free, yet enjoyable way possible.

Look up li-ion batteries the minimum charge cycle is 400 charge cycles..max is 1200 charges..when you talk about eGo batteries your talking about more than a battery..it's a switch, connector and board..BTW if you can solder you probably could replace the battery in a eGo but why bother when you're replacing the whole device for under $20. Sure you can get a mod for under $20 when you build it yourself out of cheaply made parts not to mention getting a charger and batteries.

How long do you really think the switches and parts in a mod are going to last?..quality switches and parts cost money..where do you get the 1000 cycles for mod batteries? When I look up the $4-5 batteries they are 400 cycles..bottom line eGo's are cost effective I've got my moneys worth out of my eGo's the last 6 months use. The manufactures of the device are giving a low estimate with 150 charge cycles. The 100-200 charge cycles is probably where the battery starts to drop off a little but so do all li-ion batteries.

You can argue it all you want but I'm experienced in electronics I have repaired over 1,000 game systems and quite a few computers. I have been tinkering with electronics for over 30 years and on a test in 7th grade I understood college level math. I'm not saying mods are bad but they're not really more cost effective than buying a eGo..BTW most likely your "non-proprietary" battery is made in the same factory in China out of the same materiel as the one in an eGo...

Well....Batteries are batteries, and there's only so many companies in China that actually produce them. I've seen some go way past what they say they will and some not make it. I've run rechargeable batteries for well over 25 years now (starting with the original NiCad ones) and I will say they've come a long way in both capacity and recharging capabilities. If you could take that ego apart, and get at the actual cells, you could easily find they're not really proprietary at all but simply NOT user changeable. We've taken laptop batteries apart and replaced the inner cells in them. They're out there you just have to be knowledgable to change them.

On the other hand, I'd have to say the average beginning vapor is not gonna change much of anything really and wants to screw something on and go from there. I'm going to look at a mod box this afternoon that uses 14500's. Yes there is a reason I am picking that battery...I use over 10 other devices (mostly flashlights) that use that battery. I have loads of those in use. My kids use flashlights that have those in them (compliments of daddy) and I like to keep things universal if possible.

It is truthfully silly to even discuss battery life as it's so subjective. Some people recharge condition and such their batteries. Some (I'd say most) do not. I've tried both ways and I can assure you that from personal experience it can and usually does make a difference on battery life. "THEY" (whoever in the hell they are) claim that these newer batteries have no memory affect and you never need to discharge them. My personal experience (with 14500s, 18650s, & R123s) have shown otherwise and I can assure you it helps to run them to the discharge point every so often (protected or non protected makes no difference). That point is hard to reach on non protected batteries without running them too low on occasion.

I guess that's my .02 (probably more like 5 bucks worth) on the battery thing. From Flashlights to cameras to RC cars to ham radio talkies these batteries are out there. Basically they do one thing....work, charge, and work.

I've been vaping a good bit longer than you and have used 15 different models with batteries that are proprietary such as the ego and many non-proprietary. The non-proprietary always lasted longer than the proprietary ones by at least twice as long. To be conservative, ego type battery efficiency is definitely reduced by the 200 recharge cycle mark whereas non-proprietary batteries will reach that mark no sooner than 400 - 500 cycles. You stating that they are same is just misleading.

Maybe you have more money than you know what to do with and so throwing out the used up battery along with the switch (ego) that is still working and paying $20 for a new one is fine with you. I would much rather spend $4 for a new battery that is non-proprietary since the working switch is separate. Even if the recharge cycles were the same, spending $4 - $5 for a non-proprietary battery instead of $20 for an ego battery is a no-brainer. With the suppliers I use for my mod type PV's, I've never had to replace a switch yet.

