NYT article on quitting smoking - e-cig "gizmo" bad

He's probably referring to detectable amounts of nitrosamines and propylene glycol.

But the FDA has't declared that these "toxic" chemical are in concentrations that are unsafe.

These chemicals are in everything from beer to cheese to fish products.

The real question is whether or not they are present in unsafe concentrations rather than merely detectable concentrations.

They are referring to the propylene glycol which is a "less" toxic anti freeze.

Sleuth and Steve: PG is not regarded as "toxic". It is GRAS per the FDA (generally regarded as safe), and is an FDA approved inactive ingredient in a multitude of medications. See, eg, the FDA inactive ingredient database here: Inactive Ingredients in FDA Approved Drugs (just type in propylene glycol in the search box on this page, and you will see the long list of FDA approved meds with PG).

As I posted on page one of this thread, the FDA lab results on the ecig cartridges from SE and Njoy that were tested found one cartridge from SE had around 1% of diethylene glycol, or DEG. That, plus the TSNAs found in minute quantities, is what the FDA and other groups keep shouting about as the "toxic" chemical found ecigs. The URL cites to the studies showing this are all in my post too.

You should do a little more reading of the forum:

I have no idea what your inference is regarding my post. The url I posted was to a law that was just passed by congress on behalf of the FDA afor smoking. WHy would I need to know the History of Ecigs to know what has just went through Congress? Maybe you should send those links to your congressman! LOL

Kristin Please clarify what your meaning was by your post.
8-oThanks

I believe Kristin's point is that this issue is currently the matter of a court case, and she provided the link to the thread that discusses this issue ad nauseum. Pour a glass of wine, and enjoy the several hours it will take you to wade through the thread and get an understanding of what the arguments are. ;)

I found it interesting that the article mentions Chantix, and even mentions the dangers of the drug in passing: "the Food and Drug Administration last year warned that patients taking Chantix or Zyban ... should be watched for signs of potential mental problems."

The article downplays the known side effects of Chantix as "mental problems", and follows up with "The percentage of patients who experience extreme symptoms is minuscule".

In the section on e-cigs, the article states "Worse, some have been found to emit harmful toxins." Mr. Glynn chooses to describe the side effects of Chantix as "miniscule", but attaches no such qualifier to the "harmful toxins" found in microscopic amounts in some tested cartridges.

Has anyone attempted suicide after using their 510? Why do people like Mr. Glynn seem to accept suicide as a "chance that you take", but microscopic amounts of GRAS elements are license to dismiss the e-cig as a serious alternative?