Well All I'm gonna say is this. I don't think the average first time vapor should get any box that he gets to pick the batteries that go in it. If you shop around (and most here do) you're liable to end up with cut rate batteries that blow up in your face. How often does this happen?? Well personally I don't give a hoot but it would only take ONCE for it to happen to me or someone I love. (I honestly don't wanna see it happen to anyone)...are these mod boxes cool? I have no clue but hope to let you know this after noon later.....Do I have the necessary electronics and rechargeable battery experience to use this device, recharge it's batteries safely? Yep....Will I follow all the things I've learned in about 40 years of electronics experience (first job fixing TV's at Age 16, same time I started smoking).......YES....and do I think anyone without proper experience and or the willingness to research what it takes should do it?? NO NO NO......Batteries blowing up in people's faces does NOT help our cause. It only takes once for it to happen.....makes the news...goes nation wide....ya there's some good publicity...

Also to ANYONE (and no I don't care how long one has vaped it's about electronics experience and battery experience).....PLEASE don't go out and buy the cheapest battery on the market. Do the research that's available including RIGHT HERE IN THESE FORUMS ON ECF......There's ton's of info out there and it's not always about the cheapest price please....beleive me it's NOT.

I doubt that a li-ion battery of about the same mAh is going to go through more charge cycles than another..I paid $9.99 each for my 900mAh SmokTech eGo's on sale. You're probably comparing 650mAh batteries to ones that are over 1000mAh..more mAh will get you more use.

How many of these people are going to replace a switch? If you knew anything about li-ion batteries you would know the recharge cycle of them is 400 minimum to 1,200 max..tell me exactly how the charge cycle in a eGo is reduced more than any other li-ion battery? You call them proprietary and sure on the outside they are made for the eGo or other e cigs but the li-ion cells inside are are pretty much the same inside as the ones you're using in your mod.

If you're not getting 6months to a year out of an eGo (except for the occasional failure because of mass production) you probably are doing something wrong with them..I wouldn't be surprised if 1 of the 3 eGo's I bought might last me 2 years or more. You act like I'm spending a lot of money I'm averaging just over $70 a month vaping at least 7 different flavors fairly heavily.

It sounds like you are the one who spent all the money as you have gone through 15 different models including your "many non-proprietary" batteries..in a couple years you shouldn't have went through that many devices...

That's why eGo's are the best way to go IMO from a reputable vendor of course..most of the eGo's from the vendors on this forum are most likely made in the same factory from pretty much the same parts..I know the KGO's and Joye eGo's have Joye branded batteries in them and my SmokTech's have the same case..I suspect they have a Joye battery in them too but I'm not pulling them apart until they die. I know quite a bit about eletronics and spent a good amount time researching and I feel eGo style are the way to go for everyday vaping. I might get into mods a bit but I know when I go out of the house I will grab a eGo and maybe an auto 510 or 2...

You are such a noob, you need to get a clue. When I started vaping there was no eGo, Riva, E-Power, etc. You had to try many models that came out over time to find ones that worked well. And the plain and simple fact that you never answer is that $4 for a battery is less than even $10 for a battery. But the average price for an ego battery is $15. And although I am no electrical engineer, I've used enough different models and read enough threads to know that non-proprietary batteries last longer and are more than twice less expensive than your ego batteries. If you state otherwise, you are not being forthright.

I also notice that you are such an ego fanboy that no matter what someone is looking for, it appears to be the only model you every recommend. I guess all other models should go out of business. How many different models have you used for comparison analysis to determine that the ego is the only model anyone should use?

Remember that we are talking about your average first time user here, not someone that spends 2/3 of their day on ECF.
They probably don't even know that mods exist. More than likely all they know is what they have seen on TV. Seen anyone using a 5v box mod on TV lately? So their knowledge level is simply that "one cart is equal to a pack of cigarettes, and lasts all day".

IMHO we are better off letting people learn about protected and safe chemistry batteries BEFORE they burn their house down or blow their damn head off.
BTW there is a new post on here about a guy having stacked bats explode on him yesterday if you care to look for it. (he has been vaping for about 3 months)

Yes, most everything I vape uses replaceable batteries, but I learned how to vape on an eGo.
